Only SJU fans can we go from wondering last week whether there is so much talent coming to that Chris Jones should get kicked out the door to this week having so little talent that Malik Ellison is the default starting point guard.

Dave at JJ mentioned earlier about Lovett playing on an ex SJU defector team. Than elaborated in a later thread about Lovett going to all those HSs. If Ellison is as good of a PG as Dave says why isn't he playing PG?

If someone nods at Dave in the hallway he thinks they should be a Parade All American.

Because he's not as good as Dave says. This is the BE. You need to have a PG. Not some kid you think might be able to become a PG once you realize he's probably not a SG.

Our last two tournament appearances came with our starting lineup not including a true point guard and the only true point guards on the roster (Boothe/Branch) got limited minutes.

Dwight Hardy running the point was the least of our problems in 2011. If you have a dynamic scorer in there at the 1 (Hardy/Sheed) you can play at a high level. Especially if we start playing at the high tempo that Mullin wants to play at.

If Marcus is a goner I'd be a little perturbed and would want to know what his reason is.. if it's related to the program (and not personal) I'd want it nipped in the bud.so this doesn't happen again. Very disappointed to hear of this development, top 10 PG's are a commodity, that's why there are only 10 of them each year!!

Staff took a shot with Lovett. They knew the risks and it was worth a shot.

Why did Jordan leave? Omar Cook? 18 / 19 year old kids sometimes do stupid things or use logic that 40 year old people think is stupid. Doesn't make sense to me but I am not him.

Very likely you are right. And as it's been mentioned before we are in great shape for '17 and '18 recruiting. The problem is people like myself had us fast-tracked for very high levels of success in the 17-18 season. I think those expectations are naturally hampered a bit. And the 16-17 season was penciled as a potential NCAA bid in my eyes. This will be difficult if ML is not on the roster.

I don't think anyone w/o an agenda will blame Mullin if this does come to pass. He took a shot at getting a good player.

Now you could argue that we shouldn't have gotten involved in first place. But I am pretty sure the people making that argument would be the first to complain if we weren't bringing in better talent.

Well I disagree slightly. I think you can make the tournament without a true point guard, I think going deep into the tournament a true point guard is nessecary. Of course there are teams that don't have a true point guard and go deep, but I would be way more confident in our team to go far if we had a Lovett running the point instead of someone who isn't a point guard.

Seeing the teams who have won it all the last few years, you see names like Tyus Jones, Peyton Siva, Shabazz Napier, Kemba Walker, Ty Lawson. It just makes me believe that having guys like these are part of the formula for going all the way

Kemba was more in Hardy mold. In fact not playing the point really anymore. Have Lin starting with him now

Lovett hasn't left, but some posters are talking about him like Tommy talked about Spider after shooting him at the poker game. Tommy kept saying that Spider's was a rat bastard, and his whole family were rat bastards. Until there is an announcement, Lovett is one of ours. Yet posters are saying that we will be fine without him, that Ellison has more potential at the point, that Lovett has attachments issues, that we don't need a PG because we made the tourney a few times without one. etc. Meanwhile, the deepest we went in the tourney in the last 30 years we had very good point guards, 2 of whom made the NBA.

Lovett is a dynamic talent. I hope he stays. If he doesn't, the staff will work to replace him with a talented point. Mussini is not a pg. I see no sign of Ellison being one. Ponds is super talented, but he is more scorer than pg. The staff isn't trying to build a team that can make the dance, but one that can advance as well. Losing Lovett, if it happens, is a big blow, no matter how much we all want to rationalize that it isn't. Meanwhile, he still is a Johnnie.

I don't think anyone has blasted Lovett. If this becomes a reality I am sure some will though. At this point people I think are mostly showing disappointment. Bad rumors regarding ST John's basketball usually come true. Good rumors....not so much.

Blasted no, but dropping hints or downgrading his importance, yes. Yet a few weeks ago, many posted that we would be very competitive this year if he was only eligible. If he leaves, I will blame the NCAA for not granting him full eligibility this season, and agree with the poster that thinks someone associated with SJU picked up the strange looking clay idol at the construction site.

Doesn't make sense. Seems like he was anxious to get on the court this year., Cant see him sacrificing 1st semester next year and deferring PT. But, as mentioned, not everything these kids do make sense.

It would be strange but maybe not so much if you think of possible reasons not directly linked to playing basketball.

What would you say if he was thinking of transferring because the staff was letting him know they weren't sure if there is a place for him next year. This could be the case depending on who they are still trying to sign. This is a possibility. Nobody loves Mullin more than me but if it comes out that Lovett transfers because he is feeling pushed out the door I am wondering how that will change the perception. Will people stop instinctively bashing Lovett and criticize the staff for stabbing current players in the back while looking for better options? Just a thought.
