When Keita Returns

It looks like Keita traveled with the team (as per his Instagram) to Jersey, which is something LoVett didn’t do last year, fwiw.

I’m hoping Mullin pulled a Bill Bellicheck and he’s really been practicing the last 3 weeks... ;-)

Unless you have inside info concerning the injury and the kid's rehab, this post strikes me as a bit harsh and irresponsible.[/quote]

How is it irresponsible?
The kid had a minor surgery and was given a 4-6 period. 7 weeks later he hasn't even practiced. This isn't bull riding or even football. It's basketball and he plays center. I'd have to be in a wheelchair to miss a game like this and there are plenty of people who feel the same way. It makes him look soft. Sorry if you don't agree.

Totally agree with Boo. You guys are being harsh.
This is the time to heal and come back healthy for the full BEC season--not prematurely for 1 game and mix the next 10.

As a physical therapist, this actually angers me and shows how clueless you guys are when it comes to surgery and rehab.

Guys, give Keita a break for Christ's sake. We'd all like to see him play, but not until he is ready. The young man's health long term is just a bit more important than tomorrow's game.

Well as an athlete this angers me. We never told the trainer the full truth. That was an unwritten rule and understood by all. A physical therapist will let you recover indefinitely if you keep whining about pain.

Come on, conjecture is unproductive & inappropriate at this point. Hopefully he recovers soon in consultation with medical/training staff.

As I've said before, I've had this surgery, and every single one is different. In my case the orthopedic surgeon took care of the main tear, but also trimmed back multiple years that occurred overs years of playing on asphalt courts. Every test is different, inflammation post surgery is different, and even the amount of arthritis present is different. Cut the guy some slack- for me just walking without immense pain was the goal. I regained full strength and range of motion, thrilled for my age in that I could easily leg press my weight by the end of pt. Keita's bar is much higher as he has to run the floor and bang with 250lb plus giants.

One of my pt's was 24 and had torn his meniscus 6 times because he was predisposed and finally had to give up competitive sports.

And if he plays too soon and does more damage and is out for an even longer period of time, you will be the first one on this site complaining about how the kid is injury prone and how we should just move on from him. You are upset because you think he can help us now, but the moment he is no longer of value to the basketball program, you will write him off and not even think twice about it. You need to understand that these individuals are more than just St Johns basketball players...they are people who need to think about their short and long term future. If he doesn't feel well enough to play or practice, then so be it.

He is a 19/20 year old adult, so who the hell are you to judge him for the decisions he makes?

I can't believe some of what I am reading here. Fact is their is no such thing as a "minor" surgery unless of course its performed on someone else. You know, someone not named you.
Let's worry about the guys who are healthy and ready to play. Then let the medical professionals worry about the injured players.

My son is an Orthopedic Surgeon. I asked him if a 4- 6 week recovery time for a torn meniscus for a D1 basketball player to return to game action was realistic. He said, without knowing the extent of the tear, etc. that 4- 6 weeks would be “very ambitious, and probably several months if they operate on it”.

That’s good to know Otis. My only issue then is why put out the 4 - 6 week timeframe initially after the injury was first reported. Just say 8 - 10 weeks

Some of you guys are unreal, let’s see how fast you recover from surgery, any surgery is a big deal even if it is considered “minor”. Let the kid heal fully instead of rushing him back and losing him for the year. I think some are skeptical about injuries cause of the Lovett debacle last year , I am quite sure Keita is dying to get back out there.

Who said he turned his meniscus?

He has one pant leg rolled up and the other below his kneee. Presumably wearing a brace but I couldn’t tell. He didn’t seem to be limping at all and I take it as a good sign that he was out on the court shooting. Doubt he’ll play today but hopefully this portends good things for a prompt return.
