Jon Scheyer

Seems to me that any HC candidate on our List at this point carries various degrees of risk.
Can a successful mid-major coach succeed at St. John's (Cluess, Moser)?
Can young and hungry HCs like Odom or Rhoades turn it around here and be trusted to not bolt before the mission is accomplished? And what state would they leave the program and what kind of rebuild would then ensue?
Can seasoned successful coaches, like Brey or Beard or Martin or Matta or even the likes of Amaker or Dawkins be lured here, what would they cost, and how long would they stay?
Can young and hungry ACs like Scheyer or Nate Thomas be trusted with the HC position here?
How long would they stay?
Is Rick Pitino a dark fantasy of Tom Bradley...and what are the risks with Ricky (not Tom!)?
And what would be the time frame to ink the most suitable candidate?
What state would the roster be in on the day one of these guys inked a deal and what state would it be in the day one would leave?
The two guys I prefer are the least sexy, the most 'measurable', and the easiest to sign.
Cluess or Moser.
Cluess is the better 'fit' for SJU, imo.

I guarantee he’s never seen the problems at Duke that he’s going to encounter here. Moser I would take a chance on. Anyone who was an assistant to Majerus works for me
It seems highly unlikely Jon Scheyer will come here. If he does, it’s because he’s a basketball genius that both Coach K thinks could handle St. John’s and Cragg does and we should be excited bc then he’s prob going to be amazing with us before jumpin back to duke.

More likely, cragg is giving scheyer some pub to help him in the future.
He's the associate head coach at coach. He spent 5 years under the tutelage of the greatest coach in college basketball.
If he builds a program here pay to keep him. If he succeeds include a 4 mil buyout.
How has Woj done at Marquette?
Three consecutive post season appearances. Past 4 years has won 19 games followed by 3 20+ wins per season. We've done a little worse.
Possible Scheyer could do the same here...
It’s possible Marco Badi could do the same here...
Baldi would jump ship to Iona quicker than Scheyer would to Duke...nonstarter!

Scheyer is 11 years younger than Wojo. Pass.
We are at a critical juncture in our program, with now 3 head coaches in a row being canned. We need someone with at least some recent HC experience. That was one of the key things that Mullin, Lavin and Norm all lacked.

3? Try 6!

So now I put our odds of getting scheyer at 30 pct and GSJ at 20 pct. not sure we can crawl back to cluess if porter decides to stay. Scheyer is cheap, probably no buy out and won’t be offended we didn’t pick him first or second.

Feels a little like one of those little kids from game of thrones becoming head of their house by default but hey for every robin Arryn there is a little lady Mormont!

Seems to me, until Chris bolted out west (and I say this as a huge Mullin fan) that we haven't had an issue with anyone bolting in about 50 years. I don't know the whole FF situation to be fair. All of that happened while I was stationed in Germany and it was really hard to follow. My view...
Lou - retired (too soon) (though I will give you that Lou jumped to the ABA for three years)
Brian - let go (justifiably in my opinion)
FF - an enigma to me
Jarvis - fired for obvious reasons (I am not counting Clark as he was more of an interim)
Norm - fired
Lavin - Fired
Mullin - jetted back west

For people who say SJU isn't a destination for coaches, none of the coaches gave up on their job. For various reasons, the administration gave up on them. I am not saying it wasn't justifiable but I am saying that people have come with the intention of staying and since Lou nobody, with the possible exception of FF, has left willingly until CM.

Lavin and Mullin significantly under performed in their role. They started off out of the gates quick but they both underperformed.

If Cragg is advocating Scheyer, I'm just about done supporting this program. That goes for Dawkins too. If he wants a comfortable hire for himself let him hire a Dookie to sharpen his pencils. LAst thing we need here is a project or someone from the old boys network.

Agreed, Beast. Just about the only hire i would prefer over GSJ is Scheyer. Could be that this was the guy Cragg wanted all along.

Agree on that. The idea of watching another first time head coach come in here and learn on the job makes me nauseous.

I am dead set against us hiring an assistant--any assistant whether its Scheyer, GSJ, or anyone else--for this job. The pressures brought to bear by the NYC media and fanbase alone are just too much for someone with training wheels.

The interesting thing is that it supposedly was Cragg who was advocating for Cluess. And Dickie V--who is the mouthpiece for Duke--was also (out of the blue) promoting Cluess for the job late last week.

I think it will be a mid-major coach who gets the nod. If they're talking to the Yale coach, they have opened it wide. I think Ryan Odom has to be a candidate as well.

I agree with you guys, but frankly I'm getting a bit desperate and was noodling that Scheyer would be a 'quick' hire and maybe we could surround him with great ACs...but I agree.
That said, as I said y'day this 'search' has become a 'comedy of errors' and it ain't funny.
Lol.

Thank you for your service. Spent the summer after graduating SJU in Heidelberg with a buddy who was stationed in the army there and working for NATO. Funs times.
