Westchester Community College issues-

@zsmart3: source says bc NJCAA rules, Thomas still has eligibility for another year at Westchester. 2 years NAIA and 1 year div.1.

@zsmart3: b/che was granted Hardship after suffering broken hand as a freshman, Thomas still has one year of eligibility remaining. Can return 2 WCC

Huh? So he goes back somewhere and then never comes back here in 2015 :) (I smell a Derwin Kitchen situation).

A big May addition is becoming a big October subtraction for St. John’s.

Keith Thomas, the high powered rebounder from Westchester Community College, “is almost certainly” ineligible to play for the Red Storm, a source told the Daily News. St. John’s has been looking into his academic transcript from Westchester following revelations that transcripts from players who came out of WCC were changed so they would be eligible for NCAA participation.

Could the University file a lawsuit against WCC and also Thomas? I'm not sure what exactly for, but if this is all true, it seems as if both WCC and Thomas screwed SJU, and they knowingly did so.

Assuming that your question had merit, and it doesn't, what ahtlete on this planet could consider a university that sues it's recruits?

He's not going anywhere if he was committing fraud. If he was truly in the dark about the fact that he was ineligible then it's another matter. But how could he not know that he was ineligible?

Exactly

Just hate the way this reflects on our program, regardless of whether or not we did know or should have known, If this was Cuse, or uconn or Cal we would be crucifying them.

On this point I agree 100%

I am confused by Lavin's comments below. Why are we providing moral support to Thomas? Is he saying that Thomas is being treated unfairly here?

QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2014) - Keith Thomas has been ruled academically ineligible to compete for the St. John's men's basketball team during the 2014-15 season. The University has learned that Thomas does not meet the academic standards required by the NCAA for transfers.

"Academic integrity is treated very seriously at St. John's University and we are committed to maintaining high academic standards for all of our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Chris Monasch. "Our athletic compliance office recently became aware of information that triggered an additional review of Thomas' academic credentials at Westchester Community College. Our assessment and decision are in accordance with University and NCAA policies."

"We share Keith's disappointment and as a basketball family will provide moral support during this challenging time in his life. Keith clearly has a bright future in basketball and is determined to ultimately further his education," said head coach Steve Lavin.

Thomas was a 2013-14 NJCAA All-American honorable mention at Westchester Community College. The 6-foot-8 forward from Mount Vernon, N.Y. led all Division I junior college players with 15.7 rebounds per game and averaged 15.3 points in 32 appearances.

Its Lavin-speak, I wouldn't read in to it to much.

I'm not sure how many of you work in marketing or PR but Lavin never said any of that. He approved it and might have directed it but he didn't outright say it.

I thought the press release seemed to indicate that while Lavin was offering moral support a scholarship was no longer on the table. Did anyone else read it as such? I also thought the indications were he was no longer going to be enrolled at STJ.

The fact that Lavin (or the PR team, as you say, but surely Lavin signed off) mentioned that SJU would provide moral support to Thomas indicates that SJU believes Thomas did nothing wrong. I find that hard to believe, personally. This wasn't a 17-year-old high school kid. It was a 23-year who's been around the block a few times. How could he not know that his credentials were inflated?

How could he not know? Let's not be naïve about this. Many of these kids have been waltzed through school with inflated grades their entire lives. This was just one more stop on the train to big time college basketball and beyond. If you vacated the wins of any kid who ever received a grade he truly did not deserve, just about every net that was ever cut down would have to be returned.

Not that it matters, but I wonder how he is doing in school. Does he retain his academic eligibility. If the kid really struggles academically, maybe he uses this year to study hard, get decent grades, and become eligible next season. Is that possible?

Yeah, but there's a difference between a professor giving a kid a higher grade than he deserves and a kid doctoring his transcript. Or permitting his transcript to be doctored.

If they were fabricated, like Walker's, he would have to have known. No one is that naive. If they were inflated or doctored he may not have known, but I'm skeptical.

he never earned the grades to get into school. Even if he paid his way he would have to go back to a JC I would assume.

Unreal. This kid was 90% of the reason why I thought we'd be much better this season. Losing Sanchez and Sampson no lo longer is addition by subtraction...it's just subtraction.

Is it too much to ask for St. John's fans to get one season without this garbage?
