Cragg provides Mullin with show of support

Well one would think Cragg grants Mullin short extension this week or so or not. If the latter, that is telling imo and how CM reacts should be interesting.
Actually, the more telling sign will be if we announce an assistant in the next week or so. If that happens Mullim will be back for certain. If there is negotiations around staff, it won't happen until Cragg returns from Minnesota. I'm wondering if there is any negotiation involving replacing Mitch to clear space for two experienced college assistants who could help recruit as well as on the bench. If Cragg wanted to remove MR, and Mullin resisted, that could be the catalyst for an exit now.
It's a standoff right now. Cragg already told him no on the extension.
If you know that as a certainty, then that's a termination because he cannot recruit with just 2 years left on a deal. Now if what you say is true, it's little more than a game to force him to resign. Rather than play that game, it would be much better to simply tell him he is not wanted back, and go straight to negotiating a separation, with the payout variable between 6 mos to 1 year salary. No giving him an extension creates a lame duck. A non-guaranteed extension costs the university nothing.
But if there’s no buyout, isn’t a ‘contract’ a contract and the ‘negotiating ‘number’ is: “How much of the $4mm+ are you gonna give me to walk away?”
The guy deserves a fair settlement that exceeds the ‘6 months - 1 year’ range above IF there’s no buyout clause.

This has to be addressed by tomorrow, right? It's been 3 weeks already and we're still on step 0 (which is being generous since Cam and Matt left but haven't been replaced).

All this about C. M. spending time out west, could somebody tell me where does he live ? If his home is not in N. Y. , shame on him and the administration.

It's a fair point. Lavin sought an extension after year 4 and was denied. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't recall him getting any kind of performance-based extension at that time, either.
In any event, we all know how that ultimately ended up from a roster standpoint when he was fired after year 5. So today, it's an interesting dilemma if you're Cragg (and Mullin). I personally don't think Mullin has earned the right to any kind of extension at this point, regardless of who (or how many people) come in as assistants. One or 2 more years of fan pain is in the cards IMO for Cragg to do a proper rebuild.

At this point, I don’t think it’d be fair to the school to extend Chris ‘on any basis’ unless he agrees to change his Staff, i.e., inject Mitch with recruiting ‘smelling salts’ or let MR leave or be reassigned to the SA slot and replace Matt.
Otherwise, it’d be best to suffer through 1 more year and buy CM’s last year out following a losing 2019-20 season.
Here’s hoping something ‘good’ breaks.

I would think GSJ is doing this for experience to help land an NBA job. If he was interested in coaching college then he would be more involved in recruiting. An assistant position at St. John’s is a great opportunity for a mid major assistant coach that can recruit.
Successful recruiters tend to be “salesmen” and relationship builders with a lot of sketchy guys in the AAU world. I never got the impression that Greg was built for that and he may be better suited for the technical and instructional side of things. I am not saying he could not play a complementary role in chasing players however.
. Hmm, it seems many of the Sketchy guys can also be on the College’s payroll too. Witness the ones named at Auburn , Chuck Person, and others who are likely going to do some Jail Time . You aren’t advocating for St John’s to go that route that many of the Elite Schools do as a matter of routine ? Others here seem to want a Win , at all cost Game Plan . Which is not the University’s Mission . Under Mullin’s watch none of l his players have been embroiled in any outside activities , that could reflect unfavorably on the school . No Academic dismissals , no Long term suspensions , no Drug Busts or worse . Many here think ours and pretty much the entire BE Conference , excepting Villanova, can challenge the large State Universities or Duke , on Recruiting Blue chip players . We can’t for most reasons that have $$$ attached to them . And , we aren’t admitting borderline students either or , faking their grades . Mullin has run a clean program that I think is quite acceptable to most Alums . I know it does for me . Advocating for Mullin’s release , without a full contract term , isn’t acceptable . Roberts and Lavin pretty much were given that time to improve the Program , Mullin deserves that and actually more in my opinion . Speculating on what is going on is like listening to the Gypsy Fortune tellers . Making up fake news is reprehensible and certainly doesn’t speak well of those who post it .

From what I heard in Minny don't see how both Cragg and CM survive this.

The relationship is pretty broken right now. Chris wants something and Cragg is not prepared to give it to him.

As an alumni and fan ,asked and giving contributions to the program . I would like to know ,if the news being reported here is fake. Does He send his time recruiting or his out west , does he have a home in N.Y. and In California, why did so many players leave him ,why did Matt A. worried about his future, and so on?

I’ve been a MullinHC-Phile these past 4 years, but I guess I’ve drunk much less Kool-Aid than most in that cluster.
On what basis does the guy deserve an extension?
On the basis of ‘performance, Chris ‘deserves’ ‘probation’ with ‘maybe’ a ‘non-guaranteed 2-year extension’ IF he reassigns Mitch, replaces Matt, and recruits like other HCs recruit.
Otherwise the school—St. John’s—is better off biting the bullet through next season, buying out CM’s last year, and moving on.

Why? Why? Why? As in why don't you visit the board more if you really want to know. But here's the abridged version.

Coach's family lives out west after trying NY for a year. Coach likes to spend time with his family. Coach's responsibilities are on the east coast. This is either a problem for his family situation or for his ability to do the job. Not sure which.

The news here is real in that more and more folks are talking about how coach and his staff don't appear to have either a handle on or an inclination for many of the basic functions that an established D1 staff need to accomplish, especially since the only real recruiter is gone. For that reason the AD who comes from an established D1 program is trying to implement change. The coach's response to this is being debated openly but not by the coach so while that is not necessarily fake news it ends up more in the realm of commentary or opinion. That said some people's commentary or opinion should be trusted more than others. I leave the decision on who those people will be up to you and reserve the right to judge you on your decisions.

Why do players (and Matt A) leave? For what they perceive to be greener pastures. Why are other pastures perceived to be greener to so many so often? I again leave that to you since it is again a matter of opinion.

Sounds like Coach asked for an extension and didn't get it. He now needs to decide whether he really wants to continue as coach under those conditions or work out some kind of mutually acceptable walk away. Tough decision and maybe he is taking a little time to think about it and discuss with his family. He's entitled to that.
Cragg by all accounts is a very capable, thoughtful guy who is not going to do anything he doesn't feel is in the program's best interest. I will trust him unless he shows me otherwise. I think this will play itself out in the next several days. Sure hope so.

If you think that anything Cragg is doing is unilateral, you are far removed from reality. Cragg is 6 months on the job, and will act in consult with Bobby G. and the Board members that oversee the AD. Anyone in his position who acts on his own is signing his own termination papers.

I don't read any animosity into this. Chris probably asked for 2-4 more years, with the justification that he has improved the team year over year after handed an empty roster. Cragg and the rest of the decision makers, quite reasonably aren't ready to terminate, and as with Lavin, want to see more.

Lavin was a little more complicated because he was entering year 6. Supposedly the school would have extended him, if he took a pay cut. They were really on the fence, and in fact in a survey on here, about 85% of our posters wanted him back. Maybe the kind of posters we have here has shifted but if you took the same poll today, it would be at least 70-30 against. Right now it seems at 90-10 at least against Mullin.

I really don't give a damn what you think or "read into it." I am not reading into anything I have it on good authority of what is going on.

Don't care what you are guessing or educating guessing. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but Chris was denied an extension and went above Cragg in hopes of getting overruled. He is not happy with Cragg.

Agree with it don't agree with it. I don't care.

Pretty angry, but hey, you've been negative about our program and team since you've started posting here. Perhaps, you should root for Fordham and just pick a better program.

I know this. No AD in Cragg's position would pick a fight between the HC and himself, no less a favorite son, and certainly not an AD who had Coach K "report" to him on an org chart. Cragg's success will be solely measured on the success of the program, and I sincerely doubt he would create a falling out..

I know this. Bobby G. is no dope and in a kickoff speech earlier this season spoke concisely about the value of value of a winning basketball team to the branding of the university and to enrollment and donations. It was to a small group of team supporters, and Mullin and staff were present.

I believe Cragg reports to Gempeshaw but it could be to Oliva. If it's Gempeshaw, Mullin would be foolish to go over Cragg because Cragg would not act alone in this.

Maybe Mullin is negotiating an exit, and the only thing more disgusting than the shit you guys are posting about him now will be the phony praise you heap on him when he exits.

How about we all change the tone of these discussions.
There's a lot of frustration and strongly held opinions here, but let's try a little courtesy

Why don't posters act like they support the program, and evaluate the coaching staff objectively on merits without personally attacking them?

He might be better suited at Stanford, Northwestern, or an Ivy, where there's a lot less muck to deal with.
