LoVett Future

If you follow the basketball fam on Instagram he is still at school. If you remember Harkless and Sampson bounced right after the season ended when they went pro.

And Jordan started robbing drug dealers

The really dumb part of this decision, especially stated so if he is reading about himself here, is that his high end earning potential over the next couple of years would be about $100,000. After taxes, he would be left with about $60-65K depending on the state tax rate of where he is domiciled.

An SJU education is worth about $50K+ per year including room and board. Then he gets a little bit of spending money on top of that.

Essentially, although the allure of playing overseas is attractive, the compensation is a wash. The only difference is that with a little bit of work he could be a college grad here in a few years, with a different career trajectory. Even if he just wanted to be a HS or college coach, most schools require a college degree to consider a candidate. Depending on where he signs, he may be playing in front of hundreds, and never on TV. Here at SJU, even if he never makes it to the NBA, nearly everyone of his games is televised and his name is known by hundreds of thousands of fans if not more.

My guess is he goes, but that is likely a mistake he may live to regret.

Also, SJU is on the Forbes list for colleges that make you rich.

 maybe that will appeal to him.

This seems to be dragging on a bit, which I take as a positive development. Could it be that Lovett and family are seriously thinking about staying?

What's his rush? The real key is if he's still on campus and attending classes.

Great question...that's usually a good (or bad) sign

I think the rush is for staff to get clarity so they can figure out recruiting needs.

Agree that it would be a great sign if he's still attending classes.

I meant why would LoVett be in a rush, understand our situation, but why should he be in any particuar hurry?

Because if he's gonna go pro he needs to spend every waking moment working on his game not reading theology books.

yeah, like that's going to make a big difference. He's never going to make the NBA, he's already got the skill set he needs for Europe or worse.

I read the article differently. Have you all been watching the tournament? There is nothing like it. It's magical. For most of these kids, playing in the tournament will be one of the highlights of their life. Way better than playing in front of a few hundred people in Sioux Falls or a packed house in Beijing.

I guarantee if you speak to DJ, Phil, Deangelo, et al., they will tell you the same.

Marcus has a real chance to do something special next year. If we don't make the tournament, Europe is still there. And maybe, just maybe, after helping to lead a resurgent SJU squad back to the big dance, he gets a legitimate shot at the NBA. Oh yeah, and he gets to enjoy a free education in the interim.

Not so much when its for $75k

There are an awful lot of college seniors who would disagree.

What would they disagree about? That working your butt of for a $75k a year paycheck is magical?

If given the choice between leading their team to an NCAA tournament while enjoying a free education or leaving college a year early to make $75k playing in the development league or slightly more overseas, I suspect most every mature adult would choose the former .

Of course Marcus is not yet a mature adult. I also recognize that the choice is not as black and white as I've framed it and that Marcus and his family may well have economic circumstances that make this decision more difficult.

That said, it's doubtful that the

I suspect there's not a mature adult in the world who would choose being a sophomore liberal studies major at St John's over being a 22 year old playing basketball professionally in Europe for 100K a year.

I was pulled kicking and screaming out of College but that's just me.

No one offering you 100K to play second base for the Paris Mets. Had they been your answer might have been different: they have fat girls in France too.

Define "mature"

I just completed one of those body age calculators and it returned "Methuselah" in giant blinking letters like I had won some sort of dubious award. This to go along with my dementia and I'd take 22 as a janitor either at St Johns or even as a roadie for the North Korean Dennis Rodman All Star team.

It could come down as to where the opportunity to play develops. I would find Spain or Australia much more appetizing than the Mid East or China. Lovett will have his own preferences.

Greece is most desirable location IMO. Where the feta runs free and "taxes" is a word not found in the dictionary. Also we have one of the best leagues in the world behind NBA.
