It’s not that we give up too easy or enjoy being pessimistic Dink. I’ve been a fan of the program since 1979 and I donate to this site and I donate to Storm Marketing. So, I’m not giving up on anything but I just think that there are some of us who are just completely exhausted from the last 20+ years of futility that this program has gone through. That was all supposed to change once Pitino got here. I don’t think I or anyone else is looking for a Final Four in year one. What we are looking for though is improvement every game and we’re not seeing it many aspects. The product that we are seeing so far this year is only marginally better than what we’ve seen in years past. It’s like every other year. The moment you think there’s something positive it’s gone. It’s like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown every time he goes to kick it and he falls on his ass. I don’t think having aspirations of making the tournament this year was asking too much. Hopefully it still happens but it’s a steep uphill climb now.
Agree for the most part MG except the 20 plus years being a lifetime is laughable to some of us older fans.
I do think Rick needs to point the finger backward once in a while though

Well, at least Rick took some blame tonight saying it was partially staff's fault for recruiting offensive players, and thinking they could teach older players defense.

Rare guest appearance observations:

1. The concerns with hiring a 71 year old coach who hasn't coached at the high D1 level in 8 years were (a) could he adapt to NIL and the portal; (b) had the game changed too much for him; (c) would be be too set in his ways to adjust if needed.

There are no concerns about (a), (b) is probably fine, but (c) remains a concern. If you went to or watched the Michigan game it was evident that the defense needed to change. It didn't. Same thing vs BC, that defense (at least with these player) wasn't gonna work. Again, no adjustment. Even if you aren't a zone team, if you can't stop the ball, then make the adjustment and play zone.

We probably don't beat Michigan even with some defensive flexibility, but today is 100% on the coach refusing to make adjustments. If your defense gives up 82 a game and you can't change the players ... Maybe you need to adjust your defense.

2. The player personnel problems with this team are obvious. Jenkins is not a PG. Wilcher has a high ceiling, but isn't ready. It's hard to win without a PG.

I'm not sure why Pitino preferred Ledlum over Slazinski - and I LOVE Ledlum. But he does not have the length or shooting ability that Slazinski does, and he has an athleticism deficit at this level. Very productive, and probably my favorite on the team after Soriano. But his limitations take away as much as his effort gives you against high level competition (which BC is not).

Luis is a difference maker, but there is no depth in the frontcourt and no obvious development of Brady Dunlap. Conway didn't get a minute today in a game he might have helped you. I guess it's wait for Luis to come back and hope that masks the other problems?

3. Setting aside that this year is shaping up to be a little north of .500, there is some cause for concern about next year. This team will lose 4 out of 5 starters and its most reliable 6th man in Alleyne.

IMO Jenkins will be no great loss if Wilcher stays and develops. Another scoring guard can probably be found to replace Dingle. But another Soriano is not going to be so easy to find, and he is really the only difference maker on this team right now.

IF (big if) you can keep Luis, Taylor, Wilcher and Ejafor then you have 4/5 of a starting rotation. But your bench is a couple of freshmen, Traore, maybe Dunlap, and whoever gets added via the portal. Those portal adds had better include a VERY good big man and some shooting.

And even in that best-case scenario, it's going to be tough to get two freshmen, a big, and a shooter up to speed in the Pitino system.

4. Bottom line is this may be a 3 year project before SJU hits pay dirt - at which point Pitino will be 74 years old. Fingers crossed, but there is some cause for concern here that this may not be an overnight success or even a near-term success. The good news is that (unlike some of our past hires) it will definitely not be a dumpster fire either. Just saying it was probably a good idea to pump the brakes a bit going in and it still is.

5. Hope all is well with The Usual Suspects, and wishing all of the artist formerly known as Redmen.com a happy and healthy holiday season.

Not giving up Dink, but don't think it's likely based on what I've seen. Just don't think some of our issues are fixable. But if anyone can do it it's Rick, so we'll see.
Our defense won't be any better in 10 day, so X and UConn will light us up also, 0-2

Great to hear from you & spot on observations LM

Sorry but that is NOT happening! Without Jenkins this team would stink.
Dingle is a pure shooting guard and has poor court vision. Davis is injured and Wilcher is too prone to freshman turnovers with the ball in his hands.
The team already stinks and one of the main reasons is Jenkins.
Hindsight here, but Rick didn't make it the NCAAs in year 1 at Providence, Kentucky, or Louisville (I know Kentucky was on probation, but they were 14-14 his first season). To expect that to change here might have been folly, but we'll see.

It was folly, but that is to be expected on this site.

Lots of bball left, I am not at the same bball IQ as many on here but to me this team seems to not know each other or where their teammate will be on the floor. We have no pure point guard and our defense blows, like very bad. I saw too many open lay ups today. I would just play zone rest of season. We lost because of bad D today not offense. Our offense is actually fine and much better than any prior team in the last 5 years but this team's Defense is horrendous for high level D-1 play. But if I am thinking this then so must be RP the GOAT of all college coaches the past 20 years.

Great post. My only point of contention is that we should have no problem keeping Luis, Taylor and Ejiafor - anyone who has already transferred once would have to sit out if they transfer again - in that respect, we are much more likely to be able to keep them than Wilcher and Dunlap.

When your opening press conference states you only want to keep Soraino and Drissa then you are the reason Posh is no longer a Johnny.

Posh unfortunately, to quote CRP was a ‘round peg in a square hole’. (Which is weird in itself because it is usually the hole that is round).
I don't blame RP on Posh not being here. I think Posh had a chance to stay if he wanted to. He probably just did not want to fight for his starting position again and he was not wrong for leaving b/c as we can tell now RP is favoring certain players. Posh was a true PG but his shooting was terrible. I look at the PG we are using now and its almost a net effect of Zero to me.

No doubt about it the team did not play well today. I agree that our defense was the biggest culprit. Boston College was clearly quicker than we were and consistently beat us down the floor. Dingle was not very good and the team's outside shooting in general was very poor. Pitino will need to get this group to improve quite a bit in order for us to have a season that the fanbase can feel good about. Like last year's team, Joel is easily our best player. He will be tough to replace next year, so hopefully we can do something this year while he is still here. When Jenkins picked up his fourth foul we were pretty rudderless and he needed to come back in quickly to stop the bleeding. Our two Freshmen Simeon Wilcher and Brady Dunlap have a way to go before they will make any kind of an impact. The turnout of our fans was not particularly impressive. There were definitely more Colorado and Miami fans in the building than there were SJU fans.

The other games were pretty entertaining. Colorado was by far the best of the eight teams that played today. They totally outclassed nationally ranked Miami and Colorado's Tristan Da Silva looked like an NBA player with 22 points 10 rebounds and 9 assists (1 assist shy of a triple double). The rest of the Colorado team played very well too and if they continue to play like they did today then they will be a team you will absolutely hear more from this season

In the first game North Texas State lost to Fordham 60 to 59 on a thrilling game winning dunk with just about one tenth of a second left on the clock. In the finale Temple beat Albany 78 to 73.

Three of the four underdogs won their games outright and the fourth underdog Albany covered the spread.

Jenkins and Dingle can’t play together. It’s that simple. The only looks Dingle gets are from Taylor.

Ledlum never passes outside. He had guys open on the perimeter and chose to bully his way inside instead.

Soriano wasn’t missing and only got 12 shots some how?

I feel bad for Soriano and Taylor because they are the only ones trying to take good shots.

Jenkins came into the game shooting 18% from three against everyone besides Stony Brook and Sacred Heart and went 0-4. He also failed to get to the FT line at all for 6th game this season. That is such a bizarre stat to me.

We don’t manufacture any baskets. We do nothing for our shooters.

I told you guy after the Stony Brook game he looks physically overmatched. It seems pretty clear now. The Big East isn't Dartmouth and Brown every night

There is plenty to be critical of, but I personally did not see Ledlum as physically overmatched today. He finished with a double-double, had a bunch of tough offensive rebounds and several overpowering finishes inside the paint. He also kept us in the game for stretches of the first half. This kid is a good player.

Ugh, this is so depressing. I feel like we write these posts every four years. Still have a ton of belief that Pitino will turn things around, but this is disappointing. Also, recruiting is all about momentum and a bad season will make things more difficult.
Not depressing to me. We all knew the situation coming into this season with alm the new guys.

Yeah, I was really hoping that they could get it together quick, but that loos not t be the case.
The guys Rick got were to be oretty good shooters, but don't look that good to me.

Can they get it together before it's to late and then their only hope is winning the B.E. Tournament? No idea. They most likely will start conf play 0-2, Xavier is better then BC and Miller is a real good coach. 0-2 would be here we go again.

Next year they'll have more returning players, I'll be expecting alot more then this year.

Jenkins, Ledlum and Dingle are all senior. They will be gone next year. Today, Jenkins played for 26 minutes, Ledlum played for 37 minutes and Digle played for 33 minutes. We lost.

They are all from Mid-major program and look already tired and can't defence good enough for Major program. Pitino should give them much less playing time and give other young players much more time to play to have experience preparing for next year. Why does Pitino keep saying he is disappointing while he keep using Jenkins, Ledlum and Dingle most of playing times.
