Luis status

Jenkins got himself and hit the same shot to win the Hofstra game. Considering they could foul I was impressed with what he did. He got a good shot and it left both Joel and Ledlum with putbacj opportunities just beyond them. And then still left a tough but makeable shot for Dingle that would have counted.
He missed a wide open Soriano on literally the exact same play he lobbed to Soriano the last scoring play at 2:07. In fact, Kalkbrenner committed much earlier to him the last play, making it a much easier pass.

All Jenkins had to do was score 1 point the last two possessions OR gather a rebound on defense. He did neither and he denied everyone else on our team the chance to even try. He was 5-16 when he decided to take that last shot and not lob it to Joel — who was motioning for the lob. He knew it wasn’t his night and he shot it anyway.

He would have had to get a pass over Kalkbrenner with little time on the clock a deflection would have ended the game without a shot. A perfect pass would have won it but with 7' of arms coming at you not so easy. It was a decent look, can't fault him. Having 2 fouls to give gave Creighton a huge advantage on final possession.

There are two key differences in the frames you captured. One, there was no weak side help along the baseline on the lob that was thrown. It was wide open behind Kalkbrenner. On the last posession, there was a defender along the baseline that easily could slide over for help. Second, Creighton still had a foul to give. If DJ throws a pass there and is fouled we get the ball side out with about 2 seconds left. If he takes the shot and is fouled then we get foul shots. The key was getting Kalkbrenner to commit to help. Once he does that, you have Joel and Ledlum attacking the glass without Kalkbrenner able to factor in. Was it perfect: no. But, it was a play that had a decent chance of success.

Luis was invisible last night. He needs to pass the ball more and develop a 3 point shot.
I don't think he likes Joel. In all they games he's played he only passed to Joel once and that was when Joel popped out to set a screen for him. RJ declined it and dribbled for 5 seconds and passed Joel the ball at the just passed the top of the key. Prime position for a center to be getting the ball :D

Since when does Jenkins think about %s? There is a 60% chance he misses any field goal. There is probably a 75% or better chance he misses any off-balance shot like he settled for.

The last time we scored at 2:07 it was an identical play and it was actually a much tougher pass because Kalkbrenner didn’t commit as early as he did on the final play.

Jenkins decided he was going to shoot it before he even received the inbounds. He also shot the possession before.

It's a dicey proposition passing the ball with 2 seconds left when the opponent has a foul to give. A well coached team, like Creighton, just fouls as soon as you're looking to pass game over. In related news: Lake Tahoe skier killed in avalanche - Daniss Jenkins found responsible.

I just wonder if there is more to the Luis story limiting his playing time. Yes, he is prone to making mistakes, and I'm sure Pitino is well aware of deficiencies that need to be improved.

I'd also say after the late heroics vs. Providence, including the brilliantly athletic offensive rebound of a free throw in the closing seconds, that he is the one guy capable of doing big things in big moments that others can't. In short a guy who athletically is a difference maker who doesn't seem to be fazed by pressure late in games.

Yes with more exposure we've seen warts, but also some explosive capability. I'd want him on the floor late in close games, but then again, I'm not Rick Pitino (not that there's anything wrong with that 😀 )

The issues re his inconsistency I sense are multiple including the tenderness of his shins. I believe with that we will continue to see flashes of brilliance and some struggles. We probably have to live with the ups and downs since he is an offensive talent, rebounds and can make big plays. On D imo he just needs to pay greater attention to game plan, details, etc.

All of this is pure speculation about Luis . Who knows if he wasn’t feeling well and had tried to give it a go and play ?

Statistics would tell us , if Pitino and Dingle have Covid , it’s very likely other players may be Ill or getting Ill . Hope not but , …..

It’s interesting the diversity of opinion on the Board about Luis . Some are convinced he is a sure fire NBA player . Others feel , there is much to work on before the League would be possible .
We will see .

And some of us don’t care at all about the NBA would rather see him contribute meaningfully at St. John’s, namely me :giggle:

When my girls played AAU HS ball, of which i coached 2 years, the most nauseating phrases uttered by parents were "When she gets to the next level" and whether their kid would play "D1, d2, or D3" ball. Certainly some of the high level teams which I did not coach had many girls who played college. The team I coached, although most if the girls were the best player on their hs team had maybe one or two".

When on parent repeated how his very poor shooting and ball handling kid should play guard for us because at 5.7 she'd have to play guard at the next level, i finally told him , "Not to be mean, but there won't be a next level for her."

As just another parent on another team, when a dad kept going on about "D1, D2, or D3", I said, "for almost all of these kids it will be D nothing. "

On here we proclaim too many guys early exits to the nba.

Were my responses too fran like?

No! Actually very realistic . There are several 5 th Seniors on our team who should be ratcheting down their NBA hopes .
Perhaps overseas might be possible .
Beast , you know who I’m talking about . I don’t need to mention names .

As Parents we often see what we want to see in our kids Athletic performances . Which rarely equals what a Scout or Recruiter sees .

One of my High School Classmates made several All Suffolk County BB Teams years ago .He also was attending St John’s as I was .

He told me “ I’m going to try out for the Freshman team as a Walk on.”
I saw him some weeks later and asked how he did . He replied “ I was the last cut on the Freshman team “ How did you know i asked ?

“ Lou told me so and said I was a good BB player but , they already had enough Scholarship guys they had to play before me.”

Who were those Guys ? Johnny Warren , Rudy Bogad, etc .
Lou also told him . “ You could probably play at Niagara , Manhattan , maybe Fordham . And ,I could help you transfer if you wanted me to make a Call? “

Good story huh ?

One bad thing about having a team of all new players is that you don't see what happens to your teammates. If you see a year ahead of you not make the NBA but be successful in Europe you may change your expectations or develop new skills so you can play in Europe also.

When Tommy Amaker was at Seton Hall he called the brother of my then gf after he locked down and outscored Ben Gordon in a last second loss.

First thing he said is “I’m not offering you a scholarship” and then said he would be happy to call any mid-majors on his behalf or give him a shot as a walkon. Amaker told him that was the best job he seen anyone do on Gordon in two years.

He ended up starting in the MAAC…which was the appropriate level in spite of his athleticism.
