Luis status

"he did a lot of things that would drive a coach crazy tonight". Why is it that I'm the only one on this board who seems to have seen what Rick saw???? Reply from Panther in 3,2,1...šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

All kidding aside, the things he did wrong are correctable. Just like the things Jenkins was doing wrong were correctable(are you listening Marillac?). Now, if Rick can get all these kids play within themselves, and as a cohesive unit, as we head in to the New Year, then maybe, just maybe, we can make a little noise in March.

Have a Happy(and safe) New Year all.
Monte, sorry I took five days to respond, been preoccupied with the college application process for my granddaughter. Most times just read game threads or if something really catches my eye. So far, she has been accepted at St Johns and SUNY Albany. Waiting to hear from five more. Her dream school is Villanova, WTF!!!

One of the problems with college basketball now is that as soon as a player like Luis shows potential, people are in their ear talking about the next level. What I have seen recently with players with "potential", is a lot of them are playing more for themselves than the school they represent. Mark Jackson, who played 17 seasons in the NBA, did not start his first two years at St Johns. Over four years in school, he developed and matured as a player and young man. There is a lot of pressure placed on today's players to perform and get paid as soon as possible. This causes some to play yo get stats, instead of practicing and playing to get better.

In Luis' case, he chose to come to St Johns and play for Coach Pitino. I believe that if he continues to accept Coach Pitino's guidance and coaching, he will have a successful career here and in the future

Well said Panther, and thanks for the insight. I hear what you're saying about Luis and completely agree. I doubt that he reads this board, and if he does I doubt he listens, but if he does read and listen, he's a goner after this season based on what our fanbase think of his NBA potential lol. At least he is getting paid, but of course he still has people in his ear about the really big bucks and the league.

As for the college
application/admissions/decision process, I remember it quite well(X 2) and wish you, Anna and Brianna the best of luck with it. Excited to here what the final choice is.

Best of luck to your granddaughter. The college application process can be stressful. I am sure she will be happy and successful wherever she attends.

Brianna presenting her case to Jay Wright.
What a great photo of Brianna and Jay Wright . Reminds me of our own Granddaughter a few years ago .

She applied to a lot of Schools , NotreDame , Villanova and Georgia Tech among them .

Her Mother was a Executive at Nike and through various connections , arranged a visit to Nova and a invitation to watch a Cats practice . Jay arranged some time to meet her. and gave her one of those bracelets that has the team name on it . She had already been accepted by the School . She came home from the visit raving about Villanova and Jay .

Needless to say, the very next Day she got her acceptance letter from ND . And , Nova finished 2 nd .

She finished her 4 years in SBend and is now applying to Med School .
Panther , as difficult as College Apps are , Med School apps and the requirements almost make kids think otherwise about becoming a Doctor .

Good Luck to Brianna , Villanova is a great school with a classy Student Body . And , excellent Academics .

Pray this kid stays healthy. We havenā€™t had a forward with this much raw ability since Shelton Jones. Also has a bit of David Russel in him as well.
Shelton Jones is a great comp, actually. I never saw David Russell play, but I played against Jones in HS and watched almost every game in his career with the Johnnies.

An indication of how few star players have recently played in the StJā€™s basketball fans draw reference to players who played 44 years ago.

Letā€™s hope StJā€™s fans will someday be able to draw comparisons to star players who have within the last decade.

Last year Luis shot 79% on his FTs and went to line a lot. Read somewhere his ability to draw fouls in traffic is something he strives for. I guess only caution would be he seems injury prone and will too much contact be a negative over time?

We have had so many slashers over the years, so nice to have a guy, if he can stay on the court, with a nice stroke and driving ability. Yes, the BE is a tougher league than A10, but I think we will be pleased with Luis this season.

He clearly is a D1 player, and the jump in competition will most likely bring out the best in him.

That young man is nowhere near maximizing his potential.

Another year under rick and that kid could be staring at a first round selection.

All this time we could have had a Nike sneaker hookup and you've been hiding this on us you Sly Fox ? :)

Yes sir. He was literally my first favorite Johnnie. I used to call him ā€œDoctor Dā€ because he reminded me of Julius Erving. He threw down some of the NASTIEST tomahawk dunks Iā€™ve ever seen.
He was a skywalker no doubt, and an all Big East player, and a very exciting player, but a different kind of player than Luis IMO. Not as fluid, didn't have as good a handle and didn't have a very good outside.

Luis hasn't proven to be a good outside shooter, but his form is good and I think he'll develop in to a decent shooter. I see Luis as a 2 or a 3. Where as DR was definitely a 4.

Having said all of this, if Luis develops in to an all big east level player, we'll all be thrilled. Time will tell.
