Where is our coach today?????

If we don't sign any 2014 recruits (and it's not looking to good unless we get De La Rosa, who did state a few weeks ago that St. John's are among the teams recruiting him the hardest)

Then we are looking at the same team this year next year, except maybe minus Obekpa and Rysheed (said purely out of speculation and from watching their body language)

Unless Christian Jones comes back as the next Patrick Ewing, we will probably go on to have a worse year than this year, which is scary!

Before this year, I thought we had two solid years ahead and then lavin would bring in some good 2015 recruits so we'd be in good shape afterwords, now, I seriously question our future, especially with lavin as the head coach

Lavin and his $taff do not have reputations as hard workers on the recruiting trail.

I am told by someone that is an acquaintance of Chris McCullough that Chris had sparse contact with Mr.Lavin and Lavin's $taff the 3 months prior to his commitment to Syracuse University.

StJohns loses 3 players this season but brings in zero recruits.

Be careful because making such allegations about our staff may get your missive deleted by one of your fellow mods here. LOL!
I find it hilarious that most fans here have constantly referred to Lav as a great recruiter as his most endearing quality yet when I pointed out what was going on here in NYC in terms of the staffs' invisibility at key games I was roundly criticized by some who have become some of the biggest Lav haters here now. Two are mods and a couple are well respected supporters. Some coaches are lazy recruiters and Lav fits that mold, especially with Mary at home and many people do not realize how often she travels with him but neither are ever present in our high gyms locally. However, he has an assistant who knows the city like the back of his hand who should be active. The other assistants are out of towners who need a city map and private driver to get them to a gym. It is all very disturbing since recruiting is the lifeline for lower tier programs trying to move up the ladder like SJ.

Just curious what did Keady and Whitesell bring to our program? I was hoping. they would have given us a pipeline to top recruits .

Yea, Keady recommended some 55 year old youngsters from the adult rec league in his retirement community. They could shoot, but they had used up their eligibility. Give me a break. He was retired for 6 years before he came to St. John's. What pipeline did you expect him to have? As far as Whitesell, maybe I'm mistaken, but was he a recruiter? His last gig was associate head coach. As such he might not even been involved in recruiting.

Lavins the recruiter. We are so far behind the 8 ball w 0 recruits and only 1 prospect for 14, he has to get off his butt and start working How difficult is it to make an appearance at CTK and watch Addonis?

It seems rather simple. If coach can do one thing, it's recruiting ranked HS talent. if he doesn't get an significant recruits over the next 2 seasons, it's because he is planning an exit. So that solves that, and many posters get their wish. If he is planning on staying, he will sign some quality recruits. That's his M.O. Either way, it will all work out.

Your comment on Keady gave me a laugh. Not much to laugh about these days

When I posted a while ago that I ran into the CTK Girls Coach / AD, and he stated he had never seen Lavin in his gym, the comments were knocked as untrue. Now we're seeing how this is the norm.

Recruiting is a fulltime, all in process that requires contact early on and continues until letters are faxed in. Clearly we are not seeing this with this staff. We're better off getting lower rated, high IQ kids to go along with a coach who can get the most out of them. We're never going to see success with this staff.

You should have told him that we had also never seen our coach in player's hotel rooms, which puts us one up on CTK's history.

Honestly, I spent a season with CTK coaches and staff, and they are the most arrogant bunch of losers I've ever met in basketball. By and large they are a bunch that thinks everyone should be kissing their butts, and that they are some sort of empire. You would think their assistants are assistant coaches with the Miami Heat for the way they behave. Some think they are incredibly special to be coaching a CTK AAU team or JV team. Many of them have no other personal success in their lives, live in ramshackle conditions, and make fun of players that they coaxed in coming. I'm sure the girls coaches are still laughing about how they coaxed the great Kaz to transfer to CTK from Sachem, telling her she'd play point, then mocking her when she got there, saying "What made you think that, we have Sue Bird." And like many successful city program, they spend half their time raiding other AAU and HS programs to get players, and are not developing players themselves.

Why wait though?
If 0 come in for next year it will be 1sophmore and 0 freshmen for year unless Jordan transfers.
If no recruit by late April then he MUST GO.

But I don`t think some on this board gets it.

Honestly though, if we were winning, no one on here would care about getting 2014 recruits. It's just a gut reaction when we lose that you want new players on the court

I would. Always gotta recharge the battery.

Jack, the players we have include Orlando and Gift who, as it turns out, have become key players for our team. Obekpa has been an issue since his early season suspension. Jakarr is not the Mailk Sealy we hoped he would become but we are not sure he stays. Do you realize our entire front line could be gutted by the end of this season??
If you think we get out rebounded now, wait until Christian Jones plays center! He may look big and strong but he was as poor a rebounder as anyone last year.
This recruiting cycle was critical for revitalizing our front court woes and the staff has failed thus far. Rated recruits have all committed and unless there is a Juco gem out there we will get hammered inside next year. Meanwhile Providence and Seton Hall are reloading for next year and have decent size and DePaul has two very promising freshman. Butler is just having an off year so we could be looking at being stuck dead last in the Big East for some time unless this staff pulls a rabbit out of Lavin's culo!
In a nightmare scenario Briscoe and Diallo sign elsewhere and we become the doormat of the conference for years to come.

Doom and Gloom, relax. Let the season play out before we are "doormat for years to come" thank god this board wasn't around back in the 30's and 40's we would all be.................

When I see how our "rated recruits" have turned out maybe we should consider recruiting non rated recruits

The highest priority in a recruit's choice of college is playing time. Backcourt men and swing men see Harrison,Greene,Branch,Balamou,Jordan and Pointer as competition for time . Big men see Obepka , Sampson and Jones . There are not many high school players who can earn significant time under these conditions. Remember Jordan is considered a top five point guard recruit and he has struggled some.
Are there good players who are willing to sit for a year? That number would be very small. Hopefully a big from jr. college who can contribute immediately can be brought in.
A big recruiting year in 2015 is a must.

I am sure if the tournament was played on the Chelsea pier, we would have been represented well. LOL
On a serious note, not sure staff has the current luxury of not recruiting with 10 ships to give in next 2 classes.

Coach was interviewed about recruiting before the season started and said he will be very selective with his recruiting. I will reserve judgment until later on as to whether he meant he will only recruit high level talent that fills a need, or it means he has no one for 2014-2015.

That may be true for highly rated recruits. Why can't we get a 3 star recruit,4 year player and develop him.We know Gift,Sampson,Marco will be gone and I wouldnt be surprised to see at least 1 transfer.

Where is Sampson going?
