@West Virginia, Fri., Dec. 1, 7p, ESPN-2

Wow over 40 pages already on a win but I will add the unpleasantries are abound even in the win so it makes sense now.

I see it as we won a game we probably should have lost on the road so I’m gonna enjoy this as much if not more than other wins. Team will continue to learn from it and move on to prettier wins.

Need to get guard thing sorted out.
At Iona the offense ran through Clayton. Jenkins was not the primary ball handler. I am not sure that Dingle can fill that role but would like to find out before BE starts.
If we are going to make the tournament, Dingle will have to be much more involved.

I have to find the video of one of Rick's defensive instructional series, but in it Rick says "play the man, see the ball" is backwards. He teaches defenders to always play the ball and position yourself based on where the ball is, and always see your man.

I love watching his videos. I feel like I took basketball 101 and 102 years ago but his vids have pre reqs andcare advanced.

I was pissed at how poorly we played, but Rick was confident we would win and as such gave prime time mins again to second string. All strategic, getting ready for tough conference.

Much, much better than a loss but one thing that had me apoplectic was the insistence by defenders, especially the guards to defend “the ball” rather than the player; constantly getting off balance with their weight forward lunging at the ball or diving to steal passes that were low percentage gambles. All those things do is break down the team defense, allowing easy penetration. The only stat generally more overrated than steals are blocked shots. Neither are bad unto themselves but they are when they are treated as the goal as opposed to happening within the context of good fundamental team defense.
Big kudos to the ”2nd team” who I thought completely changed the lackluster energy level the starters began the game with when they came in. Look at bench points but that is not the end all and be all of contributions. And yes, I am including Wilcher and Dunlap in that praise. They got SJU involved in the rock fight the game was as opposed to the “let’s win it on offense” attitude the starters began the game with.
Finally, very surprised Pitino did not go zone but I am confident he certainly knows better than I and he got his “teaching moment” and the W, which is obviously the best of both worlds.
Great post…repeatedly screamed at the TV when they would “overguard” to the point where they couldn’t help but foul and take chances that led to regular breakdowns of the defense.

Anything that can be said has already been said in the thread. But, I recall thinking during and after the game how there were so many moments when we had an opportunity to separate ourselves - but would either take a poor shot or put them on the line. I’m confident that RP will take care of this over time but believe we’ll also need a leader on the court who recognizes these separation opportunities and leads his teammates.

In fairness, you throw a bunch of new players together and it can take a little time for someone to be comfortable enough to take the lead. Was expecting that to be DJ and/or JD but right now the only one that seems ready to be a leader (outside of Soriano) is Alleyne. Hopefully, others will rise to the challenges over the next 5 games.

The talent is just not there to be a great defensive team. They might be able to get to good, but very good or great won’t happen this year.

Alleyne is very good to elite on defense.

Taylor is good.

Jenkins is good defending the 2 and 3 and then there is a cliff.

Zuby and Wilcher have the talent to be elite with more experience and when they learn to stop fouling with their hands.

Soriano, Ledlum, and Dingle ceilings are probably “okay” defensively.
I am just hopping for good as I agree great is not going to happen. I think Joel has come a long way both offensively and defensively.

I am fine with the young kids getting time…he recognizes need to strike balance between win now and sustained success annd isn’t afraid to do things have long term benefits but may not pay immediate benefits.

Who is going to pass him the ball though?

Jenkins is shooting 28% from 3. He’s also only averaging 1.2 FT attempts per game which is completely staggering for a slashing guard. I don’t even know how that’s possible.

He came into the game averaging 4 turnovers and thankfully only played 21 minutes tonight so he couldn’t pad those #s. He threw a pass off of the BACK of the glass tonight after he wasn’t called for a travel where the ball was literally st his chin.

The blind spot Pitino has for him is completely baffling. The worst part is be could be useful if he was used correctly.
In the press conference after the game, Pitino called Jenkins one of our best defenders. Not sure I agree. Alleyne was the other one he mentioned (I agree with that one).

Jenkins might be trying to do too much and will get better once he really understands his role and the abilities of his teammates.

During the game last night the announcer said CRP, one of the greatest basketball minds of the last 4 decades, told him Jenkins is a future pro, and even if it is in Europe, it is major compliment

And yet the guy gets slammed here every game thread. SMFH.

Don’t listen to the noise DJ. Glad to have you here!!!

Let’s not pretend FS1 never preempted us for nascar.
I don’t recall that happening but I am sure you are right. NASCAR brings more viewers to FS1 than our game would but that still sucks.

In total honesty, he did not have a good game last night. I think he will be fine in the long run.

If you can find any old videos with Al Lobalbo. You should view them. Coach Lobalbo was at St. John’s as an Assistant from 81 -95(?) after being let go from FDU where his teams always ranked near the top defensively and his defensive principles were revered and used by Coach Carnesecca, Bob Knight, Coach K and many others. He had a similar phrase (see man, ball and jump to the ball).

They won and covered, which indicates they slightly beat the expectations of the worlds sports investing community. The refs called things ridiculously tight which destroyed any chance of a flow to the game. When you play any team on the road and they shoot over 40 foul shots, I would think that’s a loss. Yet they won.

They have a problem stopping the ball, which is leading to fouls, and the risk/reward on the pressure defense doesn‘t always show per possession. At best, right now, it’s okay. At best. But West Virginia was exhausted by game end, as was Utah, and last night with a foul called on every play that exhaustion showed mostly in a tired West Virginia team missing foul shots.

Survive and advance is always a good outcome, no matter how it’s accomplished.

We don't have a true point guard on this team, which we're not used to. Going back to Looie's days, the Johnnies were always built with a good point guard. We don't have one, so we have to mix and match a little.

Jenkins can get to the rim when we need offense - very few others on this team can. (I thought Dingle would give us more of that, but so far he hasn't.) Personally, I think we need him on the floor. He's starting to distribute more, although he still plays hero ball too much for my liking.

As I said, Dingle is the guy I'm worried about. Sometimes you barely know he's on the floor. We need a lot more from him, or Alleyne needs some of his minutes. And I'm glad Wilcher got some extended minutes in prime time. Let him get his feet wet. He's not Erick Barkley, who was an elite PG as soon as he put on the uniform. Wilcher will need some time to come into his own.

Ledlum impressed me last night. Showed some quickness and plenty of hops. He's probably better than I thought. Happy to be wrong about that.

Taylor needs to be a little more selfish on offense. He needs to look for his shot.

But take the road win against a Power 5 team.

I think getting Dunlap and Wilcher ten minutes in last night's game, even if not by design due to foul trouble, was great. Sure, they didn't look very good (Dunlap especially), but they definitely need minutes in real, meaningful, and intense games to learn. It would've frustrated me a lot more if Conway (0) and Traore (4) took up those minutes, but they didn't.

Also, for all the grief we rightfully gave the refs, Jessie Edwards fouling out is more consequential than anything the refs did to us.

Nice Sec 3 -
to emphasize your key point
it: takes time to meld or mesh two returning players with nine or 10 newcomers. Perhaps it will take this entire year to get Rick Pitino and his program established.
Hopefully while he’s doing that we have a winning record and make the tournament. But the time is not the first few days of December, 2023. Unlike the Chambers Brothers circa 1960s great imo hit
“Time Has Come Today”
Not today.
Maybe in 2024 😉
