Cragg provides Mullin with show of support

AD Cragg, St. Jean, The DOBO and a grad Asst in Minny supporting Clark. No Mullin or Mitch.

Statement, not posted on school site, and released mid day weekend, makes it seem totally unplanned and reactive to the public noise.

With Mullin elsewhere, it's possible to believe either lawyers / agent are talking and/or both sides planned a cooling off period to reflect on go forward decision.

Solid post, RedstormNC. A mix of 'clues' makes for an intriguing plot.
Lol.

Maybe the legend Lou could reason with him and say"Chrissy, this aint for you big guy, walk away"
With all due respect, this website is not the majority of the base. You don't know what all the season ticket holders want. Neither do I. There are literally only 50, maybe 75 people that post in this board.

All St John's fans that I know, and none of them post,
none want mullin gone.
Pretty close to dead on. I'm not saying anyone is happy with how the season ended, but basketball fundraising is at an all time high, ticket sales are at a 27 year high, and we made the dance. You don't fire a guy and start over on that. My take is that Bobby G. Is squarely in Mullin's corner, hence the Cragg confidence.

And yes, some of the loudest negative voices on here don't reflect the season ticket holders in the aggregate. The mistake of the mob is to think their loud voices is the way everyone thinks. That mentality is why despite all prognostications Hillary isn't queen today.
And if those fans are content with losing, horrible coaching, no recruiting by the head coach and the weakest staff in D1 ball assembled by Mullin himself, that’s what we will get. Cheers to continuing to ride the bottom of the league. We are... a dumpster fire...
What matters more from a business sense, the fans who buy tickets and donate, and both are at 27 year high and all time high, or those unhappy with results watching on TV?

I'm not even taking the position that I'm supporting one position or the other. I will say though, that its fruitless to demand anything when you are not empowered to do so. Whatever will be is out of our hands. Buy tickets or not, donate or not, those are the choices we have.

There is something great about attending games, win or lose. The section 114 gang knows that, and even if I can get a seat back, I love the game from Rockaway in my section. I really like the r-w gang too.

Don't think it's a substitute for winning. It isn't. Everyone wants to win. It's just disconcerting how our fans carry on

We bitched at most of the Jarvis, Mahoney, Roberts, lavin, and now mullin years. The only certainty is changing your own perspective but I fear many here are happy miserable.
And why not bitch if the coach isn't good, are we supposed to be happy losers?
Screw that. I'd rather a miserable loser then a happy loser 100%, atleast as a miserable loser you show you care?
My dad always said show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser. That is why I want a coach that hates losing more than he loves winning.

Before season ended SJU announced that not only was Roberts was coming back for following season but that he was getting an extension to make it clear to recruits and others there was no issue. That sent a clear signal unless a scandal happened Roberts was getting 2 more years minimum before they re-evaluated him. Notice in addition to the extension that both AD and President made clear what their direction was.

...except the 'no extension' this late in the 'game' might be significant as perhaps 'no reaffirming and attached comment from CM with Cragg's 'endorsement' is, as well.
Ah, all these 'clues'...

Don't focus on the people focus on the commitment or in this case lack of commitment.

And you answered my question.

Yup, Otis has his ears to the vibes...

I think Mullin and Mitch work less than Howard Stern does these days

Time for CM to take the James Cagney roll from Angels with Dirty Faces and accept a buy out for the good of the University and it's fan base.

That's very funny and seems sadly true.
Damn, I just want the guy to want to be here and work very hard!
He 'could' do it.
Oh well.

Ive never seen it by my Dad on a few hundred occasions has said a prayer "for a boy who couldnt run as fast as I could"

I have no doubt that CM wants to win badly and, as I have said before, I truly believe there are some aspects that he does extremely well. But, college coaching (and probably sports coaching/managing at any level) is a career choice built upon a passion and is something you chase. In Chris’ case he was chased and the job seems more like a case of something he is trying his his hand at at.

I’m sure he wants to win but not sure whether he has that 50 week a year passion for a job that requires dogged pursuit and comes with a constant pressure to win. That’s not to say that he still can’t succeed. Just means he needs the right help around him.

Great movie. Pat O'Brien was the adult priest of the kid who ran faster than Rocky Sullivan (Cagney).

"What do you know? What do you say?"

Agree completely. It also comes with a lot of ass kissing from kids to their parents, in many cases to their handlers, AAU coaches and often sneaker companies. That is the part that many would find repugnant if you have not worked your way up in that environment, which as we know Coach did not. I think that is Coach’s biggest challenge. If you are a snake oil salesman you would have no problem lying to a kid, but I don’t believe Coach is that type of person.

Very telling that CM is not at the Final 4 where assistant coaches hob nob around and connections are made. Either CM isn't "long" for the job or he can't be bothered to attend. With almost any other coach only one of these alternatives would be possible.

Don't think he went last year either

And this in a nutshell is why it was a mistake to hire him. How can you expect a hall of famer who has all of the prestige that comes with it to suddenly start begging kids to play for his team. It never seemed like an ideal situation, despite what he said in the initial press conference. In fact you could tell how quickly he got sick of that aspect of it and delegated it all to Matt.

Section 3 posts that in order to succeed Mullin needs the right kind of help around him. And this is probably how every poster felt four years ago. He had no involvement with college bb since he left SJU some 30 years ago. He never coached at any level and had no connection to the metro area high school game. But we loved Chris and felt he would surround himself with experienced people and establish relationships with the local high school/ AAU coaches.
For a second it looked like that was his intention but very quickly it appeared Chris felt he could handle things by himself and didn't need to,get nvolved in recruiting. Four years have gone by and he refuses to change even though he can't be happy with the results. This is probably the main reason many are calling for a change.

I agree that a lot of D1 coaching aspects do sound crappy, but there seems to be a whole lot of middle ground between the one extreme of non-stop ass kissing and the other extreme of not showing up during recruiting visits or failing to contact recruits after they commit. One seems like a pain while the other is common sense.

We can talk about hiring the right assistants and whether or not it is too late for that, but there is still so much wrong with the HC position. Another example is how Mullin (and Mitch) should be in Minnesota today supporting Clark.

I love St. John's basketball, but if I were a recruit I would absolutely not play for this coaching staff.

I often go back in my head to that first Spring in 2015, when he and his Staff paid home visits to Cheick Diallo and Brandon Sampson and came back 'empty'.
I could be wrong but, to me, that soured him on 'recruiting' and 'humbling' yourself to 18 yr old kids.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He does care, so he should do the right thing and step down, so someone that wants to win could take over as coach, and do everything a college coach needs to do. If he doesn't step down then I'll lose all respect for Chris and look at him just like Mark Jackson. If he really cares about the school then he should do the right thing.

If he's here next year, then I won't watch next year.
Just sick of people coming to coach SJU, thinking that it's a f'ing vacation, SICK OF IT.
