Well, you and others better get over all the Jenkins second guessing because he is the best we have at his position to date. No one else thus far has shown much better. The young Simeon is too error prone. Davis is injured. If it's Daniss Jenkins not following the coaches calls, I would agree, but I think he has Pitino's blessing to be an attacking guard. I would rather see more pick n rolls, better offensive movement by other players to get in position to get free, etc. but in THIS particular game BC smartly took our players out of their comfort zone and they adeptly played rope a dope with Soriano. How else do you explain Quiten Post having NINE ASSISTS?
St . John's had the better team. BC had the better prepared players.
Coaching gets a C- imo.
St. John’s has arguably the best post scorer in the conference. We are a ++ offensive rebounding team. Dingle and Alleyne are + shooters. Luis is either a + or ++ scorer from the wing. Those are the weapons we have and if we use them, we could win.

Pitino will have to abandon his preference to play with pace for this year. He needs to get the ball out of Jenkins’ hands and run the offense inside-out.

A big reason why I always rank Pitino over Coach K is because I thought K was too stubborn for his own good and lost games that could have been wins because of it.

I hope to not view Pitino in the same light.

Great to finally meet you and Panther, Beast, you are both examples of everything that is great about SJU fans and this board. I am now 0 for my last 3 attending SJU games in person - yesterday, the Marquette slaughter in the quarterfinals of the 2019 BET and Coach K's 1,000th victory over us in 2015 (I think it was 2015). I guess the moral of that story is I need to watch from home. Having said that, my family and I totally enjoyed the experience if not our team's play and the result.
I feel your pain. I have a similar experience recently at Mets games. Just keep coming, we are a better crowd with you in the building.

There are so many terrific examples of great fans on here that it's a great compliment that you mention me. Starting with Paul, who has been too ill to enjoy this anticipated renaissance of SJU bball, Paultzman who posts breaking news simultaneous to news outlets, Mjmaher who is the Dean of Relationships here, Redmannorth who is of a different faith but I regard his piety as much as anyone in my faith, Monte who is like an Italian brother I'd argue with frequently butnwho wouldnbe the first to have your back in a fight, and so many many others that I could write all day.

This board has taken on a great tone because of the people who have consistently emphasized the relationships we have with each other.

Now if we can just bang this season out to get called on Selection Sunday. I wasn't certain before the season and not certain now. I do know every game has been a must see event.

That was Dayton all over again. Not a great day to say the least and a lot to work on. We better hope Luis can get and stay healthy.

Outside of Carmine who was also Avery Patterson’s only fan, most of us are confused with the over reliance of Jenkins. But since I have no doubt Pitino is smarter than most of us, let’s look at the possible reason for the Jenkins love.

1. Rick is the most loyal person on the planet. But judging by the other Iona players, I think we could rule this out.

2. Jenkins has a hot mom. Now I have seen this be a thing in the travel baseball circuit. Hey why is that kid playing second? Take a look at his mom. I also believe that is why the Jets drafted Zach Wilson.

3. Rick seemingly has been down on Dingle from the jump and at this point he is not wrong. Also he sees what all of us see besides Marillac in regards to Wilcher.

I'm in a very bad place because I agree with most of Marillac's points on Jenkins, but also think Jenkins is by far our best guard right now.

Dingle had a nice game against Utah. Outside of that, it's not really accurate to say that we've seen this year a guy who is one of the best scorer's in the country and should have the ball in his hands. His shooting numbers (FG and 3pt) aren't even that far off from last year! That's scary to me. His FT is down 20% which tells me there's something going on here beyond the physical.

Either way, we're now in December and almost done with the OOC. It's simply unfair to put Dingle on a pedestal he hasn't earned. Jenkins is at least going after it and playing with intensity. There were stretches where Dingle was the primary ball handler and the team wasn't any better.

No. Basketball has evolved to be 4 guys handling and creating. Very few teams rely on one player like we do…and our one guy is a SF that thinks he’s a true PG.

It’s a chicken and egg argument here. What came first? Is Jenkins and his complete lack of conscience the answer to nobody having any confidence or is his lack of a conscience and domination of the ball the reason nobody else feels confident?

You know where I land. This team needs to share the ball and pick spots and find favorable matchups. You can’t live and die with an A-10 talent dictating everything.

The only hope left is that Luis gets the ball out of Jenkins hands or his teammates just say enough of this sh*t man. You can’t get 15 shots whenever you want and force every meaningful dribble and pass. You aren’t Marcus Hatten and it was even annoying when Hatten did it.
I don’t think he has a lack of conscience as he is not a chucker and we haven’t seen four guys creating and handling. Maybe just maybe that’s because the coach know’s that he doesn’t have that? He will be fine. We need Dingle to be what he was supposed to be and Wilcher to improve.

SJU85, if Dingle is going to be what we expect him to be then we have to get him open looks. We have to run plays for him where he receives the ball in good position to shoot. Or, at least have Jenkins drive , draw the defense and kick it out to our shooters. I haven’t seen enough of that from Jenkins or our half court offense in general.

Agree we need run plays for Dingle! Don’t think it would have mad much of a difference for this game. We gave away to many layups. Have to defend to strong side dribble better so our guards to get blown by all the time.

100% Rick is too loyal to Jenkins. Here is the best explanation I can relate to from personal experience. I played high school football for the #2 ranked NY program in the Max Preps era. My wishbone backfield alone had me play at St. John’s, our QB play at Army, another RB play at James Madison (and be an all American wrestler there), a RB play at Penn State after breaking Curtis Enis’ rushing record in prep school, a backup RB start at Stony Brook, and a kid who got moved to guard start at FB at Albany. We were absolutely loaded in summary but it didn’t feel that way to me because we just all grew up together and I never realized until way after that we never lost a wrestling meet or football game from 2nd grade on or how odd it was that schools like Blair Academy would travel from NJ to wrestle us in a dual meet. We were a AA school with over 3,000 students.

I then went to coach some AWFUL small class C school for a year that had like 400 students. I started seeing some of these kids as equal to who I played with so I scheduled a good class B team that was on the cusp of class A size wise for a scrimmage. They beat the absolute hell out of us. I had 6 kids leave in an ambulance.

Prior to the game I was 100% convinced 4-5 kids from that team could have started for my old high school. They did everything I asked…were great kids, but there are levels to this sh*t. I went to watch my old school win the state championship later that season and I honestly couldn’t believe I thought my scrubs could ever play with those monsters.

I think that’s what is happening with Pitino and Jenkins. He loved the kid at Iona where he was superior to MAAC level guys and he’s so good in practice and off the court. He said at a presser last year Jenkins could have started for his Louisville teams!

That’s blind loyalty. I was so bad with that as a coach, I asked every friend I had to give me their opinions on my players after the games…even asked my mom and girlfriend. Sometimes you are too close to it as a coach.

I have tried to not think too much about Posh, as what's done is done. But given our glaring lack of defensive ability, it's becoming harder and harder. The guy won Big East Defensive Player of the Year, he gave 1000% on the court. Painful to see him at Butler.
like i said enough already. Doesnt matter.

The definitive reality here as has been expressed time and again , was Pitino wanted and expected his Backcourt to be Jenkins and Clayton .

It had to be a big disappointment to RP that Clayton didn’t transfer here to play with Jenkins . That duo had Court Chemistry at Iona that doesn’t exist here .

I can’t believe the criticism being put forth so intensely on Jenkins . Theirs is no evidence that RP has anything less than full confidence in Daniss . So , if your pissing on Jenkins , your pissing on Rick .

Let’s be real for a minute . Have either Dingle or Ledlum lived up to expectations to be impact players here as they were in the Ivy League ? The answer to that is No. Not so far .

Pitino has as much said in his Presser that somebody might have over sold the goods on these 2 players . Truth be known , they are great young men , decent BB players but , are short in some of the abilities that Pitino needs on his teams . They are not fast , nor quick , nor up to now , only average shooters with below expectations in scoring .

So , to be so critical of Jenkins , why not take up that mantle with Rick himself ? Not bury Jenkins . I’ m sure RP would enjoy the dialogue with those dumping on Jenkins . Doubt you would get anything less than a complete endorsement of Jenkins . And , a scathing look from Rick .

FYI I'll be recording the reaction podcast tonight. I usually record the day after, but I took a day to stew and get my thoughts together. Everyone is pissed off, I get it. I am too. That wasn't a game SJU was "supposed" to lose. But I was really curious when I rewatched the 2nd half to see how the defense was "so bad." And honestly, it's not "bad defense" in the sense of not closing out on guys and it's definitely not a lack of effort or buying into defense. They put hands in BC's face, they didn't give up hardly ANY wide open shots. There is a major perimeter speed issue that's causing the "bad defense" and then there is an issue with being out of position on switches.

There's more and I'll try to elaborate on it, probably solo tonight, but I'll also preface by saying season aint over yet. Plenty of ground to make up and PLENTY of good faith and will to make up...expectations of the roster and coach have caused some crazy takes since this weekend. It's gonna be a long week but everyone does need to chill a little. Hope you guys listen to the episode when it comes out, I'll do my best to make my thoughts entertaining.
