Welcome back Julian!

I'm hoping whether he returns for another year or not Julian does what is best for him because that is all that matters.

We have a terrible history or being "lucky" in having athletes on the bubble return back for another year. I'm hoping we get lucky!
Can still hope that we get lucky.

For selfish reasons yes.  But again that is our own selfish concerns, Julian owes us nothing.  He owes himself and his family everything.  That is all that matters.

Pretty much been in the camp of  "Hope he comes back, plan for the opposite."

As someone stated here before (probably on this thread), "Walter Berry was coming back until he wasn't."

Wasn't suggesting that he owes us anything (that's your opinion), only suggesting that I hope he come back. For my "personal" reasons I don't think he's ready, but I'm not the one to make that decision. Just relax and don't read into every post.

Yes it will be terrible if he nooses not to return, but that’s basketball good team and good coaches survuve

Once upon a time, high school basketball players went to college dreaming of playing in the NCAA tournament and even winning a few games or, for some, winning a national championship. That all changed with the ability to make a nice living playing basketball almost anywhere around the globe. If Penny's dream is the NBA, which is not a far-fetched one, he needs to stay another year and show even further development. If he leaves now, he will be a longshot to make an NBA roster right away. He will get paid somewhere, which is a big temptation. This talk of doing what is best for him, while nice, by no means indicates he will do what is really best for him. One would need a crystal ball to know that. Based on the available information, a projected second round pick is nothing more than an educated guess.

Look we have had so many ups and downs over the yrs,we can take  whatever comes our way. The team has character. If he chooses not to return,we will wish him well. I like the coach and staff and the players they have assembled,I know we all stand by this team no matter what’s happens always look ahead not back

I don’t know whether or not the team has character since, if Champagnie leaves, only two players would return.  I do think that without Champagnie, from a talent perspective, I don’t like our chances of dancing.  For me personally, in year three of the CMA era, failure to dance would be a disappointment.

I still think he's coming back. And I'm not sure I see anything that has changed that would make me feel otherwise. His brother was always the better NBA prospect at this point in time.

Champ has done a great job of representing SJU.  He's not a finished product at this stage.  I think that by returning for his "junior" year he can increase his skills and thus his value.  I think that that is what is best for him and SJU.

Hey there usguard... none of that Greg McDermott typo error stuff...mistaking a "ch" for an "n".. We're a diverse and inclusive group here.

After Mark Emmert's statement on Saturday maybe Julian will have to consider the proposal to pay athletes for use of name, image and likeness.  Maybe he can "afford" to stay in school.  NYC is a good place for an athlete to market themselves.  Surprised no mention by anyone on Emmert's comments yet.

I look at it this way. It is better to “lose” a player to the draft. than to a transfer.

No mention because NIL is a mess even worse than the transfer portal at this stage still

Agreed.  The problem is what he thinks is best for him now might not look like the best option in hindsight a few years down the road.

That maybe true.  But let's all agree outside of being fans we have zero skin in the game so to speak.

My larger point is we should never substitute our own judgement for that of the actual player.  If he comes back and gets injured or whatever we don't pay that price he does.

If you are a cap-strapped team picking close to end of second round, do you stick with the 37-year-old on your bench, or do you try to see if you can develop someone like Julian and get him on the cheap? He gives you offensive pop off the bench and can develop all other aspects of his game while being paid.

I'm starting to think he's gone whether we like it or not.

Just for context.....

In the 2020 NBA Draft, Isaiah Joe (Arkansas) was selected 49th overall by the 76ers (this is the 2nd round's 19th pick).  Joe signed a contract that include 2.4 million in guaranteed money.  Players selected any lower than this ultimately signed contracts with much less guaranteed money (800K - 900K).

Bottom line, a kid being told he may be picked early in the 2nd round, is probably not leaving that money on the table.  If you're being told late 2nd round, returning to college and trying to move up, could be a sound choice.

Where is this speculation about Julian getting drafted even coming from? He has not once been listed on any mock drafts, nor has he even been listed on the NBADraft.net Top 100 board. To me it remains to be seen if he will even be offered an invite to the draft combine, which seems doubtful.

This is not wishful thinking on my part, I'm just presenting facts. Could a random team take him late in the 2nd round? Of course. But from everything I've seen and read that seems like an absolute long shot. And Julian does not seem like the type of kid to make a decision based on a long shot.

I'm not saying he is guaranteed to improve his draft stock by returning. But I'm still not convinced he's leaving.

Second round picks are not guaranteed anything send there is no scale like the first round, which is guaranteed. All second round picks are guaranteed is NBA minimum wage (still a lot at $800k+) if they sign. Isaiah Joe with the 49 pick made more than the 3rd overall pick of the second round.  A lot get stuck overseas or on two way contracts.
