Jon Scheyer

A non-Pitino/Matta etc hire would cement this team where it has always been. Mid Major. You don't make mid major decisions and expect to become a destination for top players.

Cragg coming from Duke is great and has a lot of positives but imo this would be the one negative. Hopefully we are not just looking at the K coaching tree because theres not much there. Brey is the best of the bunch and he didnt play there he just coached there and hes not leaving ND to come here. Amaker and Dawkins are average coaches at the high major level, their ceiling is already established, they need to stay where they are at. I like what Capel is doing at Pitt but hes not available and wasnt good at OU without Blake Griffin. Wojo has been ok but has underachieved if you ask me. Collins has a tough job at NW and did break their NCAA drought but had a lot of luck involved with close games that year he flopped the next year with the same team. I think hes a solid coach though but I would pass and he probably wont come anyway. Nate James pass. Jon Scheyer may be a good coach one day, he was a heady player, but as far as im concerned he might as well be Greg St Jean or Jared Grasso let him prove himself at a lower level first. Why would we even take the risk with a guy with no HC experience at this point. Hopefully Cragg feels the same way.

I’m confident Cragg reads this site so hopefully he sees the backlash brewing. Sorry Cragg but in the words of a great philosopher

I don't think this is "blowing up". What's going on here is that every die hard fan of the program is looking for any kind of info. Since everyone associated with the program isn't working there anymore, unless your source is Cragg, there isn't much info to be had.

One guy on twitter who has 300 follower and has never posted any kind of scoop before, posts this. It ends up on this board, and everyone goes nuts in the matter of about 10 minutes, because everyone is hitting refresh so fast on this site right now. I would love to look at the redmen.com google analytics page since the news of Mullin.

On twitter every 5 minutes is someone claiming to have a scoop.

I could post one that would have you leaning a different way, here's one from an hour ago:

https://twitter.com/phavrephan4/status/1116062842569068544
I'm aware that Phavre is a joke and doesn't have any sources. He posted about Pitino earlier today, too. It's also easy to tell people are lying when they have 5 followers and say "BREAKING NEWS: HURLEY HIRED! #sjubb".

I've seen Gio's name before and didn't remember him as being one of those people. His posts also aren't claiming than Jon is 100% hired, just gaining momentum. It seemed like it could have some legs.

Hopefully you're right and this doesn't mean anything.
The silence breeds bad information, especially on Twitter as noted above. Let’s see how the search takes form in next few days or so.
If it's not coming from Paultz, Fordham, Panther .... etc and no disrespect if I forgot a few posters here, but I'm not putting any water in it.

This job at this time can’t go to somebody with no head coaching experience. That is no disrespect to Jon Scheyer but he and anybody else with same experience level needs to go get all the kinks out at a lower level first.

With all due respect, we kinda are 'lower level'.

As a fan base we have to come to grips with that reality.

exactly, we are in denial.

We have major issues, no doubt. But we have made the NCAA Tourney twice in the last 5 years and are still capable of attracting top recruits.

We are not DePaul. Yet. This next hire will determine whether we become that.

Unfortunately, not too far off rm4life. Sad to say when my son told his high school friends in NC last year that his Dad was a huge St. John's fan most of them hadn't heard of us. Scheyer will get a head coaching job soon and it may well be at a high major conference level. Totally understand why he's not a top choice for most here (including me), but his name would likely come up for some consideration especially given Duke connection.

They hire this guy I’m not renewing my tickets next year I’m not supporting Norm Roberts part 2. We need a real name head coach with this hire if we really want to be relevant again. Hurley or Pitino or bust!

Ah, c'mon.
Yes, we're under-performed in the Big East and have been in the 'lower levels of the Conference for most of the past 20 years, but we are not a lower-level college program, nor should we be.
No reason on the planet we cannot be in the Top 3 - 5 in the Conference most years.
And if we finally get the HC spot right, that'll happen.

Is this April 1 ? I’m in Chicago for meetings so if this happens someone let me know so I can buy some DePaul gear while I’m here

I'm sorry, but you can't just look at this from a Wins/Losses perspective.

it's about culture, facilities, scholarship, donations, nba players, etc, etc, etc..... i've come to the 'lower level' realization so that i'm not living in denial. it's been this way for 25 years. old school guys like Dickie V or Raftery will always sing our praises and keep us as part of the conversation, as they too reminisce. but in reality, we have a really good brand name in St. John's with a 'lower level' basketball program.

yes i hope we get better. much better. but to think this is a high level position... yeah i don't think so.
This to me seems like the #4 hire... after Hurley, Pitino and Cluess. Cragg would certainly be risking his job with this if it doesn't work out.
Cragg is putting his job on the line with whomever he hires.

He had the guts to do the right thing and move on from Mullin and the slow moving train wreck that the next two seasons would have been. That earns him the right to hitch his star to whichever coach he wants in my book.

Can you pick me up an Olujobi jersey while you're at it?

I would welcome Scheyer as the new coach. Duke pedigree. We will be structured, we will play defense, we will have a game plan.
Dawkins, wojo, Collins, Capel all came with no head coach experience and have reached a degree of success.
I think this might have been the plan all the time. Had Andy Borman lined up to produse a possible pipeline with the Rens.
The only possible drawback in my mind is he may use this as a stepping stone.
Give it a chance.

I can put aside my dislike for Duke in hiring Hurley. I simply can't do the same for Scheyer. This can't happen.

have to assume the $ guys will get a vote

I actually like that everyone hates it. Lol I watched a lot of Duke all access this season, came away thoroughly impressed with how Analytical Scheyer was with the game. We hired a guy that never coached at any level in his life and people thought we were back. At least Scheyer was under coach K, is young, and actually recruited before albeit for Duke. Maybe we get a Norm Roberts, maybe we get a college Sean Mcvay, either way, it excites me more the Cleuss and Hurley. If he is hired, welcome him and hope for the best, we have had worse.
