I will always be thankful for all he gave us...no one ever questioned his heart or effort. Best of luck to him and his father is a really nice guy...sat with or near him at several games. I understand no one wants to even question this, but if I'm being totally honest I have to. Is there something going on program wise that we don't know? Is there a perception that this staff will not be able to develop talent by players/recruits? I take all these transfers/early departures as a sort of smoke while hoping there's no fire. Trying to be fair here. Bottom line, everyone loses some players early...but I don't know another program that has this much difficulty keeping players aside from one whose coach was just fired. I could be wrong, but it would be interesting to see the stats on retention for us vs. everyone else. This team is like a whack-a-mole. You finally get one down and don't think you need to worry, then another pops up. I wonder if this has anything to do with our record this year or a lack of confidence in our coaches.
N/M
Does that mean "nevermind"? Bit confused lol
It wasn't anything directed at you. I was gonna reply to your post, but only typed a link, and deleted it.
Mike, you sound even more internet-challenged than me. "NM" means "never mind" or "no message" or "New Mexico" or something like that.

Back in February we had a discussion where some predicted further defections.  One poster predicted a future balanced roster, unlike the dreaded Steve Lavin's team. Should this happen with Owens it should not be a complete shock as recruiting transfers always can lead to a grad transfer situation. Also, retention has been too big an issue to be ignored.  If Ponds and Yakwe also leave year 4 may start looking more like a rebuild than a reload.  Finally, don't recruit players whose parents have bigger expectations for their sons than their talent exhibits. Ellison, LoVett and Owens should be lesson learned for Mullin.

This looks pretty balanced to me
SR:Clark/Owens/Yakwe
JR:ponds/[Lovett]/Simon
SO: Dixon/Trimble/Keita/[Wilson/Brown]
FR:Williams/Roberts/Diakite/[Brooks]^

Seven forward, six guards, six upperclassmen, seven underclassmen.

Lavin's last year he had six seniors (and 2 juniors, obekpa and balamou, that's eight upperclassmen, and two sophs, jordan and jones, and one freshman, the great amar alibowitz. That's an unbalanced roster.) I think balancing the roster's one of the few tangible things you can credit staff with having done and especially considering the defections.

I am starting to get the feeling Owens, Yakwe and Ponds will not be back which will put Mullin further behind in the perennial "rebuild" process with master recruiter Matt Abdelmassih not getting it done with any impact players that would be game changers next year....if Matt is even around! Three star players are not going to turn this program around. Need someone who can recruit studs and not projects.

But if the NBA is their goal, it's a weird strategy to go to a lower level to get more shots.

He'd attract a lot more attention here by trying to gain some muscle over the summer and being a Jerome Williams-type junkyard dog for us starting at the four in what would have been a high-octane offense.

I know there's been a lot of grad transfer speculation, but he was never going to lose his starter spot. It would have been Keita coming off bench, although i'm sure staff would have been vague about this when talking to Sedee. Sucks because now we'll need to find two big men.
Although, it supposedly hasn't been confirmed.... I sensed this may happen about a month ago. His dad started showing his discontent and frustration not only with his son, but the team as a whole.

He also felt his son was busting his ass, but the team's overall play wasn't smart. I think he also feels his son should get more touches and shots. I guess you could surmise being one of the featured players. I doubt that'll be the case with our squad or many other teams.

If he's truly gone, then I wish the young man the best of luck. He hustles, blocks shots, and can occasionally hit it from 15' and behind the arc.

Good luck!
Wish I could so gracious, MJ, but right now I'm pissed. We gave this young man the opportunity to get big minutes and to shine, and now when we need him most, he bails out on us. I'm probably I'm over-reacting (surprising even myself, in fact) and maybe rumors that some kids don't like playing for Mullin are true -- although you can say that about every program -- but right now I'm not feeling fondly toward to Misters Owens (i.e., father and son).
I feel ya, redken. I just try not sweat this stuff much. I also think he can replaced, but I don't trust the staff enough to be able to rectify the situation.

I said a season ago that some don't see the elephant in the room.
We're a losing program that's why so many are transferring out. Who likes losing. Thats the climate we're in with NCAA basketball, more transfers than ever Until we stabilize and start having consistent winning this will be the norm. Next year has to be the start of the turnaround.

From Zach...

Update on Tariq Owens: The release has been requested, per his dad, Renard Owens. "That doesn't necessarily mean he's leaving. He's going to explore his options, if there is a better option out there for him." #sjubb

Hmm, a better option than a team that finished last in the BE and has a less-than-stellar recruiting class coming in?

@NYPost_Brazille

Was told Tariq Owens father Renard is going to meet with Chris Mullin soon. #sjubb

I think the request to explore his options works both ways. Tariq has been a good player for us, but he is not irreplaceable. Let's move on.

I AM NOT GOING TO LOSE FAITH IN THE COACH AND STAFF. AS I said, think big players coming in more than make up if he does leave I do have my issues with coach and staff but will give them next yr before calling for their heads. Looking for a big turnaround next yr

It is up to Chris and staff to sell Tariq and his Dad on St. John's basketball and how Tariq can help St. John's get to the next level (NCAA tournament) in 2018-2019 and in doing so most benefit his own situation.

Options my ass!
I love our players past and present but I love loyalty more. Does anyone think Renard Buys Houses would be able to get his walking stick son back on the team if he pulled this crap with a release on Bobby Knight?
If there was ever a player that needed continuity and growth in his game it is Owens.
My guess is Mr. and Mr. Owens are hedging their bets here hoping that graduation is possible and then they bolt. If he fails to graduate he would have to turn pro or come back.
The Bobby Knight in me says don't let the FCKG door hit your ass on the way out of Taffner.
It just puts more pressure to sign a graduate transfer ready to play or possibly start.
This is the ideal time now for Mullin, Richmond and St. Jean to show Jordan Brown mucho love against all odds.

Addicted to this team since my dad took me to see Tony Jackson led Johnny team. That said rooting for SJU is like operating s jackhammer on the LIE in August.

Ok. Reasonable comments by his pop.
He could get more touches if he could stay out of foul trouble.

His dad is a dope who thinks his son is an NBA talent who simply didn't get the right opportunity here or in Tennessee.

Two options to get to the NBA:
1) GO to a school that will allow him to get 17 points and 12 rebounds per game against top competition

2) start his own NBA franchise along with Lovett.

If Owens was a monster NBA talent he had every opportunity to show it here. An occasional 3 point shot doesn't make you Seth curry.

Business decision? This guy right now is d league material or pro ball in Senegal or somewhere. Phil missere was a pro too like that but his dad kept his mouth shut and Phil hustled his way to an athletic scholarship that he didn't need since his patent worked here.

Wow you've gotta be kidding me.

Doesn't seem like this benefits SJU (obviously) or Owens.

After the BET exit I just wanted the core 4 to return. Maybe the issue with being a transfer heavy team is they may want to transfer again?

Wonder if part of it is concern that if Ponds returns, all eyes, media and offense will be on him, not Owens.

Red White Chair just got the word.

Owens is a good, but not great player. Nice opportunity to get xposure here. I am bummed he is leaving because we need him and he works hard. . But, I don’t see how transferring benefits him. Unless his father just doesn’t like the Mullin system. That said, the comment that Owens should shoot more is erroneous IMO.
