Jon Scheyer

I believe he's married.
Lol!!!
I could live with Scheyer.
That's curious (and I'm not linking Dink's joke here), you would support hiring Scheyer but, if I recall correctly, are against hiring Cluess?
Just asking.

Current mood: My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

SJU is not in the position to make a coaching decision based on potential. Recruiting is at 2 & 3 star recruits at best. If Scheyer is the best we can do let's just drop to the A10 or CAA. We haven't been consistent or relevant in over a decade.

The fact that Scheyer is even a serious candidate is disgusting. He’s been an assistant coach for just five years! Matt A has a better resume in many respects.

Let’s see, Scheyer played at Duke, has been lead asst at Duke and even though it’s easy to say Duke recruits it’s self I think he’s done more then Matt. And no, I don’t want him as coach

Try 2

Cluess is a class guy and I love the fact that he is from Queens so I am not against him. He wouldn't be my first choice and of course Scheyer wouldn't be either. Just hoping that we can find the next Sean McVay.

Both Cluess and Scheyer are serious candidates because Hurley isn't coming and Pitino was never happening. Cluess has the experience edge but Scheyer came close to getting the Pitt job in 2017. Why? Because he is regarded as super talented in the development of Duke guards. He's a great communicator and teacher and spent 5 years under the greatest coach in college basketball. His background alone may be enough to make high level recruits consider SJ.
Cluess has many of the same qualities and would recruit locally hard.
One is 31 with a world of potential while Cluess is 60. Cluess may have the advantage in overall experience but from high school to college his teams never seemed to advance in any post season play against better competition. Both, therefore, are risks. I think Cragg has spoken with coach to get his feedback and he obviously knows and loves Jon.
I, for one, would love a young, bright coach who would be the first Jewish coach at St. John's in the modern era.

On a ballot absent a Hurley or Pitino 'box', Scheyer is the riskier choice of the two candidates on the board, with probably the higher ceiling.
I'd root for either to succeed here obviously, but prefer Tim Cluess as a safer, more solid pick whom i think would transition well at St. John's.
Interesting choices.
Would Cragg 'risk' his first major hire on a promising candidate with no HC experience?
We shall see.

I agree, he's proven. But is he an option for SJU?

It's unfortunate, but doesn't Matta have major health issues?

Truth be told I shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss Sheyer as a candidate. I don’t know enough about him in terms of coaching etc. I do know that NYC, etc is a difficult place to navigate for a noob coach, nonetheless some of our former coaches. It’s a tough nut to crack. My concern comes from him being green but moreso, he’s been living in that Duke protective bubble for so long. It’s been unicorns and rainbows as he has moved up to AHC. He’s at a place that recruits for itself, coach K is still there etc. SJU is a very different place. It isn’t the Candyland he’s working in now, and I don’t know how that transition will go. He may be the next Brad Stevens. I’m just concerned it might be a bit of a culture shock here, as a first time HC with a “weathered” fan base here, as opposed to at Duke where he farts and the student body gives him high-fives for it.

I'm pretty sure Mullin had just farted when I high fived him at the Cal game this year. True story.

Agree with your other points MCN. Scherer might be a good coaching prospect, but this is a tough job to step into. I wouldnt want someone that green.

Ah yes, a young associate head coach from a storied program facing a major rebuild.

What could possibly go wrong?

Most people here praised the Mullin hire when it happened and look how that worked out. Most people here are bashing the potential hire of Scheyer so I say let's do it.
