Welcome back Julian!

He is a smart kid, I am sure he will make the right decision, he is not getting drafted at this time and it would not be a wise move to risk the opportunity he has to increase his stock value another season.

How many of you thought Harkless was coming back? I did.

I'm actually going to assume Champagnie is not returning and will pleasantly surprised if he does.

Well if I'm remembering correctly, Harkless was a projected first round pick. So for me that wasn't a surprise. The one that bothered me was JaKarr Sampson, who left and wasn't even projected to get drafted (and eventually wasn't drafted, but has had a nice NBA career). I guess you can say the same for Ponds who didn't get drafted, but we all knew he was a goner.

I think it's a very slim chance Julian stays in the draft.  My rule of thumb in these situations is always follow the signs, they'll lead you in the right direction more times than not.

Sign #1 - He mentioned leaving the option to return to St. John's a couple times in his letter announcing he's testing the draft process.  Most guys that have their mind set on leaving usually keep it short and don't really mention the school that much, outside of thanking them for the opportunity. See LJ's letter for comparision.

Sign #2 - CMA was overly supportive of his decision to test the draft waters and sounded fairly confident he's returning in his statement. Again compare his statements with LJ's.

Sign #3 - This is probably the biggest sign.  He helped in the recruitment on Soriano.  Guys that are leaving are worried about getting ready for the draft and focused on training and all that, they aren't spending time helping a staff land a guy.

Sign #4 - He didn't even sign a NCAA certified agent - guys that are truly on the fence usually hire a NCAA certified agent to help with the process.  The overwhelming amount of guys that don't sign with any type of agent come back.

Sign #5 - All promotions for next year, season tickets, highlight tapes, etc. have all featured pictures of Julian.

Sign #6 - All the SJU media people have been pretty consistent in believing he'll be back, plus Julian has even been arguing with Zach and a few fans about guys transferring and all that, a guy that's worried about the draft, is not arguing with beat writers and fans about guys transferring.

I'm getting the feeling that you do, but also that you don't understand how the process works, so there's that.

You can’t test the waters if you don’t get your feet wet!

Thinking if JC doesn't get picked in this week's NFL draft that that will signal his return to St. John's. /media/kunena/emoticons/silly.png

After the Duke game that year in Cameron, and a few other ridiculous performances, I was pretty confident Harkless was gone.  He started showing up on mock first round drafts, and as the year progressed, was trending closer to the lottery (think he got selected ultimately right around the lottery range).  My rule of thumb is that if a kid is a lock first round pick (especially near the lottery/mid-first round), consider him gone.  If a kid is a lock second round pick, it depends, and if he is perhaps not even likely to get drafted, it trends closer to him returning (this is where I think Champ is likely, as it seems he most probably would not get drafted).  Class year plays a role too in this, IMO, because a sophomore that can improve his stock from a possible (but not guaranteed) second round selection is more likely to return than a junior in that position (see Ponds).  Smart for him to go through the process and I hope he makes the best decision for himself and his family.

Looks like Justin signed with Live Sports Agency, which has NCAA approved agents, so leaves that back door option of maintaining eligibility. Even though it shows Justin is all in on trying to get drafted.

I'm no insider but I close to someone who knows Julian well. Apparently he's more likely to enter the draft than not at this point. He's been told that he's likely to go in the second round. He's a kid and thus he could have changed his mind already. I hope he does but at this point it seems unlikely that he'll be back.

per Draft Express

Pitt sophomore Justin Champagnie's college career is over, his agent Todd Ramasar confirms to ESPN. He'll be keeping his name in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Tough couple of days for Jeff Capel at Pitt.  Seemed poised to land 5 star C Efton Reid yesterday before L$U swooped in and got him and now Justin definitely leaving.
