Undersized ... Centers …. Player comparisons past and present

Please clarify, are you saying McKoy was the starting center Wennington’s freshman and sophomore years at St. John’s? McKoy was gone Wennington’s freshman year and Jeff Allen was here along with Trevor Jackson.
I was referring to Trevor Jackson as someone mentioned as an undersized center. Trevor was at St John's from 1980 to 1983, and he played behind McKoy in 80 and 81 and Wennington in 82 and 83. Hopefully that clears it up.

Funny thing about Wayne McKoy. He was an undersized college center at 6ft 9in and was a giant at that same size as a high school sophomore.
The Long island press was reporting about Wayne McKoy's basketball prowess since he was 10 or so and playing for Elmcor. You know, stuff like 6'3" Wayne McKoy scored 36 points with 22 rebounds, etc etc.

He was annointed at a young age to be the crown prince of NYC centers in the lineage of Alcindor, Elmore, and others, destined for NBA stardom. He stopped growing at maybe 13 or 14 and 6'8" but still was heralded playing alongside Reggie Carter at Lutheran.

Side note: Looie hired Willis Reed to be Wayne McKoy's coach on playing center. I think that lasted one season.

Side note 2: Reed's sju connection was that his roommate on the Knicks was rookie Mel Davis.

He started pretty much the whole season (27 games) I just don’t believe he was playing the center role over Brownlee in that group.
My recollection is that although not explicitly publicly stated, Lavin promised Polee he would be a starter if he came here. I believe that rather than renege on that promise, he started Polee, but he was the first subbed out. He was largely ineffective as a freshman but actually did pretty well 4 years later against us as a starter for San Diego State (where he had transferred) in our first round NCAA game.

Wayne McCoy was one of my first favorite players growing up. I definitely recall that he was heralded and projected to be a 7 footer. But, as noted, he stopped growing as a teen.

Another guy who received the same hype (not StJ) was Timmy Kempton from St. Dom's in Oyster Bay, who I distinctly remember reading articles about that analyzed the spacing between his bones on x-rays as a teen, and projecting him to be over 7 foot when he was done growing. Of course, he stopped at around 6'8" but still went on to have a decent college career at Notre Dame.

Trevor was a real good guy who worked hard on and off the court. Went into finance after he graduated.

Or Tim Doyle
Tim Doyle never got much playing time from Jarvis as I recall or , was it Norm?
Tim , a local kid from Manhasset soon transferred to Northwestern , where he clearly was the best player on that team .
In 2007 i went to the Big 10 Conference Tournament in Chicago and saw Tim play in a first round game .
Northwestern lost to a forgotten opponent , but he was the best player on the Court that day.

As for Dunlap , remember he was a top recruit for Notre Dame but , opted out when Mike Brey was replaced as Coach of the Irish .
The other thing to consider is this . In the Transfer Portal Era with NIL money on the table , recruiting for players has changed dramatically .
The focus is mainly getting upper class players who have excelled elsewhere and paying them to come here . Most of those players don’t care if they are transferring to St John ‘s or St Olaf’s, if the $$$ is there .

I think Dunlap came here to be a 4 year player under Pitino and be the Shooter that Teams need these days .
Also too, and we see this to a lesser extent with Wilcher , is that Pitino with the addition of Richmond and Smith has essentially recruited over Sim. Wilcher is getting decent playing time but, under the prior to NIL days , he would likely be the starting PG/ SG and be the top focus of the team along side RJ .
Dunlap isn’t likely to be All BE anytime soon but , by his 3 rd and 4 th year still could be the spot up shooter we will need .
Dumping on him now might be in vogue but , it’s clear Pitino isn’t tossing him overboard . Even , if some fans are .

I don't think many are tossing him overboard. Just opining on how he's performed so far. I think he will be a fine player here, with a limited role, if he stays. But your point about recruiting and being recruited over is what leads to me to be concerned about guys like Glover and Wilcher in particular, if they do not see enough PT. Look at Zuby, who was recruited over at Kansas, and came here and is now excelling for us.

interesting contrasting the current era with Lou's rotations. Broadnax, Elander, Hempel, Shurina, Cornegy et al would have been Redmen for about 10 minutes.

I like Brady, and hope things go well for him here.

I don't remember Tim Boyle excelling so well for Northwestern, but, what I do know is, he has a severely disabled son who is the light of his life. I follow him on "X" and he is a local sports media guy in Chicago. His devotion to his son makes him Michael Jordan in my book.
