@West Virginia, Fri., Dec. 1, 7p, ESPN-2

Slazinski wasn’t staying once Ledlum came aboard. He wanted starter minutes and knew he wasn’t going to get them so he went somewhere where he knew he would. There was never going to be a 50/50 split or any other split with Ledlum.

The bench was virtually non-existent tonight. Other nights it might not be. Some of us tend to be very quick to judge how things are going to go based on one or a couple of games. I will use Ledlum as a recent example.

Coach felt the team was deep enough that he played 11 guys tonight in a game that was back and forth practically all night. Some out of necessity (he actually used four guys at the point due foul trouble and ineffectiveness). Once all is said and done, he will settle on an 8-9 man rotation as most teams use with the rest standing/sitting at the ready.
One thing that is interesting is that this team has a bunch of parts that add value. Daniss can't score, Ledlum does. Alleyne gets his chance and puts up numbers off the bench. It's definitely good in a game like today's

It was nice to get the win. Regardless of the refs we fouled way too much. We need Dingle to score more. I felt Alleyne saved us at the end. Good games by Ledlum and Soriano.
Without Luis I think games like BC and Hofstra won't be easy. The Xavier and UCONN games will take a lot to get a win. Hopefully he is back for Butler. The problem is whenever he gets back it's going to take a while to reintegrate him. I really want to make the NCAA's but it's going to be tough.
With the interchangeable parts on this team I am not sure we need Dingle to score. We might. But with kids like Alleyne on the bench, we might not

I am on record, for good or bad, that he will be our second or third best player by years end. Great defender who can shoot the three on a team that needs both.
Who is going to pass him the ball though?

Jenkins is shooting 28% from 3. He’s also only averaging 1.2 FT attempts per game which is completely staggering for a slashing guard. I don’t even know how that’s possible.

He came into the game averaging 4 turnovers and thankfully only played 21 minutes tonight so he couldn’t pad those #s. He threw a pass off of the BACK of the glass tonight after he wasn’t called for a travel where the ball was literally st his chin.

The blind spot Pitino has for him is completely baffling. The worst part is be could be useful if he was used correctly.

Shout out to the board for helping me finalize the selection of the very prestigious 2023/2024 CarmineAbbatiello MFP, most favorite player, award. As you know, past winners read like a virtual who's who of all time Johnny greats including: Avery "3 point record holder" Patterson, Paris "Hilton" Horne and Phil "any shape but a circle" Greene. The competition was particularly fierce this season and it was extremely difficult to choose from so many worthy candidates. Envelope and drumroll please...and the winner is...Daniss Jenkins!!!

Why isn’t Alleyen starting??????

Why play the white boy at all in a game like this? I know freshman, experience et all and maybe he'll become more Mullin than Lyson someday, but he should be getting his feet wet only in 46 point alumni blowouts and hopefully against Sacred Heart and the like. If you absolutely must play a white kid...then go with the other one. While neither appear Big East ready skillwise, at least Conway has a body that doesn't seem so overmatched.
Hey Carmine, I don't think this was your intention, but your post reads like it was written in the 1960s. Back then, when the Knicks traded for Dave DeBusschere, he was the only white player on the Pistons. To complete the deal for Walt Bellamy, the Knicks were asked to throw in Howard "Butch" Komives. Even as a preteen, I was shocked then and I don't think your intention was to separate our players by race. I met you in Charleston, you're a great guy, but i hope the mods take this post down. We are all better than that.

That post imho was derogatory and unnecessary - thanks Beast.

Much, much better than a loss but one thing that had me apoplectic was the insistence by defenders, especially the guards to defend “the ball” rather than the player; constantly getting off balance with their weight forward lunging at the ball or diving to steal passes that were low percentage gambles. All those things do is break down the team defense, allowing easy penetration. The only stat generally more overrated than steals are blocked shots. Neither are bad unto themselves but they are when they are treated as the goal as opposed to happening within the context of good fundamental team defense.
Big kudos to the ”2nd team” who I thought completely changed the lackluster energy level the starters began the game with when they came in. Look at bench points but that is not the end all and be all of contributions. And yes, I am including Wilcher and Dunlap in that praise. They got SJU involved in the rock fight the game was as opposed to the “let’s win it on offense” attitude the starters began the game with.
Finally, very surprised Pitino did not go zone but I am confident he certainly knows better than I and he got his “teaching moment” and the W, which is obviously the best of both worlds.
