Cragg provides Mullin with show of support
Not surprised he isn't at final 4. I believe he can't even be bothered to attend the Big East coaches meetings.
Oh well, and to think that if he won't step down, we're stuck with him next year.
Makes me boil.

Very telling that CM is not at the Final 4 where assistant coaches hob nob around and connections are made. Either CM isn't "long" for the job or he can't be bothered to attend. With almost any other coach only one of these alternatives would be possible.
Don't think he went last year either
Not sure if you or anyone on the board would know the answer to this question. do most coaches attend?

I'd say more go than don't go.
It's just like one of those things where you notice those not at the party instead of those who are

Yep, I've never been a fan of those type of events but more often than not forced myself to go.

This however is one of those fun parties that any college basketball fan would love to attend.

Well, one should attend the showcase event of one's 'industry', imo...not to mention show up and support your guy in competition.
P.S. But. to be fair, there may be 'special circumstances' going on behind the scenes that might make it a good idea for him to not show up...even to root for Marvin.
We don't know...

Like being at the Warriors game tonight against the Clippers as they try to clinch the Conference title?

Great place to network especially if you are looking to rebuild your staff.

Everyone gets called "Coach" even if you are not one.
I have no doubt that CM wants to win badly and, as I have said before, I truly believe there are some aspects that he does extremely well. But, college coaching (and probably sports coaching/managing at any level) is a career choice built upon a passion and is something you chase. In Chris’ case he was chased and the job seems more like a case of something he is trying his his hand at at.

I’m sure he wants to win but not sure whether he has that 50 week a year passion for a job that requires dogged pursuit and comes with a constant pressure to win. That’s not to say that he still can’t succeed. Just means he needs the right help around him.
Sorry I missed the posts where you state what aspects Mullin does well. Could you please repeat them. Thanks!

Why go? To see marv? To see TO a former player? To network w assistant coaches since your only recruiter left? Nah no biggie st Jean will do everything now

It's the mullin way.

Maybe the legend Lou could reason with him and say"Chrissy, this aint for you big guy, walk away"
With all due respect, this website is not the majority of the base. You don't know what all the season ticket holders want. Neither do I. There are literally only 50, maybe 75 people that post in this board.

All St John's fans that I know, and none of them post,
none want mullin gone.
Pretty close to dead on. I'm not saying anyone is happy with how the season ended, but basketball fundraising is at an all time high, ticket sales are at a 27 year high, and we made the dance. You don't fire a guy and start over on that. My take is that Bobby G. Is squarely in Mullin's corner, hence the Cragg confidence.

And yes, some of the loudest negative voices on here don't reflect the season ticket holders in the aggregate. The mistake of the mob is to think their loud voices is the way everyone thinks. That mentality is why despite all prognostications Hillary isn't queen today.
And if those fans are content with losing, horrible coaching, no recruiting by the head coach and the weakest staff in D1 ball assembled by Mullin himself, that’s what we will get. Cheers to continuing to ride the bottom of the league. We are... a dumpster fire...
What matters more from a business sense, the fans who buy tickets and donate, and both are at 27 year high and all time high, or those unhappy with results watching on TV?

I'm not even taking the position that I'm supporting one position or the other. I will say though, that its fruitless to demand anything when you are not empowered to do so. Whatever will be is out of our hands. Buy tickets or not, donate or not, those are the choices we have.

There is something great about attending games, win or lose. The section 114 gang knows that, and even if I can get a seat back, I love the game from Rockaway in my section. I really like the r-w gang too.

Don't think it's a substitute for winning. It isn't. Everyone wants to win. It's just disconcerting how our fans carry on

We bitched at most of the Jarvis, Mahoney, Roberts, lavin, and now mullin years. The only certainty is changing your own perspective but I fear many here are happy miserable.
No. Our basketball coaching choices have been miserable, our record has been miserable and we’ve been at the bottom of the league for decades. We hire Mullin who has looked awful as many of the coaches before him, and he had no experience coaching. He hired a miserable staff except for Matt who is the sole person that brought the talent here. I wholeheartedly disagree. The choices that the fools at SJU have made over the last 3 decades give or take have been miserable. Those things have made us the stalwart fans who’d like to see a good SJU team once in a while miserable... Let’s not make this out to be something it’s not. Fans here don’t want to be his way. SJU administration has sucked big time picking coach after coach after coach.

What’s miserable is Mullin. His demeanor, his inability to hire, recruit, coach nor anything else. Our record this season was solely due to Matt bringing in talent. You’re right, our complaints fall on deaf ears maybe. I don’t want to be miserable. I want a coach that has some experience, works hard and recruits hard and I want SJU in the top half of the league. Don’t say that we are all happy being miserable. We are tired of miserable coaching. Mullin’s shitty attitude isn’t helping.

PS. What matters most from a business perspective is winning. Mullin’s basketball legend status will only get him so far.

Well one would think Cragg grants Mullin short extension this week or so or not. If the latter, that is telling imo and how CM reacts should be interesting.

Not sure how you justify an extension unless (i) you know that you need to grant one to recruit ACs and players and (ii) are wilnig to eat 1 or 2 years if/when it doesn't work out.

That's the rub. I think most here have come to the conclusion that this is not a long term situation any longer, but how do you get kids and ACs to sign on? Unfortunately, Chris has apparently chosen not to do what I had hoped he'd do: "retire" and allow the admin to go out and get a real coach.

To me, Chris' other coaching limitations aside, it is just inexcusable for the HC and his primary assistants to be completely disinterested in and divorced from recruiting, which is the lifeblood of a college basketball team. If Chris has that attitude and approach, he should do the right thing and retire. If he fails to, Cragg should, instead of extending, let it ride, and make a move after next year, assuming it will be as bad as it now looks like it could be.

Why waste the money on a year or more that the staff won't be here, and further financially limit your options?

If Cragg is not willing to cut Chris loose now (and Chris won't "do the right thing"), then take the pain next year and then you only have to eat 1 year.

Yes, Cragg certainly could let it ride and not extend and Chris could just get to work or consider his options I guess.

Please, no extension!!!

CM has already shown an unwillingness to make the necessary adjustments or step aside when needed. If we extend him 2 years, he will be here for 3 years.

If you take the emotion out of it, below is his resume with what are IMO his pros and cons:

Pros:
-Legendary player and face of the program...aka he's Chris Mullin
-Helps draw big crowds when we are supposed to be good
-1 NCAA berth though last team in, appearance in top 25 1 time

Cons:
-32 games below .500 in 4 years of conference play including 0 that were .500 or better
-Well under .500 overall in 4 years
-Does not recruit hard if at all
-Does not do much of in game coaching and defers to GSJ
-Spends a lot of time away from campus especially in off-season
-Has reportedly refused to change coaching staff when given opportunity
-Position-less basketball with almost no emphasis in big men
-Green light to shoot even when shots are stupid...doesn't reel players in
-Repeatedly underachieves even with very good talent
-Tons of transfers that I believe lead the Big East (leaving us)
-Has yet to finish in top 5 in conference
-Poor player development

Just tried to be as objective as possible...if you can argue against any of those then I invite it. My point being...is this really someone you want heading your program?

I have confidence Cragg will cut through the noise and make the right decision. Since SJU has burned through one AD after another in past few years, my opinion is Administration will back his recommendation within reason. Not doing so would risk losing a guy who appears to have the goods to raise $$, professionalize operations and plan for the future. Just my opinion.
