Undersized ... Centers …. Player comparisons past and present

The Marquette game at CA was one of the best performances by a Johnnie that I have ever seen
It was insane. At one point when double teams didn't work Wojo threw a triple team at him and Ponds scored anyway. I was not a big fan of either Howard or Wojo's Howard-centric approach which cost him the Hauser Brothers (and rightly so).

Anyway - on to Omaha!

The Howard of M’Q v Ponds games were tremendous battles. Ponds when he left SJU was not in optimal shape as he sought pro $. That said he was very good here and fun to watch.
Completely agree, but any comparison of Shamorie to Chris Mullin is absolutely nuts. Chris got everything out of his talent, Shamorie not even close. There is a reason one guy played 15 years or so in the NBA and it is not about height. Witness guys like Brunson, Van Fleet Alvarado etc.

Really is a shame…physical attributes are something he couldn’t change, but he had more talent than a lot of guys who made it…in fact, a number of guys that couldn’t defend him (e.g. Divincenzo…who has turned into a better pro than I thought he would be).

NC Johnnie , did I miss a post where someone compared Ponds to Mullin ?
That’s outlandish . Shamorie was a great player for us but , Mullin first and then , Berry are in a whole different category .
Ponds did have some Super Games after Lovett left but , the 2 together would have been a show in itself .
I did think Ponds was the better player but , they did different things and complimented each others game .
The 2 of them embarrassed Syracuse at the Dome , I recall . A 33 point blow out for us .

It is an unfair comparison to compare RJ to Zendon. Zen almost averaged a double double in his career. Despite the criticism by some, he is one of the top players ever to play here. He was definitely a guy who was offensively minded and was not a big assist guy by any means (LOL) but he was a terrific player and much more heady than RJ.
I was a huge Zendon Hamilton fan but to be fair he averaged 0.5 assists per game during his St. John's career. R.J. Luis is a work in progress but this season is averaging a career high 2.5 assists per game. He looks for other players in a way that Zendon never did. R.J. had 7 assists in the New Mexico game. He is a pretty decent passer.

When the ball went in to Zendon (typically on the blocks) he went to the basket with ferocity and either scored, drew fouls or followed up his missed shot by getting offenive rebounds.

R. J. is a different type of player than Zendon but I will say that they both have an offensive tenancity about them.

"Offensive tenacity" will be my new euphemism for "F you, I have the ball and I'm not giving it up!" :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Who was the deeper black hole? Zendon or Walter?

"The reason for his redshirt is also irrelevant, as your contention was that nobody redshirts in the NIL era and then implied it was because Maker wasn’t good."

My contention is that 4 star players don't need to redshirt to get more playing time because all they need to do is transfer. And, yes, Vince is better right now. Glad you finally agree.
Both Maker and Vince need intense development but in the NIL era there are no guarantees that players buy into the lesson plan.
Vince rushes and forces everything because he is eager to make up for lost time.
If he starts playing more cerebral ball he will be fine at this level.....rather than playing for Iona. Maker is very mechanical and needs better conditioning.
Just hope they stay long enough to meet your expectations.😉😉😉
Maker is on another planet. If that is not immediately ascertainable to you, then you should find another sport to follow. This is like arguing if the sun will rise tomorrow. Let’s just wait and see the inevitable.

Nobody on this forum is higher on Maker than me, and I’ve been saying for a year that he will not contribute as a freshman. If there is even a 10% chance Maker plays a 5th season, redshirting him is worth it over getting 5 minutes a game now.

Marillac isn’t shy: Maker will win Big East Defensive Player of the Year and get drafted.

The difference between this year and last is huge. I agree, he needs to be looking to pass more, but you have to acknowledge real progress. He's finding his teammates. Last year, when he wasn't able to practice with them, he was just doing his own thing. Now that he knows where they will be, passing is a strong option for him. Haven't looked at the stats but I would guess that his assists per game have at least doubled.
He is definitely making progress. I only want to run onto the court and slap him like twice a game now. Last year it was 8 or 10 times per game.

I don't have a strong opinion, but for anyone who has fell behind on this thread, I can sum it up with the following two sentences:

Khaman Maker will be the BE Defensive Player of the Year and an NBA draft pick. If you cannot see this, then you need to find another sport to follow.

😆

Walter who???
Because if mean Berry. Didn’t want him passing to anyone when got ball down low.
Junior year averaged 23 on 60% shooting.
I know. Believe me, my intention was not to denigrate my all time 2nd favorite Johnny in any fashion. However, he does, along with Zendon, come to mind when I think of willing to pass challenged players. Hence the black hole question.
