Jon Scheyer

I’ll add, I’d much rather us consider Tommy Amaker than Scheyer at this point. He’s grown into a pretty good coach and has always been a very good recruiter. He’s not being talked about much, but he has gotten better in many aspects since when he first started coaching. Scheyer I think just too green.

Lol.. I didn’t see that one yet. I know some wouldn’t like the hire, but he’s done a fantastic job at Harvard and also checks a lot of the boxes as a former Dukie. Just sayin...

Yes this Scheyer hire would be what most on here deserve. Not me but most.

If Hurley is off the board, I far prefer Tim Cluess, but if Cragg chose Scheyer, I’d root like all hell that he succeeeds.
Just think it’s the riskier hire and we need experienced hands at the helm.
As others have said, this ain’t Duke.
This’d be a mountain for Scheyer to climb....in shower shoes.
Cluess seems to be strongly supported by the NY basketball HS and AAU network as ‘the guy’ to hire.
That could say it all.

But right after that we should interview the guy who runs the security gate at Duke. Knowing Cragg and working at Duke seem to be the the only qualifications for this job.

Experience was not an issue 4 years ago. The first two years of the “experiment” had a 20 something coaching the team while we paid two million for a figurehead. If Cluess can sell himself and explain his recruiting vision and explain his defensive tactics and hint at an experienced staff then so be it.

Right and that proves/proves it's a bad idea to hire a favored 'son' with nada supporting metrics.

K '72, sorry I responded only to you 'no experience' comment.
Hopefully, Cragg is asking penetrating questions about coaching philosophy, recruiting strategy, player development skills, the need to cohere a sense of 'family' into 'team', the need to build s staff and structure a team to carry out that strategy, etc.
I think Cluess could articulate and practice that vision well.

Cragg will give everything and anything to help Scheyer succeed. If no Bobby or Rick, i'll take my chances with Scheyer slightly over TC. I have a feeling he'd leave no stone unturned recruiting wise, young and energetic. If TC was 10 years younger i'd go with him, but at 60 hmmm

Big day coming up for Cragg...he’s interviewing four currrent Duke team managers and a Duke history professor who once at lunch with Coach K.

Good points, Erick but this first hire is critical to Cragg's career. I think Cragg will make sure the Staff is strong no matter who the coach is, with Hurley having the most flexibility in choosing staff.
At least, that's the hope.
Lol.
Hurley's the safest hire not named Pitino (excluding investigation risk!).
TC has risks but is a solid HC.
Scheyer is the riskiest hire here imo.
We shall see.

No thank you. My alma mater is on its second former top rated assistant (first from Ohio State and now Virgina) sandwiched between a former pro player. We win a whopping 8 games in his first season with little help on the way.

I don’t want an asst especially one with so little experience. I can’t see why this particular one. He has no ties to the area. The first chance an ACC or Midwest school comes he will run.

Who doesn't have 'knives out' as you say for them

I'll support whoever they hire. I think the fans will destroy Cluess for being to old and not coming from a higher-level D1 program. They will destroy a Scheyer because he's too young - unless he brings in assistant coaches from AAU programs that have highly ranked players in their back pocket.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't think there is anyone the knives won't come out for.

But look across the board. How many coaching hires for any school, any job is universally loved.
