Where is the mystery candidate?

How about the truth, that works most of the time.
We'll never know the truth
But we'll hear about a dozen versions of it.

Let’s be realistic. An extension wasn’t affecting any high school kids Mullin was recruiting and we all know why. And we just lost our only recruiter. The only blame in the administration goes to the ones that let this go on
If we are going to hire one of the current D1 Head Coaches here is an article (see link below) wriiten 4 months ago that ranked this season's 353 D1 Head Coaches from bottom to top. FYI Mullin was ranked #166, Cluess was somewhere in the low eighties (82 I believe), Hurley was in the low sixties and Mike Brey was top twenty (seventeen I believe).

For what it is worth the number one ranked coach was not smart enough to get the ball to Elton Brand during crunch time of the 1999 chamionship game against UCONN and did not run a single play for Zion Williamson in the last three minutes of their elite eight game loss against Michigan State this season. So as the writer Maragret Wolfe Hungerford penned, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Interesting rankings, released during the 2018-19 season.
Some oft-mentioned names mentioned: Grasso 316, Leitao 177, Rhoades 174, Mullin 168, Pikiell 151, Oats 112, Odom 111, Ewing 92, Willard 91, Cluess 82, Pitino Jr., 81, Hardaway 78, Dawkins 77, Miles 76, Moser 75, Amaker 70, Bobby Hurley 63, McKillop 56, Danny Hurley 54, Cooley 53,Mack 26, Pearl 24, Brey 17.
Right, I hear you guys, I've got no life.
Lol.

Hopefully by Good Friday, we'll have a good coach in place. Hard to see the need for it dragging on much longer than that.

True, NCJ.
Don’t see any reason why it cannot be ‘done’ this week. Hoping for a solid choice we can all rally around and that the roster stays ‘intact’ until we get our new HC.
As the days roll by, this is reminding me more and more of the Norm hire.
How about the Mike Rice ‘hire’?
Maybe we’ll be coached ‘by committee’ next season?!?
Gotta laugh.

So you're saying it's Norm oh great! :silly:
Couple things:
A) Odom seems like a good candidate. I reject the fact that we should be worried that he will jump ship. If he does, well, that means he's won here. That's something we haven't had in a while.

B) Our friend Zach tweeted that the admin did not block the Rice hire FWIW.
B) heard the same from someone close.

72 posts some very detailed exchanges which people in the ad wonder how people report conversations between 2 people. I'm not saying 72 is not reporting what he had heard from people very close to situation, but someone(s) very close is putting out bullshit in terms of how stuff went down.

Rice situation is perfect example. I no longer know who is telling truth. I heard something different than in article and now zach reports same

I do not believe for example that Cragg would be instructed to publicly give a vote of confidence when Bobby expressed no confidence. I don't believe Bobby rolls that way.

A lot of stuff doesn't add up, but sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, and sometimes people very close to situation are either wrong or lying.

Starting to believe Mullin may have resigned after asking for extension but who knows. I cant see us eating 2 years by firing after an NCAA year no matter how badly it ended. But who knows?

Been off for a while super busy. Latest I see is Mike Brey but let's be real there's probably no chance at him because it's another too good to be true hire. I'd love to have him but we all know it won't happen. There really haven't been any real leaks...Cragg must've seen how the Mullin thing played out on social media and demanded that everyone keep their mouths shut about the new hire. Gotta give him kudos, nothing is out there.
The common concern those who have been contacted seems to boil down to security. Mully was the face of SJU, and beloved by all. So when the question has been asked"why wasn't Mully offered some kind of extension?" Answer: blah, blah, blah. Question: "wouldnt it made more sense to offer a two year extension with a lower buyout if expectations were not met next season? Answer: blah, blah, blah...so what I am hearing was Mully was expected to stay next season, and the playing hardball and handcuffing him scares people away. Cragg should of announced they were working on an extension, and then if they couldnt agree to a much lower buyout, or a snag was hit, the tree would be much fuller!
If you think Cragg was operating independently from the university President you are sadly mistaken. Everyone knew that the foundation had cracks. Especially after Matt bolted in a New York minute.
Look, like it or not, our favorite son was the one playing hard ball here. He still had 2 years remaining on his contract. A fifth year was expected of him before an extension was discussed just as with Lavin. Had he been successful in various areas over the past 4 years no one would have denied him an extension. Facts are he wasn't and recruiting was tanking faster than the Titanic. I think those closest to Mully knew his heart was not into it any longer and this was a good time to walk away as if money and security were an issue. Security? Money? He didn't need either. Dedication to the job long term? Going into his fifth year his wife's permanent address was still in California with Chris living in an apartment. Mitch Richmond was half way out the door and was half hearted about his job.
This talk of an extension was a smokescreen for all parties.

This post needs to be stickied.

The program was left in terrible-condition Rebuilding is really hard ,we need a coach who has a pipeline and can bring in immediately top recruits. A big good center would be a nice start. But I feel only a real exp high profile coach would be able to it it quickly

Bradley's post outlines exactly what I've been saying regarding Mullin. The job was a paycheck to him and nothing more as evidenced by his actions. If he really did have a soft spot for SJ he wouldn't demand every penny of the buyout. It would be like having a close family friend charging max price to install floors or something. The idea is that you give people close to you a bit of a break as a nice gesture out of respect. That never happened with Mullin...with every bit of new info coming out about him, the happier I am he's gone. The NBA guys as coaches just don't seem to care as much...they turn into divas after years and years living in mansions and probably paying for everyone to do everything. Of course he didn't grow up rich in the old-school pre-hipster Brooklyn, but he has certainly been living very lavish for decades. Get someone in here who is established but still willing to put in the hard work.

Short week with school closed Th & Fri. It would be nice to have a little clarity, in extremely tightly managed process that only Cragg seems to have a handle on, by mid week.

The longer the selection of the next coach takes has me wondering why there are no candidates hopefully in their thirties, coaching in the high mid major leagues like the A10, AAC, MAC, who would be interested in the SJU job.
We have Cluess from one of the lowest mid majors at sixty and now the Loyala coach at fifty. I guess I was wrong about just how desirable the job is. We really look like a mid major and not a very high one either.

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder about this myself. And when you think about it, our last 2 head coaches were Mullin--who wasn't even a coach and hence no other NCAA team was looking to hire him--and Lavin, who hadn't coached in seven years.

Just maybe they know better then to accept the job, don't mean it in a negative way, but you gotta ask,
why hasn't anyone accepted it?

I think the reason it has been so quiet, is because we want to build a Major College Program but want to spend for a coach at bargain basement prices. The two just don't go together.
