Cragg provides Mullin with show of support

At this point idc whether Mullin is staying or going. What I do care about is that we have no one to replace our only recruiter a week later he left. We have lost our PG for next year. We need someone on the job asap trying to grab someone. It's ridiculous. Either get rid of Mullin or get this coaching staff bs together.
If Mullin survives this dead man walking scenario the first thing he has to do is prove he can re-recruit his point guard just as Lavin had to do with Jakarr Sampson. The second thing is to make the staff changes expected by common sense.
Finally, he can move his wife back to NYC and ask her to disengage from commenting on her Twitter account about recruiting from the Bay area.
If this President refused to buy out Slice he doesn't seem inclined to add any beans to the pot for Mullin. HE is the biggest setback for this basketball program. He and the Board of trustees have basically settled on seeing St. John's play in the bottom half of the Big East and fans and donors will likely respond accordingly. Perhaps this is as good as it is going to get.
So pissed that we are losing the PG. Shows lack of commitment to what is a full time 50 week a year job. For most coaches it’s a passion.
Matt doesn't coach he recruits. Mullin, Mitch and GSJ do neither so hence a recruit decommits from a coaching staff disconnected from the recruiting. Can't think of any other program in the conference in this predicament. I don't know if what is being said is true regarding Cragg offering Mullin a way out of the job but if true it doesn't bode well for Mullin or the program. That would plant doubts in recruits and potential assistant coaches. I can't see this ending well.
So, according to you, there was absolutely no coaching at all, by any coaches.

That's a bit over the top, even for you.

But, by all means continue to spew the venom, if it makes you feel better.

Matt may have recruited transfers well, but was just about the most specialized assistant in college basketball. To tag him with the title assistant is generous. He couldn't coach even if he tried, which he didn't. Ron linfonte was more valuable on the bench.
He wasn't perfect and you can say what you want. But, he was the hardest working member of our staff. You could also easily make the case that he was the most impactful.
But he wasn't a coach
Again, you can say what you want. Me.......I say thank God he was out there working.
I dont think any of us really know for certain how good he was. Except to say the biggest problem this season was short bench and lack of height. If recruiting was his ONLY job, isn't some of that on him?

Correct. He was a broker and closer. He had next to zero oversight by Mullin however and it may bite us on the ass in finding a replacement who values teamwork.
No way an assistant is ever the closer. That may be the problem, i.e. lack of a closer, but Matt wasnt closing either that or the guys who came here were idiots because Matt didnt coach them

Mullin appears to be a much better contract negotiator than basketball coach. He requires a four million dollar payoff to leave ( he learned watching Slice) or a multi million dollar extension in order to let recruits know he will still be at SJU for their whole careers. A more pressing problem might be that SJU has no one recruiting but no one seems to care about that.
Two and a half weeks after the end of SJU's season with many coaches already terminated , prospective coaches being interviewed , many players announcing they are transferring and being recruited SJU releases a recruit from his letter of intent because he wonders what is going on, loses its only recruiter and tells Mullin the university is one hundred per cent behind him. Isn't there something wrong somewhere?

As soon as Hoiberg got fired by the bulls, mullin and cragg should have been looking at replacement options. Hopefully they did, and an announcement is imminent. And then another.

Any insiders want to speculate on:

1. Odds Mullin resigns
2. Odds Mullin returns with 1 new AC (Matt's replacement)
3. Odds Mullin returns with 2-3 new ACs

The 3 numbers will equal 100%. I'd say (pure guess):
1. 50%
2. 20%
3. 30%

Agree. Think the fact that we haven’t announced means the CM-MC discussions may not be over.

Unfortunately in this case that was the case. Supposedly Mullin has never even met Cam. Who closed? Cam wasn't coming to play for Matt but he clearly had no relationship with Mullin. This wasn't the only recruit to commit without Mullin's involvement. A assistant gets a recruit interested to play for a coach. The coach closes. Not happening here.

Let's be clear here, none, zero, nada of the "coaches" ever coached before being rewarded with guaranteed contracts for their inexperience. Heck, Lavin was a head coach. Dunlap was a head coach. Jim Whitesell was a head coach. Tony Chiles was a head coach.
I don't subscribe to the theory that just because the three mentioned were learning on the job at full salary for experienced coaches that it makes them " competent" coaches.
The vast majority of fans and basketball people have rated out staff at the very bottom of the conference. They are not spewing venom but looking at a staff that has managed to win only 1 out of every 4 Big East games. That is as close to abject coaching failure that a staff can come. Certainly never came close to the staffing level of previous coaching staffs at St. John's.
Finally, the only reason Chris Mullin is still coach is $$$. That is on the President as I have stated numerous times. Think of this......no extension, Mullin insists on his payout that the President refuses to fund and given that poisoned relationship the program will suffer a worse fate than the fans deserve. Every loss will be magnified and any losing streak will bring calls for immediate dismissal. No impact recruits will sign on for that situation. In the end if you can't recruit you are finished. Tell us what you see.

How is any of this a bargaining chip? I don't see it. Maybe Cragg was told "no buyout", so he might as well say he supports Mullin. How does anyone see this as anything else? What am I missing?

The only way to fix things without firing Mullin is to clean house house administratively. Get Bobby and Oliva out. They are responsible for awarding ironclad contracts that matched the $ value of the previous coaching staff. All the talk about lack of funds is clearly on the President who is the chief fund raiser. Mullin could have been a major fund raiser but according to some he is less adept at that than recruiting and coaching. His communication skills are underwhelming and he now has no problem holding dear alma mater with a gun to the head.

Thanks for that, Beast. Something positive to hope for, which while not ideal, would ‘stabilize’ trends imo and placate most of the Board.
Let’s hope.

Again, not an insider but the info I got that I
referenced earlier that runs counter to the rumors we’ve all heard is that a certain assistant coach has been in communication about taking an assistant coaching job here. I know this to be 100% true.

This was prior to the Mullin-Cragg meetings so it was possible for that to be discussed and then all of that madness to unfold. I think everyone just got bad intell on this.

Cragg comes out looking awful if a move is not imminent. That show of support should have been released Tuesday the latest.

Good post, Marillac. Helpful, thanks. We need 2 new ACs though, or Mitch in super-drive as a recruiter.
Lol.
