LoVett Future

A blind man could see the huge progress made by Ellison from freshman to sophomore season. Many a win would not have occurred without him. Other than that thanks for stating the obvious to the blind on this board. Never mind the fact that his father is a well respected high school coach in New Jersey where the majority of our prime targets over the next two recruiting classes reside.

I am nothing if not the master of the obvious. Ellison has size and some skill and something of a pedigree. If his skill set ever converges on his opinion of his skill set he'll be something to see. And even if he doesn't he will have had three years in the program and the culture and the system and on the court, which is three years more than most of them - except Amar, and he doesn't count because he still has the stink of Lavin on him. It's highly unlikely that anyone they bring in is going to be better than Ellison. He is though without a doubt the dumbest coach's son in the history of organized basketball. He is astoundingly lacking in court and situational awareness. But as I said elsewhere, sometimes the light goes on no matter how dim the bulb. In Ellison's case even if it doesn't there's only two more years to suffer through.

Wasn't Lavin the son of a coach?
I forget if he was. I can however remember Monte calling him a son of a bitch on numerous occasions on this site :)

Nice one!...and good memory.

yes and special credit to we are sju for serving that one up

This seems to be dragging on a bit, which I take as a positive development. Could it be that Lovett and family are seriously thinking about staying?

What's his rush? The real key is if he's still on campus and attending classes.

Great question...that's usually a good (or bad) sign

I think the rush is for staff to get clarity so they can figure out recruiting needs.

Agree that it would be a great sign if he's still attending classes.

The really dumb part of this decision, especially stated so if he is reading about himself here, is that his high end earning potential over the next couple of years would be about $100,000. After taxes, he would be left with about $60-65K depending on the state tax rate of where he is domiciled.

An SJU education is worth about $50K+ per year including room and board. Then he gets a little bit of spending money on top of that.

Essentially, although the allure of playing overseas is attractive, the compensation is a wash. The only difference is that with a little bit of work he could be a college grad here in a few years, with a different career trajectory. Even if he just wanted to be a HS or college coach, most schools require a college degree to consider a candidate. Depending on where he signs, he may be playing in front of hundreds, and never on TV. Here at SJU, even if he never makes it to the NBA, nearly everyone of his games is televised and his name is known by hundreds of thousands of fans if not more.

My guess is he goes, but that is likely a mistake he may live to regret.

Minus his agent's commission.

As much as I want him to stay, I am at least happy that he will be stealing someone from another country's job. The way US companies outsource jobs I happy it will be going the other way on this one. ;)

You are misinterpreting value versus income. If he stays he gets the value of a free education that is worth 50k+ per year, but he can't put that money in the bank. If he leaves his bank account grows, he doesn't risk getting injured while playing for free, and in a few years he will make enough to pay for the remainder of his education should he need it later.

I can't blame the guy, as much as I would like him to stay. My Dad always told me to get out of school as fast as you can because your starting salary will be there no matter when you get out, but the longer you take the fewer years you will have making your last salary which obviously should be much larger.

Door is open and your avi shows him with Mullin so does it mean he is staying?

Never try to analyze Paultzman's avatars -- it'll drive you crazy, especially if, like me, you always see the glass as half empty. :)

I think it means he's starring in Behind the Red Door, the long awaited sequel to Behind the Green Door.
