Cragg provides Mullin with show of support

if he doesn't step down he will only tarnish his reputation further. Its only gonna get worse. Writing on the wall, next season will be ugly for him staying.

Maybe he will have an epiphany, Chicago, and fulfill your hopes.
Thanks Bama.
That’d be a great day.
The kid who willed himself to become one of the greatest college players of all time—through grit and sweat and work—and became an NBA HOFer and a ‘Dream Team’’ stalwart wills himself into seizing the stagnant program of his Alma Mater and revives it to recapture its Glory Days...and more.
.

Thanks Chicago, Bama, Monte and others

For me, perhaps others...
It’s a difficult time and a puzzling crossroads and some of us are not in one canoe or the other, going up or down stream (such as the so called “old”/young, in favor or not of Chris Mullin remaining our leader).

Some hopefully only a few imo have an evil or disruptive intent and need-neither facts not fairness to
Post what they do.

I sense most of us “come in peace” and just want St. John’s to do well in
all it’s endeavors not just B-ball. Most too respect the divergence of opinion amongst we posters.

I have no simple solutions ( my fellow Americans and countrymen/women lol) or snake oil cures. There is sadness now. And frustration. I am sad. This is unpleasant.

But I do have hope and patience AND I very much am buoyed by the hiring of Mike Cragg. I can only surmise that he took this job with his eyes opened, with his goals and drive in gear ( success, progress ), with a clear understanding with the powers to be ( both in administration and in the $$$ donor pool ) with the distinct intention of bringing some of his Duke magic, aura and ability into the fray.

As with the bleak civil war years, I’m not giving up. We will have our Appomattox and one day the Final Four - or at least back to a time when St. John’s “makes some noise”!
Whether that’s with or without the current staff. Thanks for listening.

All the best.
Grant

Roger Rubin of Newsday made a good point.

Why would you make a statement and not include a positive quote or two from the Head Coach himself?

That's an odd way to reaffirm his status.

Is this indicating a stalemate? Haven't followed chess since Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky.

pretty obvious that the majority base feels he should step down. Maybe the legend Lou could reason with him and say"Chrissy, this aint for you big guy, walk away"
With all due respect, this website is not the majority of the base. You don't know what all the season ticket holders want. Neither do I. There are literally only 50, maybe 75 people that post in this board.

All St John's fans that I know, and none of them post,
none want mullin gone.
Pretty close to dead on. I'm not saying anyone is happy with how the season ended, but basketball fundraising is at an all time high, ticket sales are at a 27 year high, and we made the dance. You don't fire a guy and start over on that. My take is that Bobby G. Is squarely in Mullin's corner, hence the Cragg confidence.

And yes, some of the loudest negative voices on here don't reflect the season ticket holders in the aggregate. The mistake of the mob is to think their loud voices is the way everyone thinks. That mentality is why despite all prognostications Hillary isn't queen today.

And if those fans are content with losing, horrible coaching, no recruiting by the head coach and the weakest staff in D1 ball assembled by Mullin himself, that’s what we will get. Cheers to continuing to ride the bottom of the league. We are... a dumpster fire...

Insofar as chris' contract, the school wanted him, and in order to get him I'm pretty certain he'd want 6 years, like just about every coach gets. If there are no out clauses, it's not his fault.

The fact that so many of you are whining here points to relevancy. I don't think BC even has a basketball fan base. Students are admitted free with a $200 all sport pass and except for Duke, unc or Syracuse games, stay home, a few hundred feet from the arena.

Guarantee you if Mullin was fired today, athletic dept giving would decline.

Re: the President being squarely in Chris’ corner, could one assume that he nonetheless supported Cragg’s decision to not extend his contract, which appears likely?

What matters more from a business sense, the fans who buy tickets and donate, and both are at 27 year high and all time high, or those unhappy with results watching on TV?

I'm not even taking the position that I'm supporting one position or the other. I will say though, that its fruitless to demand anything when you are not empowered to do so. Whatever will be is out of our hands. Buy tickets or not, donate or not, those are the choices we have.

There is something great about attending games, win or lose. The section 114 gang knows that, and even if I can get a seat back, I love the game from Rockaway in my section. I really like the r-w gang too.

Don't think it's a substitute for winning. It isn't. Everyone wants to win. It's just disconcerting how our fans carry on

We bitched at most of the Jarvis, Mahoney, Roberts, lavin, and now mullin years. The only certainty is changing your own perspective but I fear many here are happy miserable.

While Mullin definitely played a part in ticket sales, winning of course played an exponentially larger role. Tickets sales weren't great for Mullin's first 3 years, but skyrocketed this year after our 12-0 start and pre-season hype. I heard the school also made adjustments in how tickets were allocated.

If the team stinks next year, then ticket sales may be at an all time low under Mullin.

Overall, it's tough to say how much we can attribute ticket sales this year to Mullin being coach, but one thing we know for sure is that the team needs to be good in order to sell tickets. Mullin alone isn't enough to sell tickets and the question is whether he's the right person to create a winning culture.

I agree Mullin should not be fired, however he should not be extended. I feel the best thing for everyone would be for him to step down on his own while still supporting the school/new coach going forward. The worst case scenario would be for Mullin to come back, lose and then get fired in a nasty breakup. That'd divide the fan base and may cause some not to come back in the future.

Ahh, maybe there's a pawn, unseen, about to be made 'Queen' for 'one side or the other'?!?
All gotta laugh and lighten up. It's only Sunday.
Ain't nothin' gonna go down until Tuesday the earliest.
We need a new Champion to crown first!

I am a long time season ticket holder. '85 grad. Mullin is my all time favorite SJU and overall college player. I was very happy when he became coach. I thought he would outwork everyone. I figured with the Slice separation after year 1 that meant he would always look to improve the staff. Both have not happened.
As we all know, we won 21 games due to the first twelve games and who we scheduled. A 9-13 record after that says a lot. It's not just those on this board criticizing how we played. My friends from other schools all said we looked disorganized with no real plays. Our defense was spotty and our rebounding philosophy especially on offense was dubious. Watching this tournament once again shows how inept we are. We wasted this team's talent.
To have St Jean as the "X and O" guy was asking too much of him. Matt being the only true recruiter is insane.
If Chris does not want to change, they have to buy him out as he's a lame duck. If he does agree to change then, as all most all of the board has said ,we need an "X and O" guy and a recruiter(High School kids as well as Transfers). For God's sake we are NYC's team who will be playing more games in the Garden that definitely helps with kids. I hope Chris stays and changes the staff as that would be the best thing for continuity. However my gut feels he's way too stubborn so this will be an ugly year coming up.

And why not bitch if the coach isn't good, are we supposed to be happy losers?
Screw that. I'd rather a miserable loser then a happy loser 100%, atleast as a miserable loser you show you care?

Just wanted to bring this up for comparison because it was also year 4. Lots of speculation in 2008 that Roberts was in trouble. Before season ended SJU announced that not only was Roberts was coming back for following season but that he was getting an extension to make it clear to recruits and others there was no issue. That sent a clear signal unless a scandal happened Roberts was getting 2 more years minimum before they re-evaluated him. Notice in addition to the extension that both AD and President made clear what their direction was.

Luv your avatar btw, boss!
'They' may not do what they 'should' do.
This week will tell us how it'll go down:
Chris or no Chris;
Chris with a changed Staff, or Chris the way he has been...?
The future is already written.
We'l have to wait to catch it on the news.
Lol.

Actually, this could be the most astute observation of the weekend.
In my stunned disbelief at the news y'day of Cragg's 'endorsement' of Chris following the scores of rumors, I 'looked' for a reaffirmation of sorts from Mullin about next year, his team, etc.
But then forgot it as the thread whined on about 1 or 2 ACs, Mitch or no Mitch, on and on.
Very very inner-resting.

Different President
Different Athletic
Different Board of Directors.
.... however, If the $ becomes available then Mullin will exit.
