2023-24 Rankings

AP Top 25 for 1/1/24:
#4 UConn (+1)
#7 Marquette (+3)
#23 Providence (+2)

#27 Creighton (-5)
#29 Utah (-)
#41 Villanova (-4 / tied)

Typically unranked teams need to beat a ranked team to get the AP's attention, so while Utah has a NET of #16 and had a solid week (beat UW) they still aren't ranked. Certainly would be next week though if they beat #10 Arizona on Saturday.

Creighton dropped out (despite their NET ranking of #14), but the other Big East teams moved up. Let's hope Providence at a minimum goes 1-1 this week against Seton Hall and @ Creighton so they have a shot at remaining ranked for the MSG game next week.

Tough league, blood bath

Michigan also back to Quad 2. SJU has 4 Quad 1/2 wins and no quad 3/4 losses. They’d have to be easily on the right side of the bubble as of today, probably at least a 9 seed.

One thing spanarkel kept saying was that they need a “signature win.” And then he said providence at home would be an opportunity for one. That just makes no sense. St. John’s already beat #18 Utah on a neutral court! Utah is 5-2 in Quad 1/2 games and has no bad losses. Beating #50 providence at home isn’t even quad 1.

Sorry for double post, but decided to look at resumes as of today. There are only 21 teams with at least 4 good wins and zero bad losses (“good win” meaning quad 1/2 and “bad loss” being quad 3/4). Here they are:

Houston
Purdue
Arizona
Tennessee
UConn
Clemson
Marquette
Kansas
UNC
Creighton
Wisconsin
Colorado St.
Utah
SDSU
Utah St.
Oklahoma
Memphis
GCU
St. John’s
Providence

They won’t be, but imo SJU should be ranked if they beat nova this weekend.

Bracketology 1/5:

ESPN/Lunardi - 2nd team out

Bracketville - 11 seed First Four

CBS/Palm - 11 seed First Four

Way too early for this stuff obviously, but still a great sign that we're back in the NCAAT picture. Winning tomorrow would move us out of the First Four in most / all of these brackets.

We’ll probably get some votes next week after this win. If we can beat Providence at home and somehow win at Creighton we’ll be Top 20 the following week.

Would be tough to win both, but certainly doable. The AP as a whole doesn't pay much attention to teams that are unranked (unless they are playing ranked teams) when they fill out their ballots, so we're going to need Creighton to be ranked on Monday.

Currently Creighton is #27 with 106 votes. #25 has 168 votes. Creighton did beat #23 Providence so that'll help, and they'll obviously pass them to move up to #26, though other teams in the #20-25 range haven't lost so it's not a guarantee yet that Creighton will be ranked.

#17 Florida Atlantic did just lose to a bad Charlotte team, so maybe they'll pass them.

Would help Creighton's chances if the following teams lose tonight:
#22 Ole Miss @ #5 Tennessee (possibly not enough to knock out Ole Miss)
#24 Gonzaga Vs. San Diego
#20 Texas Vs. Tech Tech (though TT themselves could be ranked with a win so maybe better for Texas to win)

All we can do is just keep beating the teams we have to play. If we do that and win enough games we’ll be in the tournament ranked or not. If we’re not ranked then we’ll be the team that blows up everyone’s bracket!!!

Yep of course, my post isn't about our season outlook but rather only about this upcoming week. Would be great if Creighton is ranked for that big Fox game next weekend. Want to see Pitino and the the team get their first ranked win (and enter the rankings themselves) as it'd help St. John's get more exposure and ticket sales.

Doesn’t matter if Creighton is ranked or not when we play them. If we win these next two games we will be in the Top 25.
