Mets 2024 Season

Got back from vacation just in time to see Mets game last night. I am a long time Yankee fan but root for Mets except against Yanks. Mets overachieved by getting to NL championship series. Yanks met expectations by finally getting to Series after fifteen year drought (and signing Soto); will need to win it to overachieve IMHO.

I am really curious what the Mets will do this off-season. I just find it hard to believe Steinbrenner would let Soto leave after a WS appearance/win, and would match Cohen at any point. They might as well cancel the parade if they let Soto walk to Queens.

I speculated about trading for a 2025 free agent like Tucker or Vladdy Jr/Bichette. But, I can also see us do something the Dodgers did to get Betts -- eat bad contracts from other teams to decrease the prospect acquisition.

Some teams I am curious about:
White Sox. There's rumors Reinsdorf may sell the team.

Could we get a young ace like Crochet, and an injury-prone all-star like Robert, for less than you'd expect if we take on Benintendi's contract? He makes 17 mill per year and has had two down seasons.

Cubs. We've been rumored with Jameson Taillon for a few years now. He makes 18m the next two years, and would be a great stable addition to the rotation. What if we added Cody Bellinger, who will be making 27 mill the next two years, to the trade? Maybe Bellinger isn't the MVP guy we thought he would be, but he bounced back to become a good player.

Mariners. They have a lot of good starting pitching. Mitch Haniger is making 17 mill and old/struggling. Could we part with a declining asset like Baty, take on that contract, and get a pre-arb guy?

Just thinking out loud, but it's amazing that we have a really great FO who can be creative, find diamonds in the rough that people like us wouldn't know, and also have the resources to do things like above.
I just feel that Soto is the only player that closes the gap for us on his own. We can do a million things to get there after him, but the Dodgers have Ohtani (pitching next year too 😕), the Phillies have Harper (and Turner), the Braves have Acuna, and the Yankees have Judge.

How can the Yankees afford Soto and Judge (and Cole) but not Cohen? Can’t happen.

Also, how good do most of these contracts look after 5 years? Harper? What a steal.

Lindor
Vientos
Soto
Alsonso

Wow

I'd literally give Soto 700/15 and not think twice. You really don't need to convince me. It would just be amazing to me if NYY somehow don't match anything the Mets do. It would be malpractice that would be unforgivable for a generation of fans.

Well this turned out to be an interesting and fun year. The team way exceeded expectations and ran into a lineup that is from a video game. I still thought we would beat them, but it wasn’t meant to be.

The off-season will be interesting. I think we will go after a top flight pitcher and then some 1-2 year contract SP and bats. I think the team will not go all in and want to see if any of the young kids can contribute. If we can get Baty, Acuna, Jett Williams, Mauricio, etc to fill some holes that would be huge coupled with Vientos, Lindor and Nimmo as a core. I’m we really need Alvarez to make a jump. I expected his bat to be much better. I could see us take a step back in 2025. Probably at best similar to this year of battling for a wild card and then hopefully the future final comes to fruition in 2026.

From a die-hard Yankees fan--Well done NY Mets. It was just not your year. The Dodgers had the better team. Your team has matured and should be formidable next season in the NL pennant race. Heal up and tweak your roster, as needed. Hopefully, we'll see you next October.

Up until now, Steinbrenner and Cohen had a do not covet thy neighbor’s free agent. I think that commandment is broken now with Soto.
He may remain with the Yankees, but there will be no discount. Cohen will make a major offer.

If Soto does not pan out, maybe Willie Adames from Milwaukee. Play him at third and move Vientos to first (he and Winker can meet in the parking lot after every game). I do not think Alonso returns.

The other place is the Mets will be aggressive signing bullpen pieces.

We should expect a busy offseason. Cohen knows he must strike now. While this was the offseason of movement anyway, the unexpected run hastens the timeline.

Unless we trade for a clear cut all-star CF, I expect us to leave that as an open competition for Tyrone Taylor (under contract), Acuna, Jett, Gilbert, etc., in Spring Training. Maybe an old defensive-first guy like Keiermeier or whatever gets an invite to ST as well.

SP, we also have Paul Blackburn and probably Jose Butto vying for spots. I'd be shocked if we don't retain one of Manaea/Severino/Quintana, aren't aggressive in the high-end of the market, and take on a reclamation project/untapped guy.

RP, I'm expecting Stearns to nibble around the edges and frustrate everyone, but then we see guys out of nowhere breakout. Feels random to you and I but the smart guys know how to build one without big money. I do think Diaz, Garrett, Nunez, Reid-Foley, Brazoban, Young will be guys penciled in.

I read that Yankees thread through the season for amusement purposes. They are all a bunch of whiney bitches complaining all year long and now acting like everything is coming up aces. You can’t undo all your bitching you ungrateful losers! Let the record show in a WS year you were moaning 99% of the time.
Just like all the Mets fans became the last few weeks. It's what fans do.

A clear case of penis-envy. DCNLDMF

shoutout to all the yankees fans who decided to just show up in here right after the Mets got knocked out, I never would have gone into yall thread when you lose to the dodgers but boy am i going to be annoying now 😂

Yankee fan here to congrats the Mets and their fans on a phenomenal season. Post May, the Mets were as hot as any team in the league, and were definitely a tough out in the playoffs. They played with grit, and showed a ton of heart in getting the series back to Los Angeles, as well as all of the come from behind wins this year. Will be interesting to see the moves that they make in an effort to improve, but it's good to see that they actually have an owner with something other than lint in his pocket so they can compete. NY baseball will be very entertaining for the foreseeable future. Great season!!!
