That's curious (and I'm not linking Dink's joke here), you would support hiring Scheyer but, if I recall correctly, are against hiring Cluess?
Just asking.
Cluess is a class guy and I love the fact that he is from Queens so I am not against him. He wouldn't be my first choice and of course Scheyer wouldn't be either. Just hoping that we can find the next Sean McVay.
Both Cluess and Scheyer are serious candidates because Hurley isn't coming and Pitino was never happening. Cluess has the experience edge but Scheyer came close to getting the Pitt job in 2017. Why? Because he is regarded as super talented in the development of Duke guards. He's a great communicator and teacher and spent 5 years under the greatest coach in college basketball. His background alone may be enough to make high level recruits consider SJ.
Cluess has many of the same qualities and would recruit locally hard.
One is 31 with a world of potential while Cluess is 60. Cluess may have the advantage in overall experience but from high school to college his teams never seemed to advance in any post season play against better competition. Both, therefore, are risks. I think Cragg has spoken with coach to get his feedback and he obviously knows and loves Jon.
I, for one, would love a young, bright coach who would be the first Jewish coach at St. John's in the modern era.
On a ballot absent a Hurley or Pitino 'box', Scheyer is the riskier choice of the two candidates on the board, with probably the higher ceiling.
I'd root for either to succeed here obviously, but prefer Tim Cluess as a safer, more solid pick whom i think would transition well at St. John's.
Interesting choices.
Would Cragg 'risk' his first major hire on a promising candidate with no HC experience?
We shall see.
