Yankees 2024 Season

Brett homer off Goose at the Stadium was the dagger that cost Dick Howser his job.

However we did beat them 3 straight times in ALCS before that. Never forget the Nettles/Brett and Randolph/Frank White wars.

Judge is 1 for 18 with 11 K's vs game 1 starter Michael Wacha.

He is 0 for 8 vs. game 3 starter Seth Lugo.

Will he turn it around, or is this just a bad matchup for him?

Maybe Volpe pulls an Al Weiss the hero of the 1969 Amazing Met World Series unbelievable victory over the Orioles.

So often it's the guys you don't expect who make the biggest impact.

Most of the playoff games so far have been dominated by pitching. Runs are at a premium. Defense, above all, is at a premium. Dominguez has potential, but not yet. The cost of him misjudging fly balls or getting bad jumps could be catastrophic.
Verdugo has to play. His bat has been weak, but his numbers are similar to Dominguez. Next year Dominguez can have the job, but not yet.

Boone had three choices to choose from in regard to who starts in left field. He could've chosen to prioritize offense and upside by starting Jasson Dominguez. He could've chosen to prioritize defense by starting Trent Grisham. He could've chosen to prioritize none of those things by starting Verdugo. Guess what Boone chose?

I won't mention who, but if you know Boone and that he's an idiot, then you'll know who he's going to.

Dominguez has the upside but didn’t do much in his limited opportunities. He is supposed to be a good defensive Centerfielder but his play in left has been sketchy at best (and during his play in the minors this year scouts and other observers have been wondering if the layoff has affected his defense).

Grisham a gold glove Centerfielder who had his share of mishaps in center this year has not played much in left and is all or nothing (a lot more nothing than more) at the plate (hit under .200 his last three seasons). His 9 home runs this season is only 4 less than Verdugo’s 13 and Verdugo had almost 400 more at bats. Quite frankly, although he has taken flyballs in left this week, if he was really an option, you would think he had played a few games out there in September.

Verdugo is considered a good left fielder and despite his poor offensive showing after the first month and a half of the season, offers more offense overall than Grisham and better defense than Dominguez. So he gets the nod in Game 1. Does not mean he will in any of the subsequent games.

(I probably jinxed him and he will go 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and a huge blunder in left field.)
