He got beat seemingly every defensive possession. He doesn’t belong at this level on defense.

The sobering reality after the Michigan game was that we just don’t have the physical talent on.
defense. I expected this team to take a long time to gel, but there is only so much a coach can do when you lack talent.
I thought Pitino was noted for coaching UP his players.

Fair and thanks for listening. With a new guest on I didn’t want to go all fire and brimstone. I believe I did mention zone. And I don’t think I put the loss on the players or the coach specifically. It was a bit of both plus a bit of another team playing well and trying to win.

And generally, I am not one to rip a coach and play guessing games after the fact. For all we know zone would have yielded just as many open looks. If this defensive approach keeps up deep into conference play then it will be much more worthy of discussion.

Do I think Pitino coached a great game yesterday, no! But I also know if 2 of their shots don’t drop and two of ours do, almost nobody would even mention the coaching.

Personally I don’t think coach Pitino needs our suggestions (but I think we all should give them on here) and I hope none of us are naive enough to think just because we thought of it in our own heads, and then we see coach Pitino try it, (like zuby and Soriano together for instance) that he wasn’t already thinking of it himself.

I never thought you should rip coach Pitino at all. But bringing up that a zone may have been an alternative solution to stopping penetration, since our guards were unable to do so, may have been an option. And you’re right, Coach Pitino doesn’t need our suggestions, he’s Coach Pitino.

Is this really true, though? I ask sincerely as I don't know the facts.
Well known among some posters here, myself included, that Pitino offered Alexander the chance to work out for/with him and he turned it down because he had plans to go to AC.

Kran , in addition to the team yesterday , did you notice a few of our best posters seemed to have slipped back into poor Paragraphing .? We have grown lenient this season . You have over looked many of these transgressions . Me too .
I think it’s affected the team’s performance .

Time to crack the whip . For RP too !

I think the reason we may have an up and down year has less to do with the fact that we have a lot of new guys, and more to do with the fact that we may not have enough high level/game ready talent. If Zuby and Wilcher can take a big step forward this season, that could change. But that's a big "if". Also, if Luis gets healthy and contributes as many expect he will, that could change.
Much like prior teams, we have some solid ballplayers. But ballplayers that may be better suited for roles 6-8 in the Big East(this ain't the Ivys), not roles 2-5.
I agree. Occam's razor: to get where we all desperately want to be, we need better players. Most posts can be distilled to this.

The absence of dedication/concentration on defense from veteran players on the team surprises me. Stopping the ball yesterday was non existent and so much reaching in resulted in blow byes. That obviously must be driving RP crazy. Yielding a ton of points v BC clearly was caused by an abundance of point blank shots & layups. One of this shots made diagrams must show a ton of red circles proximate to hoop.

Fixable, we’ll see. Hopefully the players will embrace the immediate need to buy into it as BE schedule awaits w no mercy if these defensive habits & lapses persist.

Well, that's crazy if it's true that Posh just blew him off. Context would be helpful- eg, was it a special occasion planned well in advance and Pitino wouldn't be flexible? Or did Posh just blow him off? Hard to believe the latter, but I'm not saying it isn't true.

Great to finally meet you and Panther, Beast, you are both examples of everything that is great about SJU fans and this board. I am now 0 for my last 3 attending SJU games in person - yesterday, the Marquette slaughter in the quarterfinals of the 2019 BET and Coach K's 1,000th victory over us in 2015 (I think it was 2015). I guess the moral of that story is I need to watch from home. Having said that, my family and I totally enjoyed the experience if not our team's play and the result.
NC Johnnie , stay Home ! Do not venture North of Mason Dixon Line to attend games . RP has your email and phone and is considering a suspension .

Seriously , it’s great to see games in person . TV loses a lot of the fanfare and excitement .

Glad you enjoyed meeting the other guys at the game .

Meanwhile Clemson is still unbeaten here in SC . Watch out .

Colorado must be a sleeper team . They destroyed Miami .

The 2 announcers yesterday sounded like they wished they were elsewhere . They had little interests in giving a proper play by play .

They seemed more interested in their back and forth banter that had nothing to do with the game . It was awful

Agree with the note that the announcers were terrible yesterday.

Also - Seems like Barclays is not somewhere we want to play. Felt like an away game and the BC fans were louder than ours.

Carnesecca Arena is very underwhelming to say the least, but its the only place that feels like an honest home court advantage. Even at MSG, when we're playing UCON, Nova, etc. we're typically outnumbered. When MSG is rocking and the fans are behind the Johnies, that can't be beat, but more often than not its louder for our opponents, which I can't stand considering it should be a "home" game.

Cory Alexander obviously was not a fan of Coach C.
He's an egotistical idiot who loves to put his fellow announcer down while building his fragile ego up. In his myopic self-centered little world he couldn't conceive that just maybe Lou didn't give him more time because there were better players ahead of him.

I think that needs to be reiterated. The guy receives so much hate and analysis from some on this board you would think he did something personal to them. I surprised he doesn't get criticized for what he eats. He's not a pure point guard, so what. We've had non pure point guards before and some of whom are beloved (Hatten, Ponds, Hardy). Not saying he is as good as any of those three but you don't need a pure PG to win. Think of how it fell apart when he wasn't on the floor yesterday.

I am not surprised that we have three loses, figuring it was going to be a work in progress but I do agree sometimes you need to do something different and if it means switch up on defense from time to time because your preferred defense is not working, then do it.
Excellent post 85.

They got behind guys coming up court, especially when pressing, all game. Frustrating to watch, but this will improve.

I don’t think anything concerning building the roster was planned well in advance; that option was just not available. Context as far as I know was Alexander was on the “naughty list“ of Coach Macon’s roster breakdown to CRP. The only players on the “nice list” were Soriano and Traore. The criteria of the review was attitudinal in nature. To the best of my knowledge, some may know more, Pitino then met with each player and at least Alexander and Storr were given opportunities to stay. Alexander was offered to work out, which he turned down, Storr’s issue was NIL $ which were not enough from his perspective.

I don't think its fair to judge Barclays on that since the only games we've played there are not part of the season ticket package and were instead part of these boring "tournaments" or "showcases".

Give Barclays a regular home game part of the season ticket package in Big East play, and I guarantee it does not feel like an away or neutral game.

Carnesseca is a horrendous place to play. How many people come on this forum and complain about their back after a game? From the games I've gone to, I also don't see a huge influx of students that I think its worth the trade off.

I think anyone looking at last year's roster and wishing people were still on the team is missing the big picture. It wasn't necessarily about getting best talent available, it was also about implementing a culture change.
