Luis status

Hope he's healthy soon and gets out on the floor but I'm tempering my expectations about how good he'll be. He's played one game for us, against Holy Cross. Impossible to tell from that. He's a mid major recruit and I don't expect mid majors to make an impact in season one of high major play. Look at Soriano.

On the other hand Olivari is a first year transfer from Rice and Sun Belt and is Xavier's leading scorer at 17.6 ppg.

I hear ya but when there was talk about him entering the portal people were already projecting him to be a second rounder in the nba draft for this upcoming year if he went out. At least that’s my recollection.

Fair enough. It's just a big leap in year one, IMO. Hoping to be pleasantly surpised.

A few weeks from today would mean a return for Luis around the January 10th Providence game. That means five games would be played before then, Xavier, at UConn, Hofstra at UBS, Butler and at Villanova. Winning three of those five games (counting hypothetically Hofstra as a win) would leave us at 2 and 2 in conference and 10 and 5 overall. That would be great IMHO because it leaves us with opportunities in front of us to finish strong and not be buried early. Beating Xavier tomorrow is key. Other than winning on the road against UConn (something we shockingly did just last year) winning any of these games seems very possible. However there is no game among the next five, where a loss would be shocking to me.

I don't think he will be a 2nd round pick after this season but certainly the potential is there for the 2025 draft. But as we know potential isn't a guarantee. I get the feeling from Pitino's comment that he has high expectations for him.

Unless he comes back and wows us the rest of the season AND plays the rest of the season fully agree. Definitely needs to showcase what he can do here.

the reality is even if he is back for the Butler game how much do we see of him? Best case scenario I believe when he would be game ready is February 1. So much time missed!

Newsday 12/20/23

“Luis on the mend

UMass transfer RJ Luis, who hasn’t played since Nov. 25 because of shin splints, was cleared for some basketball activities and did 20 minutes of shooting on Monday. Pitino said Luis, who in his one game was impactful as a scorer, rebounder and defender, has been limited to running in a pool and “is probably about three weeks away.” His shin issues will likely have to be managed all season.”

Cleared for some basketball activities.

Didn't Pitino say he needed 8 practices? If it's limited basketball activities and there's some games without much gaps in between, I feel like Jan 10 against Providence or Jan 13 against Creighton seems more realistic. He also said it could've been preventable, so I don't think they're going to rush him.
