Transfers

He is allowed to pay tuition and join SJU, I wonder if that will be a consideration for him. But it is a disgrace that a graduating student is not given a blanket release outside his own conference.

Not trying to spend someone else's money, but I would think that Antoine's dad can afford to write the check, if he so desired

Most of these ex-nba guys are broke.

The rule is not about allowing to transfer. You can transfer anytime you want.

The graduate rule simply allows you to transfer WITHOUT having to sit out a year (the normal penalty you are given for transferring).

Maybe I didn't articulate it clearly enough, but that is exactly my point
This rule provides college athletes with the equivalent of free agency
If you see a better opportunity elsewhere, you can pick up and leave and play right away
And, you don't have to worry about the academics - you don't have to go to school at all after the first semester to stay eligible for the rest of that season
The NCAA makes it too easy for kids to transfer and rules like this and the "hardship" rule allow kids to play immediately, which is a mistake IMO
Recruiting is dirty enough already - I believe that these rules encourage even more underhanded recruiting and isn't good for college athletics
I'm a traditionalist - if you want to transfer, you should be required to sit out a year to get acclimated to your new school and surroundings before you can play

Reading between the lines there sounds like they could be pissed sju is being blocked. I doubt mason cares about buffalo etc.

Sounds like Niagara is also pissed because their coach left to go to Hofstra

@NYPost_Brazille: I'm told Niagara has given transfer Antoine Mason a permission to contact letter with no restrictions.

@NYPost_Brazille: That doesn't mean Niagara won't block schools for Antoine Mason, but at moment they aren't. Any school in country can recruit him.

I think the block was all about SJU. If you look at their OOC schedule from last year, the only high-major on it was Seton Hall. And they know Mason wants to go high major.

Go get him, Lavin. Don't want to see him go to Providence!

Hope we get involved. Definitely need another scorer.

When the Niagara coach left to go to Hofstra, he took some players with him

Tom I agree and have said he same in the past. The graduate thing is a loop hole being used by kids who sat out a year during their undergrad

Well in fact if you believe kids are pursuing actualy Master's degrees then there is a reason for this rule. If a kid has graduated while playing D1 ball it is assumed it's going to take him 4 years. The only way he would have any eligibility left would be if he sat a year due to redshirt or transfer. With the 5 to play 4 rule you can't let him sit a year at grad schoold and then play because it's then 6 to play 4 and it starts to affect undergrads saying "why can't we have 6 to play 4". If you take 12 credits per semester and change majors late then you could actually be a full time student who might take 6 years to graduate, even though you're in good academic standing. The undergrads would have a point, or at least manipulate the system to put themselves in a position to have a point.

BTW, J. Fortune, Providence guard is transferring.

Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter will visit Maryland on June 2, his former AAU coach, Winfred Jordan, told InsideMDSports.com.
Carter, a 6-foot-8, 247-pound power forward, is also considering St. John's, Kansas and South Carolina, Jordan said. The former McDonald's all-American, who averaged 11.4 points and 8.4 rebounds last season as a sophomore, recently visit St. John's.

Oy. Don't like this one bit.

Sure doesn't sound like he is reconsidering his transfer.

No, sure doesn't. Kansas is a new addition to the mix.

Considering that, before the St John's visit, his AAU coach said that he might not take any more visits if it went well, it doesn't look good for us

Why? He said Carter would "probably" take 2 more visits and this past week, 5/22-5/30, is a Dead Period which means no visits so he could not take any visits thru this Friday.

The 2nd and 3rd paragraph suggested that, if he REALLY liked St John's, he might have ended his recruitment

http://zagsblog.com/articles/robert-carter-could-decide-after-st-johns-visit/#more-116222

I read somewhere that he was asked how the St John's visit went and he replied, "good"
Not exactly a ringing endorsement - when was the last time you heard a recruit say that a visit was lousy, disappointing, etc

“He’s probably going to take two more visits,” Jordan said before he mentioned that St. John’s could end up being the only one.

Precisely. Could and probably. I don't understand the issue. SJU is in a bad spot because they are the only visit he has taken and he has not said yes yet because he may take other visits? Really?
