Like most Mets fans, I went to sleep last night feeling sick to my stomach. Overachievers? Didn't matter. Great ride? Didn't matter. Just two wins from the World Series? Didn't matter.
I woke up feeling different.
After YouTubeTV booted SNY (SNY was the biggest reason I moved to YTTV) late in the 2023 season, I struggled to find a way to get access to Mets games. I wasn't successful till mid June when I got access to the SNY app and figured out that the app isn't supported ny LG TVs but does work on the Amazon Fire Stick.
For the first time in years, watched nearly every game from that point on, obviously interest built.
Suddenly a franchise that couldn't or more appropriately WOULDN'T do anything right under prior ownership, had an owner who knew nothing about baseball except being an ardent fan with a fat wallet. After trying to buy a championship (101 wins wasn't half bad) brought in the man he wanted (Stearns) and gave him control of baseball operations.
Refreshingly Cohen keeps quiet when things don't go well. He never trashes players or fans, and all indications are that the team loves him. The game watches are brilliantly geared towards fans whether you went or not. Citifield is incredibly family friendly, and is once again a stadium where you can end up chatting with a complete stranger next to you, or on the train to or from games.
Throughout this unexpected run, as you traveled to Citi, you could feel and hear fan excitement building, the camaraderie palpable the closer you got. You get the feeling that if Cohen becomes aware of something that sucks for fans, he will correct it if he can
The players. Wow. We use the word "team" to refer to roster, but these guys really became a great team in their spirit, support of each other, and rowing in unison. Yes, there are deficiencies to correct, but with $90 million coming off the books, the Mets will be buyers this winter.
What they won't do is mortgage their future. They will continue to stock the farm system, and there are a couple of guys with market value who likely won't be here next year.
It's rare to end a season that ends short of the WS by saying THANK YOU to the Mets, but since mid June the team became the boys of Summer with a season as enjoyable as an August sunset - worth watching every second till it dipped below the horizon.
Already can't wait for next season. In the meantime, the Johnnies will perfectly fill that gap.
Less than 4 months till pitchers and catchers report to spring training. LGM! YGB!
