Adios Tariq

He must really enjoy being fawned over in the recruiting process. Probably had two years of it in high school , a year later at Tenn and now again.
I'm not shocked if it happens, since his dad was very vocal in his disappointment about Tariq's lack of shots.

But if the NBA is their goal, it's a weird strategy to go to a lower level to get more shots.

He'd attract a lot more attention here by trying to gain some muscle over the summer and being a Jerome Williams-type junkyard dog for us starting at the four in what would have been a high-octane offense.

I know there's been a lot of grad transfer speculation, but he was never going to lose his starter spot. It would have been Keita coming off bench, although i'm sure staff would have been vague about this when talking to Sedee. Sucks because now we'll need to find two big men.
Although, it supposedly hasn't been confirmed.... I sensed this may happen about a month ago. His dad started showing his discontent and frustration not only with his son, but the team as a whole.

He also felt his son was busting his ass, but the team's overall play wasn't smart. I think he also feels his son should get more touches and shots. I guess you could surmise being one of the featured players. I doubt that'll be the case with our squad or many other teams.

If he's truly gone, then I wish the young man the best of luck. He hustles, blocks shots, and can occasionally hit it from 15' and behind the arc.

Good luck!
Good to wait a bit for confirmation one way or the other
Again, Paultz, hate to say it, but I've got very solid confirmation. (Was texted 90 minutes ago.) And again, very frustrating and disappointing. Can't seem to get any traction to build a program. Seems like the wheels keep falling off.
Zack confirmed this on twitter
He said via Twitter there was no request for release yet. I just spoke with him & he confirmed that. He was trying to get more info.

P.S. The whole five-year senior free transfer nonsense has got to stop. What may have initially sounded like a good idea has turned out to be flat-out awful ... and not just for us in this case.

Maybe he's trying to explore what the rule was intended for....to pursue a graduate degree that your current school doesn't offer.

or

more minutes, shots and showcase potential...

Unbelievable. Real hard to root for this program. One step forward and three steps back, always. Or so it seems.

What, you don't like that we're getting smaller when our biggest need is size?

There is no way to put a positive spin on this if it is true. Look at the successful Big East programs such as Nova, Xavier, Butler, Creighton etc.. They do not have constant turnover as we have had the last few years. The issue here appears to be a lot deeper than how many big men we need to recruit. I hope for the best, but have come to expect a lot less.

Ouch...and yikes. Tariq is a great kid with the heart of a lion. I will always be thankful for all he gave us...no one ever questioned his heart or effort. Best of luck to him and his father is a really nice guy...sat with or near him at several games. I understand no one wants to even question this, but if I'm being totally honest I have to. Is there something going on program wise that we don't know? Is there a perception that this staff will not be able to develop talent by players/recruits? I take all these transfers/early departures as a sort of smoke while hoping there's no fire. Trying to be fair here. Bottom line, everyone loses some players early...but I don't know another program that has this much difficulty keeping players aside from one whose coach was just fired. I could be wrong, but it would be interesting to see the stats on retention for us vs. everyone else. This team is like a whack-a-mole. You finally get one down and don't think you need to worry, then another pops up. I wonder if this has anything to do with our record this year or a lack of confidence in our coaches.

Wish I could so gracious, MJ, but right now I'm pissed. We gave this young man the opportunity to get big minutes and to shine, and now when we need him most, he bails out on us. I'm probably I'm over-reacting (surprising even myself, in fact) and maybe rumors that some kids don't like playing for Mullin are true -- although you can say that about every program -- but right now I'm not feeling fondly toward to Misters Owens (i.e., father and son).

Does that mean "nevermind"? Bit confused lol

Another good kid with a prima donna parent calling the shots. It's almost like we need to start recruiting parents instead of the kids now. Why would we transfer 2x? He wants a bigger platform than MSG and starting all the time?

I feel ya, redken. I just try not sweat this stuff much. I also think he can replaced, but I don't trust the staff enough to be able to rectify the situation.

I said a season ago that some don't see the elephant in the room.

Based on some conversations with his father, I'd guess he got fed up with all the losing and expected us to be a much better team this year. He kept saying he couldn't wait for the season to end. I would jokingly ask him, "You ever tell Tariq to be careful about falling too in love with his mid range shots?" and he'd always joke back something like "He can make that shot man, just gotta keep shooting". Like I said, really nice guy but my sense (which can be completely wrong btw) is that he just got so frustrated with all the losing. If we made the NCAA tourney this year, I bet he would've stayed.

It wasn't anything directed at you. I was gonna reply to your post, but only typed a link, and deleted it.

Think he new that his mins were going to be compromised. Yes, even the possibility losing his starting spot Now many may not agree however it could be a possibility. Beside blocks his D was average could not play with his back to the basket, foul prone and strong rebounding not there for someone 6-11 I would have liked him to stay but we will adapt This is not the coaches fault

Maybe not the coach's fault directly, but I think recruits/players/parents of players might be starting to lose faith in the direction of the program as a whole. I will probably get reamed for this, but if we're talking about the elephant in the room...

WTF! Let’s not pin this on CM or any of the previous coaches anymore. Something is severely flawed to continuously be snake-bitten like this. This crap pisses me off more than anything else with the program.

Every single year you can count on 2 or 3 players leaving who otherwise would never have left if it were another program.
