Cragg provides Mullin with show of support

From what I heard in Minny don't see how both Cragg and CM survive this.

The relationship is pretty broken right now. Chris wants something and Cragg is not prepared to give it to him.
If you think that anything Cragg is doing is unilateral, you are far removed from reality. Cragg is 6 months on the job, and will act in consult with Bobby G. and the Board members that oversee the AD. Anyone in his position who acts on his own is signing his own termination papers.

I don't read any animosity into this. Chris probably asked for 2-4 more years, with the justification that he has improved the team year over year after handed an empty roster. Cragg and the rest of the decision makers, quite reasonably aren't ready to terminate, and as with Lavin, want to see more.

Lavin was a little more complicated because he was entering year 6. Supposedly the school would have extended him, if he took a pay cut. They were really on the fence, and in fact in a survey on here, about 85% of our posters wanted him back. Maybe the kind of posters we have here has shifted but if you took the same poll today, it would be at least 70-30 against. Right now it seems at 90-10 at least against Mullin.
I really don't give a damn what you think or "read into it." I am not reading into anything I have it on good authority of what is going on.

Don't care what you are guessing or educating guessing. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but Chris was denied an extension and went above Cragg in hopes of getting overruled. He is not happy with Cragg.

Agree with it don't agree with it. I don't care.
Who gives a rats ass if Chris is happy or not, there are a lot of people not happy with him, and his stinking attitude.
Bet alot are glad that Cragg has a pair a balls to deny an extension to Chris.

Feels like Mullin is part of a union that will support him no matter how poor results are. Anyone who works in a unionized job knows how frustrating it is busting your tail doing more work than others and putting in more effort only to realize the laziest are protected. I know this would never happen but just theoretically, could Mullin be terminated with cause for the negligence? If he really does not recruit anywhere near enough or put enough effort in, can't you find part of the contract where that can be applied to? I'm no legal expert, just curious. He's not performing his duties as coach. Who knows if anyone has even called him out on it either or if they were too scared.

While I'm thrilled that Cragg is at SJU, his Duke experience over the past 30 years means that there are two things in which we know he has zero experience: (1) firing a men's head basketball coach and (2) hiring a men's head basketball coach. Just saying.

Here's hoping he soon gets experience doing both!

Why do you need experience in firing a coach. If he needs advice ok I'll help.

Forget is name, dont look at him as the school icon, just look at him as just a coach. You evaluate his performance, record, does he recruit? Does he go to big events like the f4, what does he do in the off seaon? He's in cali playing horse with mitch, right?
Does his action show he cares.
Cragg is a very smart man, he knows.

Now on hiring, refer to others.

Should've given him a much smaller guaranteed salary with hefty incentives like $500k per year guaranteed with a $1 mil bonus for making Sweet 16 OR making 3 straight NCAA's. Something like that.

If Mullin doesn't get an extension and stays on as HC, it would be extremely difficult for him to attract top notch candidates for an assistant coaching position. Nobody wants to work for a perceived lame duck HC.

I'm eating 'humble pie' these days.
I supported hiring CM 4 years ago because he was the 'face' of our greatest years, and i strongly believed he would reverse our fall into irrelevancy and be the 'face' of our return to those 'glory' years.
Boy, was I wrong.
That thinking commits the grievous and typically fatal error of hiring a guy you cannot fire without causing a near civil war in the ranks.
The other critical flaw was the Administration's failure to negotiate a buyout clause in the contract--a grave mistake likely linked to the original sin of hiring a 'hero' you have complete faith in, so no need for prudent business acumen.
If this doesn't end well, I hope it ends soon: NO guaranteed extension and bite the bullet ASAP.

if AD Cragg is unable to structure a buyout of Coach Mullin's contract then it is only a matter of time before Coach Mullin returns to the West Coast for good ..... however, if the separation does not occur soon then St. Johns should offer Mullin a contract extension with a REVERSE BUYOUT clause allowing StJohn's to terminate him at anytime after his existing contract term expires for a trulynominal sum.

Such a contract would allow Mullin to have the appearance of stability, save face, and allow his staff to recruit so when Mullin's coaching tenure concludes the roster is not as bare as when he was hired.

That is true. But, if there is indeed some friction between Cragg and Mullin, it is a good sign that he is not afraid to make long-term decisions that are healthy for the athletics department......regardless of who may be upset in the short-term. I would imagine we'll know soon enough.

Brilliant idea Otis.

How about we all change the tone of these discussions.
There's a lot of frustration and strongly held opinions here, but let's try a little courtesy
Why don't posters act like they support the program, and evaluate the coaching staff objectively on merits without personally attacking them?
Fordham posted info and made no comments on Mullin's character nor did he even criticize any of his actions but you right away have to jump to his defense about perceived slights. Just about everything posted on here is poster's opinions. Heard Seth Greenberg on a satellite radio show today and he was addressing his friend Jay Bilas's opinions. He said Jay states his opinions as if they are facts and I immediately thought of you. And don't worry about me at least, as if Mullin departs I won't be throwing any phony praise at him has I don't think he deserves any.

Great idea also, because the $$ amount owed Chris at the end of next season would be roughly 1/2 of what's owed presently, making other options more palatable at that time, if need be.
