Where is our coach today?????

This past weekend provided plenty of opportunities for this staff to recruit and it would not have any made a dent in the budget. Regardless of whether or not they are looking at 2014 or concentrating on 2015, they still need to be on the road recruiting 2015 players just as hard as 2014.

I once saw Jarvis after a big win on Saturday go to Rose Hill at Fordham the next day to catch some High School games at a tournament. Allen Ray (St. Raymonds) and Curtis Sumpter (Loughlin) who both wound up at Nova were sophmores and played. Jarvis had everyone eating out of his hand. He had such a chance to make in-roads but he didn't. Got lazy and thought everyone should come to him. Hope Lavin is not doing the same.

Once sat next to Jarvis at AAU event in Jersey. Kenny Satterfield was playing and lighting it up. I casually asked how he liked Kenny's game. He replied, "Nothing special" in a very snippy way. Arrogance and poor judgment rolled into one. Satterfield turned out very well.

I actually think the word is out in BB Circles, insiders, that Lavin will leave the Program before his contract is up.. His absence on the recruiting trail would seem to give some credibility to that happening.

Or, even worse, like NORM, is word out in the BB community that Lavin is a poor Coach? Not able to improve a player's game? Forget Harkless, he blew up in his first year. Lavin had little to do with his game. Maybe Dunlap more so.

There can be no credibility to this - only speculation. Lavin wouldn't disclose this to anyone but his wife and his closest friend in basketball - perhaps Keady, no one else. It would serve him horribly if this were true for that to get out, so I file that in the load of crap category.

That's not sayin he won't walk, but is saying that anyone saying it is just speculating.

Several posters here, not only myself have posted similar opinions..The NY Post outlined the complete absence of any SJU attendance at recent tournaments, no recruits yet committed, local kids going elsewhere, etc. NY Press is still asking those questions, even after last night's win..

And, why wouldn't opposing COACHES use whatever means at their disposal to discredit Lavin's Coaching abilities. The team is 1-5 with widely proclaimed elite talent, if you were a opposing Coach, wouldn't you, at least, mention that?

And, wouldn't you ask recruits at these HS tournaments, "where are the ST john's people?"

And, despite his denials, the questions are still being asked about his continuing here. So, sure its' speculation but, so is speculating about his staying..

And, how did Lavin's wife get into the discussion?

Sums up him perfectly.

Complete nonsense from one of the worst posters on this baord(and that's saying a lot)

Just please stop posting, especially such complete made up crap

From you, I take that as a compliment. You need to re-read the rules of conduct on this board. And, check your spelling too.BOARD.

While recruiting, if you need to focus on the shortcomings and faults of other programs in order to make your own program look more appealing, then you really need to take a step back and take a look in the mirror. It's like saying, "hey, we aren't the best, but at least we aren't them." Not the best recruiting tactic out there.

Um it's pretty effective. Negative advertising, negative campaigning .. everyone likes to trash it, but it works.
If you can explain why school X is shitty, it's going to make a player think twice before going there. Especially when you can then convince him of the positive things your program has to offer.

It's all in the game yo - O

What do you think Bobby Knight would have said (or done) to you if you asked him about Charles Barkley's game at the Olympic tryouts? Just saying.

Knight didn't care for Charles, his game or, his mouth. Bobby also didn't give Walter Berry much help either, when he tried out as a JUCO Player of the year from San Jacinto.. This was before Walter's joining us for the Final 4 year. Walter had the kind of game, either you liked it or .. didn't... Most liked it in 1986 when he followed Mullin as POY in College BB..

Walter wasn't known to give the ball up, once he got it but, why would you want him to give it up when he basically could score on anyone, at any time. He is one of my ALL TIME favorite Redmen.. WISH we had him for his last year in 1987 but, NBA $$ was there.

Recruiting is not all about the top 100 recruits. There are a # of very good and
developing recruits out there. Unless you are in the top 10, the numbers might be skewed.
The JUCO route is propably in play because that would help get his numbers slowly back to
normal. Can't afford to have to bring in 6 players in Fall 2015. Lavin has a couple of players
he is looking at and I'll bet they will fit in nicely.

Wasn't his eligibility up? A few weeks before the NBA draft, I saw a talk show where Red Auerbach was being interviewed. They asked him about the top players in the draft, and he didn't mention Berry. The interviewer said, what about Walter Berry , he was player of the year? Auerbach flatly replied, "I don't like him. He doesn't play defense."

BTW, Berry was in my top 5, because after Mullin, he was the best offensive force SJU had over the past 35 years.

Berry missed out on the NBA more because he was all left hand and no right, rather than any defensive deficiency.

How do you figure that? His career average was 14.1 ppg on 54% shooting from the field. Per 36 minutes he averaged 21.3 ppg. The absence of a right hand was not a deficiency whatsoever, as his unorthodox style couldn't be stopped on the left or right side of the basket. He averaged 4,7 rebounds per game, 7.2 per 36 minutes. Defensively, he was considered a liability,

He was invited to several camps by NBA teams after he left for Spain, but he became such a big star there he was making far too much money to return. Reportedly $5 million per year, there, coached by Sergio Luyk's dad.

To his credit Berry was player of the year in college at maybe 6 ft 8 and 200 lbs even though he could only shoot from 12 ft. He had no chance of matching up strengthwise with any interior big men and he had no outside game. Every thing he threw up from around the basket seemed to hang on the rim and fall in.
He was a fabulous high school rebounder but stayed pretty much the same size and weight. He looked tiny standing next to Ewing.

I'm sure this didn't help:

Fortunately for Walter standing is not a prerequisite for basketball. Jumping on the other hand....

I loved Walter's game at St. John's, but the fact is he was player of the year in the Big East, Wooden award winner and the 14th overall pick. He played only 3 seasons in the NBA with 4 teams and had continual run ins with coaches including Larry Brown. He went to Italy for 1 year and played the majority of a good Euroleague career in Greece

The team had three days home with no games. I am curious to know which high school games Lavin and staff attended. Please let me know if you have heard.

Can we stop all this "where is staff" stuff. Every time we think he's not gonna come through he lands guys, Jordan over Temple and UCLA, CO over Cincy, Orlando over Prov. Sure he hasn't hit on every target and lost some that were on the way here. If not for a last min shady deal with tiny, Whitehead is here and you know what I'm proud he didn't play that game. Coach went out and followed Jakarr all over after fighting cancer and re-recruited him over Kansas and Prov so i'll let him handle it and not worry where he is every minute.

Berry missed out on the NBA more because he was all left hand and no right, rather than any defensive deficiency.

From the NY Times article cited above:

"At 6-8, Berry has been a far cry from the dominant offensive player he was at St. John's. A left-hander, Berry has never learned to shoot well right-handed or to drive effectively to his right. His jump shot is erratic, and once he begins a move to the basket, he rarely passes. He is often caught in the air with no place to go, leading to either a bad shot or a turnover. But Reed was most upset with Berry's defense and concentration."
