Where is the mystery candidate?

Cincy hires John Brennan. Scratch him off the list of quality candidates.

Perhaps Darren Savino warrants a call over these Duke assts. the guy know Ny/Nj

This search needs to happen soon because a lot of players have deadlines coming up.[/quote]

You could win a national championship at Notre damn and still be second fiddle on campus. Not saying he’d be interested but these guys have egos. Maybe he wants a new challenge and place that if he did succeeed would be revered.

I did read that Savino had a place on Mick's staff at UCLA if he didn't get the HC job.
Still want someone who has HC experience myself.

Brannan is a native of Alexandria KY, which is a suburb of Cincy (only about a 20 minute drive from the heart of the Queen City).

Of course, we can never truly know how someone else thinks, but my guess is, even if we did talk to him, he would have chosen the Bearcats over us, assuming salary (and everything else) were somewhat close.

Actually, I'm somewhat surprised that Xavier didn't take a shot at him last year, although Travis Steele could very well do a great job there.

He is expected to join UCLA. I think he makes more sense here than Scheyer.

For Mike Brey a switch to the BE might serve him better in terms of success. Let's have it, the BE isn't the ACC. He's competing with Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, Syracuse etc. It's hard to win consistently in that league of you aren't the blue bloods. He could easily come here, make St John's the top big East team, and make deeper tourney runs. You bring on Brey, Borman, Hsu and Phelps and this program would be a juggernaut. Obliviously a pipe dream, but it would be one hell of a staff.

FWIW, just read a recent article about ND in the South Bend Tribune.
ND just went through a tough season, 14-19 overall, 3-15 in the ACC due to a bunch of key injuries.
Brey's got 2 'ships to fill, via a reg transfer and a grad transfer.
His style may offend many on this Board. "ND never will be a buckle-down, lock-you-down defensive group. Virginia it's not. Nobody is."
And Brey plays 6-7 max; is 'offensively'-minded, a talent the team lacked in the 2018-19 season averaging ~69 pts/g versus ~75 pts/g in their first 5 seasons in the ACC
He signed an extension last year that takes him through the 2024-25 season. At the time he said, it looked like he'd be able to retire as HC of ND, something he'd always hoped to do.
Maybe things have changed, but I wonder if Brey would leave with unfinished business on the table?
Dunno.

For sure more than Scheyer. I just would DQ anyone who hasn't been a HC myself. And Cragg's quote I thought mentioned HC too but I could be wrong.

Hey, truth be told, it’s time for the fans to sit back and let Cragg and the staff hire the right guy. Big names etc aren’t gonna cut it. Just win baby... get us a real coach that competes and I’ll be happy. It’s a big hire for Cragg. Let’s see what he comes up with.

The common concern those who have been contacted seems to boil down to security. Mully was the face of SJU, and beloved by all. So when the question has been asked"why wasn't Mully offered some kind of extension?" Answer: blah, blah, blah. Question: "wouldnt it made more sense to offer a two year extension with a lower buyout if expectations were not met next season? Answer: blah, blah, blah...so what I am hearing was Mully was expected to stay next season, and the playing hardball and handcuffing him scares people away. Cragg should of announced they were working on an extension, and then if they couldnt agree to a much lower buyout, or a snag was hit, the tree would be much fuller!

Who knows what happened? Didn't Mullin's "resignation" occur when Cragg was in Minnesota?

And you don't have to have a good memory.

Don't think we know the details of that 'extension talk', do we?
Did Mully seeks a guaranteed extension and was rebuffed, first by Cragg and then by Gempesaw?
Was a 'non-guaranteed' extension on the table and did CM reject that?
He had 2 years left and wouldn't have been a 'lame-duck' HC until after next season.
Why was an extension 'necessary' following a very disappointing finish to the season?

If we are going to hire one of the current D1 Head Coaches here is an article (see link below) wriiten 4 months ago that ranked this season's 353 D1 Head Coaches from bottom to top. FYI Mullin was ranked #166, Cluess was somewhere in the low eighties (82 I believe), Hurley was in the low sixties and Mike Brey was top twenty (seventeen I believe).

For what it is worth the number one ranked coach was not smart enough to get the ball to Elton Brand during crunch time of the 1999 chamionship game against UCONN and did not run a single play for Zion Williamson in the last three minutes of their elite eight game loss against Michigan State this season. So as the writer Maragret Wolfe Hungerford penned, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

If that wasn’t a foreseen problem then we really might be in trouble. That is why I thought there was no way in hell mullin would get pushed out.

Who knows how it all truly went down but it seems like no one does or has ever wanted to give sju the benefit of the doubt. Media and local coaches alike.

Usually there would be an announcement that one was being worked on. The need for one would be to hire a quality assistant. If Mully was recruiting 20 or 21 kids the extension would be needed.
I have no idea why Mully was turned down by Bobby and Mike regarding an extension. They should of been open to discuss favorable terms for the school if they werent confident he could get it done! Lower the buy out!!!

Understandable why Mullin would ask for an extension. Difficult for school to close on 2020 recruits like Curbelo if Coach's contract expires at the end of their of their freshman year; same thing for a new AC or ACs. Have to believe either Cragg concluded Mullin wasn't the guy and time to move on that was now or Mullin refused to entertain a non-guaranteed extension. Not sure we'll ever know which it was.
