Unbelievable season. We had no business being in a Game 6 with the Dodgers, so we need to separate that disappointment from how crazy everything else was. This team was scraping its head on its ceiling all season. You don't get too many of these as a Mets fan. I am very happy.
Hopefully Cohen and Stearns realized we showed up to a gun fight with a slingshot and a handful of rocks, and they add serious talent to the top of the roster.
I think we absolutely have to sign Soto. I think you re-sign Alonso to provide a ton of protection for Lindor, Vientos, and Soto as well. You can add Soto, Burnes, retain Alonso and Manaea, and add some leverage arms and still stay in the ballpark of this season's payroll thanks the massive expiring contacts of Scherzer and Verlander as well as combined 15 million we paid McCann and Narvaez and over 25 million combined paid to Houser, Ottavino, Raley, Diekman, and Maton. Maton is due 7.75 mill and has a 250k buyout...the easiest decision all offseason.
The total payroll after Manaea opts out and Mets buy out Maton will only be 120 million...down from 320 million this season (over 350 mill in cap hits).
We have a ton of pre-arb and arb young players as well as deep AAA ranks ready to fill in the roster. I don't recall a time when we've had so many major league ready prospects graduate in 2 seasons like this. Marte's 20 mill falls off after 2025 as well.
I am really curious what the Mets will do this off-season. I just find it hard to believe Steinbrenner would let Soto leave after a WS appearance/win, and would match Cohen at any point. They might as well cancel the parade if they let Soto walk to Queens.
I speculated about trading for a 2025 free agent like Tucker or Vladdy Jr/Bichette. But, I can also see us do something the Dodgers did to get Betts -- eat bad contracts from other teams to decrease the prospect acquisition.
Some teams I am curious about:
White Sox. There's rumors Reinsdorf may sell the team.
Could we get a young ace like Crochet, and an injury-prone all-star like Robert, for less than you'd expect if we take on Benintendi's contract? He makes 17 mill per year and has had two down seasons.
Cubs. We've been rumored with Jameson Taillon for a few years now. He makes 18m the next two years, and would be a great stable addition to the rotation. What if we added Cody Bellinger, who will be making 27 mill the next two years, to the trade? Maybe Bellinger isn't the MVP guy we thought he would be, but he bounced back to become a good player.
Mariners. They have a lot of good starting pitching. Mitch Haniger is making 17 mill and old/struggling. Could we part with a declining asset like Baty, take on that contract, and get a pre-arb guy?
Just thinking out loud, but it's amazing that we have a really great FO who can be creative, find diamonds in the rough that people like us wouldn't know, and also have the resources to do things like above.
