Jon Scheyer

Who doesn't have 'knives out' as you say for them
I'll support whoever they hire. I think the fans will destroy Cluess for being to old and not coming from a higher-level D1 program. They will destroy a Scheyer because he's too young - unless he brings in assistant coaches from AAU programs that have highly ranked players in their back pocket.
The only realistic candidate at this point is Cluess! If Scheyer name drop doesn't make that clear to some of you I guess nothing will.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't think there is anyone the knives won't come out for.

But look across the board. How many coaching hires for any school, any job is universally loved.
They only hire that would not be universally panned would a coach in his 40s, with D1 head-coaching experience, from a power 5 / really awesome mid-major program. Unfortunately, we're probably not going to get that - because that coach is already locked-up, or donors would lock-that coach up.

At this point, I would probably prefer a young guy at this point, like a Scheyer - but you have to give him six years.

Norm part deux

I quickly realized that the whole "he worked under Coach K" thing usually doesn't guarantee success. Wojo was a very big name when Marquette got him, but he has underachieved with tons of talent. Decent but not great coach. Coach K guys are very hit or miss...like someone else said he's used to Duke where there are rainbows everyday and ESPN bowing to them every second. This is a very different job and you will have to be one of the hardest working coaches in the country IMO just to get us to be a regular NCAA team. On the other hand I do like that he's young...I just get nervous that he's never had HC experience.

Could be. But any hire we have will be a gamble.

I hope they hire Scheyer so that I can look forward to your post in 2020 about how you miss the glory years of 2019 under Mullin

Yeah but this looks like hitting on 19 in blackjack

I ran this rumor by my duke buddies to see what they thought. None of them thought it was a good idea and they thought scheyer isn’t ready for St. John’s/nyc (but opined maybe he’d be ready for somewhere like northwestern). Not exactly a vote of confidence from a group of people likely to overrate at least a bit how good scheyer would do. They were also resolute in thinking we should hire pitino....

Perhaps Cragg did not float Scheyer name out there. Press throwing darts is better possibility.

Spot on / +1 / and any other superlatives I can't think of!

Hopefully worst case of misguided dart throw since the scene in Young DR Frankenstein

I’m not advocating for Scheyer, but I will defend him as clearly a better hire than Roberts. Scheyer is a risk as he has never been a head coach. Roberts was a known disaster who was 24-84 at Queens College as a head coach. Hiring Roberts was not a risk it was the college basketball equivalent of tanking. Unless it is an attempt at trolling I can’t believe anyone is comparing any candidate to him.

Imagine if Cluess was 24-84 at Post. Would he be a candidate? That’s Roberts.

Lol...hell would freeze over first. I don't think any coach has ever done less than Mullin for a major program in terms of effort and decision-making. What keeps coming out in the press i.e. telling players he's resigning over the phone is really disrespectful. Listen, I know he was going through a lot but we all go through things. Maybe not always to the same degree, but we all go through it while simultaneously performing our duties at work. He proved all the rumors true that he viewed us as a pet project, not to be taken seriously.

That being said, it would look foolish if we went through all this just to get Cluess. Pitino isn't happening the feds just ensured it. Scheyer may be our pick because he's the last one standing.

Cragg knows Scheyer
Cragg has an open job.
Would be nice of Cragg to drum up interest in Scheyer

“God creates dinosaurs, God kills dinosaurs, God creates man, man kills God, man brings back dinosaurs.”
My quote makes as much sense.
Scheyer is a white guy who played at Duke doesn't need any help.

The problem with Scheyer, other than the fact that he has zero experience as a head coach, is that the media has now drummed up support for Cluess, including the not-so-subtle implication that the NYC high school coaches will crap all over SJU because they picked the inexperienced Duke boy over the Long Island legend.

As agents often do as well. You never know who plants interest pieces and for what purpose.
