Transfer Portal 2022

I personally just can't kid us landing another transfer for this year. There simply aren't enough minutes to give out that would entice anyone of substance to come here, while also keeping who we currently have happy.
There is a starting forward spot up for grabs if a 4- or 5-star transfer wanted in. But if a kid isn't a significant upgrade over Pinzon (my choice), Wusu, or Storr, then there's no point.

I would argue those minutes are already taken by guys currently on the roster. A 4 or 5 star transfer is going to want 30 mins a game. So then you now have 4 starters who are expecting 30+ mins a game. Simply not enough minutes to give out, especially with trying to keep the current guys happy and not expecting another mass exodus next off season. Delicate balance.

Not my preference, but would not be surprised if they don’t get the elusive difference making shooter, lose out on Awaka and save the last scholarship. If they could get Awaka, take him and go to battle with what you have I guess and hope Wusu, Pinzon, Jones, Storr and perhaps an improved Posh get it done from three. May not have a choice, but at least SJ will be competitive in BE, which I did not anticipate pre portal.

Yes, all of this. We are in a position to be patient, and more selective. I don’t see another guard joining this team, and the 6’6 -6,9 versatile wing are in high demand.

Still a lot of irons in the fire so to speak, and I have faith that some of these guys retained will make some drastic improvements in the off-season.

Personally, I would prefer a shot blocker. We have the potential to be a nasty team defensively next year. Rebound and run run run. Not worried about the offense.

Awaka would be a good get.

Do you think that Nywie, can be an effective shot blocker? He's athletic and seems intelligent, am hopeful he can fill that role more effectively this year.

Is there a benefit to not using all available scholarships?

Nywie will definitely improve and be more effective, however I want a specialist though.

We don’t have any 6’8-6’9 tweeners this year. Big boys are gonna have to patrol the block and everybody else is goin a have to be pests.

Maybe even cut down on pressing and just get after it as soon as they cross half court.
This year will hinge on how our defense does.

I would argue that if someone like Patrick Baldwin Jr. decided he wanted in because CMA and his dad know each other through various coaching organizations, you take him and don't look back. The bottom four guys might be unhappy, but passing up a more solid top nine than we have now would be crazy in my opinion.

I'm not saying what I would personally do. Just sharing perspective. We know CMA is a man of integrity and looks out for his kids. I don't see him as the type to pull the rug out from under them.

I actually think he'd win the starting PF spot if we deploy Jones at SF. If we opt for Jones to line up at PF then I think it's a three-man race to fill the SF spot.
He doesn’t strike me as a guy who would play the 4 in CMA’s system.

Who’s your 4th man out in that three man race scenario?

I think he'd give us more than Stanley would as a starter there, and Nyiwe is more suited to energy guy role off bench.

I think it's Pinzon, Wusu, and Storr, so I guess Mathis would be odd man out? But I wasn't even thinking him because I have him in bottom third of depth chart. But some other posters insist he'll get minutes, so we'll see.

It we stand pat I could easily live with Wusu at PF if Jones is SF. I do want to see a Curbelo/Posh/Pinzon/Soriano/Jones lineup though. I think in that scenario Wusu gets the call off the bench first in every instance no matter who is coming out.

Awaka would probably shift to center once Soriano departs, so it would be nice to have a seasoned soph to slide over. I expect Joel to be good enough this year that we don't get him for a fifth year.

I feel like we need one more kid to give us an extra kick. If it's a former high school stud transfer who can start at forward, I'm really excited. if it's a bench player, I say hold the spot.
