Way too early to think this team can’t make the tournament. However, Jenkins does take bad shots, which overshadows the 8 assists and no turnovers. Not enough of Soriano for long stretches. Gotta get him the ball more. They looked disorganized on offense and a half step slow defensively in this game. Need Luis back. Need Zuby and Wilcher to be better. It’s going to be an up and down year with so many new guys. I just want to see consistent improvement.

Pitino, while little time, recruited a lot of seniors.. he expected to win this year.

Would we be better off next year if Pitino didn't recruit as many seniors and filled out with more guys like Luis & Taylor who would have this year to grow into Pitino's expectations and lead as Jr's & Seniors?

Good point RSNC. I think coach took best available talent but ideally, had he kept a few players like Jones, and a former recruit or two, and was able to find a few good underclassmen, his team in year two would seem to have more promise cause right now, year two is looking at best like another rebuilding year.

Jenkins had 8 assists and 0 turnovers. 0 turnovers and 8 assists. 8 to 0. 0 to 8. 8 - 0. 0 - 8. Eight/zero. Zero Eight!
I think that needs to be reiterated. The guy receives so much hate and analysis from some on this board you would think he did something personal to them. I surprised he doesn't get criticized for what he eats. He's not a pure point guard, so what. We've had non pure point guards before and some of whom are beloved (Hatten, Ponds, Hardy). Not saying he is as good as any of those three but you don't need a pure PG to win. Think of how it fell apart when he wasn't on the floor yesterday.

I am not surprised that we have three loses, figuring it was going to be a work in progress but I do agree sometimes you need to do something different and if it means switch up on defense from time to time because your preferred defense is not working, then do it.

pitino knows defense is an issue.

the question now is, will he make adjustments or keep pounding at this way-of-playing?

i personally think we need to call off the press -- or at least cut back considerably. our guys are caught off position way too often.

there's nothing good that can come from Soriano picking up full court.

That may be true but his younger players, especially Wilcher who was beat every time he guarded someone, didn’t fare much better either. Concerning.
Yeah, ‘“concerning”; Wilcher played all of 6 minutes and got “beat every time” he guarded someone. Nonsense……
Wilcher averages 10 minutes a game, Dunlap, 8.
Breaking it down further, Witcher has appeared in all 9 games, 83 minutes; 44 of those minutes in the blowouts of Sacred Heart, Holy Cross and Stony Brook. So in the other 6 competitive games he averages 6.5 minutes.
Dunlap has played in 7 games for 54 minutes, 32 of which were in the blowouts so he averages 5.5 in the 4 competitive games he appeared in.
The point is they are doing nothing more than getting their feet wet. The coaches getting a little tape to teach from. Whether that changes obviously depends on how the season goes I suspect. But to expect to get any kind of a read on what kind of players they will be with those minutes is wasted effort IMO. They are both used to playing alpha roles and suddenly coming off the bench is a huge adjustment and is very, very tough. But neither are remotely a problem anywhere near the top of the list, which really is a list of one…this team doesn’t guard!!

I think the reason we may have an up and down year has less to do with the fact that we have a lot of new guys, and more to do with the fact that we may not have enough high level/game ready talent. If Zuby and Wilcher can take a big step forward this season, that could change. But that's a big "if". Also, if Luis gets healthy and contributes as many expect he will, that could change.
Much like prior teams, we have some solid ballplayers. But ballplayers that may be better suited for roles 6-8 in the Big East(this ain't the Ivys), not roles 2-5.

That was Dayton all over again. Not a great day to say the least and a lot to work on. We better hope Luis can get and stay healthy.

Pat, I listen to your post game comments regularly but this time I feel that you and co hosts missed the boat. Sure , as you stated the defense wasn’t good but what did the staff do about it? When BC penetrated at will time and time again and was either fouled or scored, could Pitino have thrown in some zone to stop the penetration? Could the bigs have been told to sag off and look to help more?

Hey , I get it, Pitino is a HOF coach and it’s tough to question his in game coaching, but as a commentator and game analyzer, don’t you owe it to the fan base to bring up all possible scenarios for the games outcome and in this case, defensive issues regardless of how uncomfortable it may be? Is the loss always only on the players? Please consider this for future podcasts.

The team has to figure out how to play when Jenkins isn’t on the court because he dominates every single possession when he is. Every shot and pass is dictated by him and he’s simply nowhere near good enough to be responsible for that % of our offense.

It would be slightly annoying if Allen Iverson did that, but it’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen in college basketball that an A-10 caliber wing is doing it as a PG in the Big East.

Explain how the kid hasn’t attempted a single FT in 6 games this season? How is that even possible for someone has the ball in their hands 90% of the time?! If he actually stopped shooting and driving, other players would have a chance to build chemistry and find their roles.

He also can’t defend anyone.

I was seeing this much more a few weeks back, but I felt that this was because nobody was stepping up as a pt scorer and DJ felt the gap there. Since then I personally think he's been doing a better job. Not to mention, so far he's been pretty damn good at controlling the ball and not giving up turnovers. My biggest criticism right now is the threes. His shot selection from range can be a momentum killer and he's not a good enough shooter to take the shots he takes. He's had some incredible passes to Joel though and is looking for him. I've noticed their chemistry is continuing to build.

Man - what a luxury it is to have a big guy that can catch a pass and dunks everything. Been screaming at the TV asking for our bigs to just catch a damn pass for like 20 years now. Have I mentioned that Joel's the man?

Is Jenkins really a point guard
We really don’t have one.
Did anyone see the Xavier/ Cal game?
Posh Alexander was good and has been for
Xavier so far.
Pitino blew it by not keeping him!
Posh plays for Butler

Fair and thanks for listening. With a new guest on I didn’t want to go all fire and brimstone. I believe I did mention zone. And I don’t think I put the loss on the players or the coach specifically. It was a bit of both plus a bit of another team playing well and trying to win.

And generally, I am not one to rip a coach and play guessing games after the fact. For all we know zone would have yielded just as many open looks. If this defensive approach keeps up deep into conference play then it will be much more worthy of discussion.

Do I think Pitino coached a great game yesterday, no! But I also know if 2 of their shots don’t drop and two of ours do, almost nobody would even mention the coaching.

Personally I don’t think coach Pitino needs our suggestions (but I think we all should give them on here) and I hope none of us are naive enough to think just because we thought of it in our own heads, and then we see coach Pitino try it, (like zuby and Soriano together for instance) that he wasn’t already thinking of it himself.

I haven't read this thread so I'm probably going to repeat what's been posted. From a defensive point of view it was Dayton deja vu. Way too many open looks and uncontested drives to the hoop for bc. Our turnovers and horrid outside shooting let us down.

Right now, outside of Joel, I don't have a lot of confidence in the shot and decision making of the team. There is no consistency---yet.

Those announcers were horrible. They acted like two guys in a bar taking verbal potshots at each other when they weren't discussing Jay Z. It almost made me wish for Dickie Simpkins. Nah, now I've gone way too far, nothing is worse than Simpkins. o_O

I was at the game. We missed a TON of good, open looks. I think we were 2-17 from three before Dingle and Alleyne hit a couple when the game was over. We win if a few more of those open looks go in. That being said, when you're having an off shooting night you have to play great on the defensive end. Dingle and Jenkins are simply terrible on defense. They are going to struggle guarding quick guards all season like Dug McDaniel and Jaeden Zackery. We need to start playing some zone until our backcourt defense improves.

Season is far from over. We are going to get better, and we are going to pull a few upsets against the top half of the Big East.

Frustrating loss tonight. No doubt about it.

A few thoughts
1) Jenkins gets WAY too much hate here. I don’t know what it is. When he was not on the court tonight it was a MONUMENTAL difference. The team had no direction. Yes, he has holes. He should not be shooting step back threes. The worst case scenario is he hits 1 and starts thinking that’s his game. That said, he made some very heady defensive plays today and great passes. He’s gotta stay out of foul trouble.
2) Time to take a serious look at Dingle being a starter. He’s way too much of a defensive liability to not be putting up 18 a game and 40%+ from 3. He’s slow on D and will get smoked by BE guards. He’s not aggressive enough on offense. Time for him to put up or shut up.
3) Dunlap and Wilcher looked completely overmatched during their floor time. They gotta get it together quick. They didn’t earn any PT. That said, Dingle cannot be the PG. So with Dannis not on the floor, Wilcher HAS to be ready to spell him some minutes. I really hope to see that development. Rooting for our frosh’s.
4) Joel my fav Johhnie in a very very long time. Agree he’s the only difference maker right now offensively.
5) Ledlum has really stepped up since the start of the season. His game around the rim has greatly improved. That said, he’s still too slow of defense and him and dingle on the floor together make it tough to stay in man D.
6) I continue to like Glenn Taylor’s consistency and shot selection. He does a lot without the ball.
7) hoping RJ Luis comes back soon. He looked amazing against Sacred Heart but they were clearly not a great basketball team. I hope we don’t pressure him into the next great hype just because we need a savior. Let him work his way in, lots of talent there.
8) Rick has WON more college basketball games than most of us have watched. Just relax and let him do his thing please. I promise you, you don’t know more about coaching basketball than Rick Pitino.

Hoping the season continues to improve and looking forward to watching some fun basketball.
This +100000.

The ESPN announcers are consistently awful. For selfish reasons I’m really hoping the Big East renews with Fox.

Who's handling the ball under pressure? None of the three you mentioned are ball handling guards.
You're right; overreaction on my part, but as soon as Daniss took that unnecessary step back 3 early in the shot clock everything turned. I'm sure after this practices they'll be ready to correct a lot of yesterday's mistake against the Rams Saturday.
