Where is our coach today?????

Berry missed out on the NBA more because he was all left hand and no right, rather than any defensive deficiency.

From the NY Times article cited above:

"At 6-8, Berry has been a far cry from the dominant offensive player he was at St. John's. A left-hander, Berry has never learned to shoot well right-handed or to drive effectively to his right. His jump shot is erratic, and once he begins a move to the basket, he rarely passes. He is often caught in the air with no place to go, leading to either a bad shot or a turnover. But Reed was most upset with Berry's defense and concentration."

Funny how the above describes a couple of our current players as well.

Reed benched and then cut Berry. Maybe this explains why more than a couple of players have spent considerable time on the bench this season.

Huge tournament taking place in our backyard and according to Jeff Borzello on twitter we had no representation at the tournament. Especially when somebody we are supposedly recruiting is playing Mr. Diallo. I have not seen any recruits behind the bench for the most part and according to Braziller from the post he has not heard anything at all for us on recruiting. I am extremely concerned that we have nothing coming up and if guys leave we are screwed. You hear today that the whole Providence staff is in town for the game, alford is in from UCLA but where is our staff. No where. As i read earlier probably out watching football and drinking wine.

We are mired in a 1-5 slump. I think the staff has higher priorities than attending a single basketball tournament. Lavin's M.O. is to not waste time on guys he doesn't feel he has a good chance with. That stance has been applauded by dozens on this board during better times. The last thing we should be questioning is the coach's recruiting. He has landed top recruits every year at two different schools as a head coach.

Maybe he has something lined up that we don't know about? A JUCO or transfer or two? Maybe Whitesell has a kid from St. Louis wanting to change scenery or maybe they spotted a kid on the European tour? There is not a lot of inside information under Lavin, especially since Chiles was given a gag order.
The last two seasons Lavin has come under attack for his lack of early recruiting results. Both years he delivered top 100 talents in the spring. He needs this team to win now. That is the best recruiting effort he can have and this upcoming game against SH is damn near do or die for this season. We HAVE to win the remaining three combined games against SH and Depaul

So you now think that Lav has called for a "all hands on deck" for his assistants at practices to give the players something they did not get before the losing streak?? LOL!
You also think the Lavin's M.O. is to not waste time on guys he feels he has a good chance with. A GOOD CHANCE?? So now you reduce our recruiting efforts and strategy to CHANCE?
The Hall game is near "do or die"? I think that was the Providence game! O and 5 start pretty much killed any at-large bid "chance". This team is fighting to get to a winning record to get to the NIT. THE NIT!!!!!!
THAT reality is the main reason why the staff, interns, special advisors should be as visible as ever at local gyms. NOTHING, nada is a good chance any longer and every recruit is belong fought over by dozens of programs.
I, like a few others here, have wondered if there is a different agenda now in recruiting and think back to the year Lav took the the year off from coaching to focus on recruiting and was all over America while missing every practice by players he recruited. Yet now you think he thinks practices are a must, even for his top recruiting assistant.
IMO, the MO you propose does not fit Lav's profile.

Is this post a series of haikus? I can't even read it, but, fortunately for me, I only have to see the author to get the summary.

Thank you for the compliment! You are not the first to compare my words of wisdom to poetry! I am sorry you had a difficult time reading it but that is what happens when I hang out with Usguard too much. I am pretty sure you got the message (in summary form of course) and I quite enjoy your recent double talk defense of Lavin's secret strategy such as your magical explanation of our top secret recruiting methods this season. The gag order was one of your best to date. But if you think that by chance or magic something is going to happen I think you should at least begin your missives with Hocus Pocus.

" Hocus pocus, tontus talontus, vade celeriter jubeo, a dark composure of words, to blinde the eyes of the beholders, to make his Trick pass the more currently without discovery, because when the eye and the ear of the beholder are both earnestly busied, the Trick is not so easily discovered, nor the Imposture discerned. :silly: "

Listen just to set the record straight ,I did not or would not hang out with class of 72

I find it amazing that we are not hearing about Lavin pounding the recruiting trail. Clearly, considering our circumstance, we should be feverishly working to bring in some talent for next year. Yet, all I hear about is Lavin and his TV gig.

At this rate, here are our five scholarships for next year...........

Khadim Ndaiye
Tyler Walston
David Lipscomb
Sam Sealy
Joey Delarosa

You find it amazing? Read the post above this and what I said 2 months ago. Usguard should have been hanging on every word. Lol.

Article yesterday evening in the Daily News about Delarosa, including this:

"St. John’s — once high up on his list but a no-show at the state Federation tournament in Albany when the Royals won a second straight title last weekend — has now slipped behind the others, the 18-year-old said.

Asked if it bothered him that St. John’s didn’t bother to venture to the state tournament to watch his crowning moment, Delarosa — who had 6 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in the final win over Long Island Lutheran, said: “Not really. I mean, I didn’t take it personally. You don’t know why a school couldn’t be there. But they’re still on my list of schools that I’m considering.”

In fairness, this kid sounds in the article like he's begging for more attention. Could be a ploy to make his decision to come to St John's all the more "newsworthy."

Delarosa was named to the Jordan Brand Classic's Regional Game.

Seton Hall has 4 of their incoming recruits in the game. They have a stacked class coming in. So nice to see. :furious:

It's one thing to say "I'm still undecided", yet another to say "they've slipped behind the others". Especially considering his brother is here. But as has been stated before, we're talking about an 18 year old kid. So it would be foolish of us to hang on his every word.

Hey monte..... no one should expect Lavin or his assistants to drive two and a half hours to Albany to watch a prospect play since they are scarce at New York metro area high school and AAU games.

Lets hope that the Lavin supporters are correct and he has a group of surprise high level recruits waiting to announce they will enroll at StJohns.

If they had just asked me, I would have had my kid(a U of A student) represent them at the game :)

As, a "fan" of the program you should hope that is also the case.

Amazing how quick the swell for contract extension would be :)

MJ I cannot speak for Otis, but at his point in time I have the same feelings of despair at the state of this program as I did at the same juncture in Norm's tenure. Not saying we're not better off at the same juncture, I guess we are, but Norm also had a much bigger hole to dig out of. My feeling is that the best that we can hope moving forward under Lavin's leadership is relatively consistent mediocrity. And that is the "best" we can hope for IMO. So quite frankly it's hard for me to get excited about a couple of late "rabbits" that Lavin might pull out from his hat. Especially considering that he has shown no ability what so ever to find diamonds in the rough or serviceable talent at the JC level. Hell he's barely been able to find serviceable talent out of the top 100 ranked level kids he's brought in. Don't mean to be so negative, but I am so sick and tired of hearing "wait till next year(or the year after or the year after that...)" I aint no spring chicken and I've only got so many "next year's" left. OK maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but you get the point.

Otis, funny but Lavin wasn't at the Philly championships yet Jordan signed on. Stop worrying about every little game,.
It's ridiculous. No wonder John Thompson got sick and tired of kissing 17 and 18 year old fannies. I remember Rick Barnes when he
was an assistant sleeping in a station wagon outside a gym down south just so he could see a kid in the morning going to the gym.
It's kind of pathetic really. Soon they will be employees and they can be paid and we will see how that shakes out.

Lavin must know which school Adonis will choose. Therefore he will let things play out.....He reminds me of Wayne McKoy=bigger version

Just to review, we have FIVE available scholarships. Besides ADR (who says we have "fallen behind"), there is no indication that we are close to signing anyone.

Is there any chance Lavin and St. John's are engaged in negotiating a buyout?

I mean, we are not even mentioned as actively involved with anyone. Lavin and staff are seemingly not even attending high school games. It's like a work-stoppage. Considering our roster predicament, you would think our staff would be working like dogs.

I would say doing the same thing as when you have asked 20 other times.
