Why announce this then, except to see who will contact him. I would day he is gone. His dad always chat a with Lovett so the idea of greener pastures has been alive and well all season

anything less than the core four 4 is debacle
Reality is on a team like Nova he'd be no more than a rotation player if that. 6 11 and no post game, got pushed around like a rag doll by Delgado, that is when he wasn't 20 feet from.basket. If he wants to be the featured pl Ayer on offense, go to a low mid major or d2 whete he can rule the paint. Not a Mullin problem, just another kid who thinks his stock is amazon.
Mullin problem when you have less talent

Sorry guys but if this happens it's not the kids fault of the fathers fault so dont throw blame that way. People were putting his tweets up here the last few years and they were almost all pro sju. during the season I walk to Dinkins and he reads twitter and he would tell me how the comments were taking a turn for the worse

I dont want him to leave and yeah the last 10 games were an improvement but if they are going by the entire season can anyone be fair and really blame them ?

From Zach...

Update on Tariq Owens: The release has been requested, per his dad, Renard Owens. "That doesn't necessarily mean he's leaving. He's going to explore his options, if there is a better option out there for him." #sjubb
Options my ass!
I love our players past and present but I love loyalty more. Does anyone think Renard Buys Houses would be able to get his walking stick son back on the team if he pulled this crap with a release on Bobby Knight?
If there was ever a player that needed continuity and growth in his game it is Owens.
My guess is Mr. and Mr. Owens are hedging their bets here hoping that graduation is possible and then they bolt. If he fails to graduate he would have to turn pro or come back.
The Bobby Knight in me says don't let the FCKG door hit your ass on the way out of Taffner.
It just puts more pressure to sign a graduate transfer ready to play or possibly start.
This is the ideal time now for Mullin, Richmond and St. Jean to show Jordan Brown mucho love against all odds.
Yep, it’s been great being married to you, love the kids and appreciate that you let me do whatever I’ve wanted but I want to see if there is a younger, prettier version out there.

I’d be surprised if Mullin took him back based on his father’s comments. Maybe he thinks he’s negotiating a house sale.

Not the news I thought I would be waking up to but I am not surprised. As long as a kid graduates and has a year of eligibility left, this will always be a possibility. But his father’s voicing his discontent publicly over the last month or so was a definite sign along with other posters here heard and posted that this was a possibility.

I doubt he had much to worry about Keita or some unknown graduate transfer next year. Clark (if he stays) would move to the 3 and Tariq a stretch 4 or the 5. Kid and his father thought he should have been more of a focal point and yes losing can get to you. Like 72 posted but using a different saying, the Bob Knight in me (can’t believe I said that) “Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya” and move on. But this is a blow no matter how you slice it. Add that we expect Yakwe to leave also and the only “big men” we have is Keita and incoming freshman Roberts and Earlington (who can’t sign an LOI until April). Keita will be serviceable next year while the other two probably won’t be ready for prime time yet.

Ironic that we find ourselves complaining about a big leaving as a grad transfer while for the last two years we’ve been hoping for a grad transfer big to come in.
Ok. Reasonable comments by his pop.
He could get more touches if he could stay out of foul trouble.
Not sure what better options he is talking about. Does he want him to play point guard?
He is not going anywhere else where he will be given anymore freedom in the offense nor exposure. Sima thought grass was greener and found out it wasn’t. Big East is on the rise and the attendance at this year’s tournaments evidences that it is still one of, if not, the best post conference tournament.
Wonder if part of it is concern that if Ponds returns, all eyes, media and offense will be on him, not Owens.
As will be the case on just about any team he goes to. Unless he is heading downstream

While I totally understand this, his father's comments are annoying. "Business decision"? C'mon get real. His father seems dillusional. If the next level is the goal, I don't see how this wouldn't be a great place to showcase that next year.

His family did ask for release subsequent to Zach B’s tweet. Father and son will meet with Mullin, but these things seldom go our way as we all know all too well.

In this world of “I gotta do what’s best for me”, doesn’t anyone ever consider the concept of “team” and “honoring commitment”? I’m the parent of a 19 year old and a 22 year old, and while Mr LoVett and Mr Owens are certainly free to advise thief kids as they’d like, IMO they are doing some piss poor parenting.

This one was not only surprising but also concerning. I am sorry but if we do not have continuity then we don't have a successful basketball team. A team of 2 star basketball players can have success if they stay together . This revolving door of transfer in and transfer out stuff is a poor way to build a roster and I feel like it has been happening for years. We have passed on our share of Desi Rodriguez type kids for the de commit, the transfer , the transgender 7 footer etc.. Recruit some hard nose city kids, play tough ball and win some games and the rest will take care of itself. Tariq Owens should not be looking to leave given the minutes he will get next year and the prospect ( hopefully) of a good season. Dig deeper on this one everyone. :(

I do not agree with Owens' asking for his release and think that it is a very bad idea. His skill set is unique and I do not believe that one year at any other school is going to help him. There is a chemistry that has formed within in the team that has allowed him to be somewhat successful. His success is dependent on the players around him. To develop this trust and cohesion takes time and if he transfers, he will not have it.

However, what I find hypocritical is that some of the posters on this site that are castigating him and his father, are the same ones lead the charge to get rid of a player when he does not perform up to "their" expectations. Commitment is a two way street.

Couldn't you make that same speech to some of the posters on this board? While I get what you are saying in terms of commitment, but how many of us are quick to turn on and criticize any of our players at the drop of a hat? That is our right as fans, and most of it is just generated from a deep passion we have for this team, but when fans consistently display a lack of commitment to the players, how can we expect the players to have that same commitment?

If all this roster turnover is thought to be completely independent of our staff, it's almost impossible to believe at this point. Not saying the staff doesn't work their tails off...they do. But I can work as hard as I possibly can and still suck at basketball. Sometimes you just can't cut it. And our staff isn't at this point...they have had as long a grace period as any staff ever including professionally. It's time to ask questions especially after this type of season. Instead of zooming in on a specific win over Duke/Villanova, we need to zoom out for a bit and take a good look at the overall program. Are we really on the right track? My fear is that if we perform well below expectations next year, instead of blaming staff the "roster turnover" will be blamed even though ironically the roster turnover is a direct indictment of the staff IMO. You always expect defections here and there occasionally, but never like this. We know Yakwe is likely gone also...where are our bigs? I'm very happy with our guards assuming Ponds stays, but we have no real impact big men left. Assuming our guards stay, it makes me feel terrible for Ponds, Simon, etc. knowing we have Sweet 16 level guards but zero bigs and it will make the climb to the NCAA tourney that much harder. I really hope we don't end up wasting Ponds' time here. I don't want to be saying "Imagine if we had real bigs with Ponds and Simon at the same time" left wondering.

I could not agree more.

Beast, the problem isn't as much his absence as it is who'll replace him in the middle. Right now we've no one other than an untested Keita.
I agree. This isnt a kid who didn't get his chance hes a kid whose dad thinks should be the focal point on offense. To me , the further he moved from the basket the less valuable he becomes . It's clear he thinks his future is out there. Let him go to Georgetown so he can be coached by a guy who was a college monster on defense who lived 20 feet from the basket in the NBA
This is my question; do you think it might be the lack of a "big man coach"? We have 2 HOF guards on the staff but no one who, in his fathers mind, can coach a big man to the next level .
To me this came out of nowhere. I was looking forward to watching him next year. His dad's statement is complimentary of the coaches, MAYBE he is looking for someone who he believes can better help a "big man"?

There is a 7 page thread of grad transfers that will get longer, and 21 pages of transfers. This is college basketball today. Players leave good teams also, but are generally the ones further down on the rotation. I don't see this as on the staff, but more as a result of a program stuck in the dumps for too long. If losing grates on us couch potato fans, imagine what it does to the players? The state of the program makes me have a love/hate relationship with March Madness. The product we watch 30 times a year , year after year, doesn't resemble in terms of team defense, ball movement and shot making what even the lower seeds are showcasing in the tournament. Owens is a nice player but far from elite. The fact that his likely departure sends the board into a frenzy is an indication of how far this program still has to go.

Dang! Can't we have one good year? Tariq's loss hurts next year's won/loss record, hurts the perception of the program in the minds of recruits and might encourage other teammates to move on.

Hopefully, the staff can woo Tariq back. If not, SJU needs an immediately eligible big man. Quadri Moore, isn't a savior but he seems like one of the better immediately big eligible men (transfers) out there.

Here's a list with 135 transfers: http://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2018. I'm sure the list will grow substantially over the next month, but we need big men now. Tariq would be the best name on this list....Tariq please reconsider.
