Xavier (MSG), Wed., Jan. 22 , 7p, FS-1

Only two people think that Ayo is an actual player: Ayo and Marillac.

Ayo's job is to go be an energy and defense guy for a few minutes. And he's wonderful for that. The problem is when he thinks that he should also do anything else (with the possible exception of a layup or dunk). Peter principle in action.
Always felt he would be better served at lower level program, which does not make me scout of the year. lol

However w Rick’s overseas contacts, he may get a better paying gig than had he stayed in MAAC.

Local guy, representing Strong Island!
A guy we insulted by never really recruiting him. At the time I was working with a guy who would talk about this kid from Cold Spring Harbor. He would have really been a steal with the NBA in his future. I don’t know the specifics but I don’t remember us considering him.

Our bench gave us 7 point and 7 rebounds; Xavier's gave them 2 points and 3 rebounds. With the exception of UCONN when they are at full strength our bench is as good as any of the other top 5 Big East teams, probably better with Smith playing.
The bench also provided big defensive boosts from Prey especially, but also Glover in his limited minutes.

I honestly think Smith coming off the bench makes the most sense in the long-run. He can either come in for Sim if he's out of control, or come in for Kadary and change the pace early on with energy.

Was at the game last night. While the 1st 25 minutes were ugly, the whole crowd was itching to get in it. Once we got it to 6, the game pressure was getting to X. The garden really came alive. X to their credit have a good team. Freemantle and Conwell are tough. We were fortunate Mcknight missed front ends of 1 and 1s. that left the door open for us. I would not look forward to playing them in the BET.

BTW, i do enjoy going back and reading the game thread. We have a manic fan base, myself included!

Our strength

“When you play them, their level of intensity, their level of physicality, their spirit, their will to win, is something that whoever beats them, they have to be able to cross over that very, very tall mountain,” Miller said. “It’s a relentless style, and their pressure broke us. I have an amazing respect for St. John’s, their intensity, their ferocity, their relentless nature.”

“They have the great blend of being a full-court pressure team and also a half-court pressure team. They’re not as heavy in the full-court trapping, taking risks, making it frenetic. They’re just wearing you out. They can really wear on you with their style. The other thing that makes them just really unique is Aaron Scott and Zuby, when they switch. I thought their switching late in the game, the pressure, it really took us out of a lot of things that we were able to do earlier in the game.”

Love this quote from our coach:
We’re a humble group,” Pitino said. “We don’t have that ego. Ego is what kills every team, it kills every coach, it kills every athlete. We just recruited people that want to win, so we’ve done a great job in recruiting. One of the big keys is humility. If you have humility, you’re gonna get better. If you have an ego, you’re gonna get delusional.”

Keep recruiting kids like this please!

He was never recruited by any big school. We were not the only ones to insult him. He played in a weak HS conference and was over looked but all around the Tri-State area before there was any internet people knew who Wally was.

Pitino has such confidence in this group. His press conferences are fantastic. He thought Xavier was the better team tonight (and they were) and told his guys to give them credit at the half and not give up.

Its amazing what happens when you get guys to buy in. Egos at the door, hard hats instead.

This has that 99 feel where our NYC guys just out-toughed teams. Physical, well coached and hungry. Enjoy the ride!!!
