Transfers

Note Carter reference.

Sophomore Charles Mitchell has been released from his scholarship and will transfer from Maryland, multiple sources told InsideMDSports.com.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-7, 260-pound forward, averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game last season. He'd been considering leaving since the latter stages of Maryland's season, and solidified his decision -- with agreement from Maryland's staff -- within the past month, per sources close to Mitchell.
Mitchell is the fifth player to leave Maryland this off-season, following Nick Faust, Roddy Peters, Seth Allen and Shaquille Cleare. His departure leaves the Terps with three open scholarships; they continue to pursue transfers Richaud Pack, Robert Carter, Terry Henderson and Andrew White.

Wonder whatever happened to our interest in Faust.

All I want is a shooter. Is that so hard?

Antoine Mason;
@NYPost_Brazille: In addition to MAAC schools, St. John's, Hofstra, St. Bonaventure, Buffalo expected to be on list of schools Niagara will block, per source.

Having nothing to do with Mason in particular, IMHO if a kid graduates then his remaining eligibility should be his to do with as he chooses. If he has fulfilled his academic commitment and he isn't asking the school for a scholarship, what right should they have to control where he plays?

Tough to root for the NCAA in any of the litigation against it.

He is allowed to pay tuition and join SJU, I wonder if that will be a consideration for him. But it is a disgrace that a graduating student is not given a blanket release outside his own conference.

Huh? Why would that/should that have anything do with your commitment to playing eligibility?

I pledge to boycott any St John's/Niagara games in the future, and I hope others will do so as well.
That would only hurt St. John's unless you are talking about away games at Niagara. Better to root vociferously for SJU and against Niagara to get back at them.

Surprising;

@KevinMcNamara33: PC’s Josh Fortune to transferhttp://t.co/2NfcqidSao via @projo

Extremely surprising..I liked that kid and noted that I feared him most prior to our BE tourney matchup...Couldn't access the article so don't understand the circumstances

Not trying to spend someone else's money, but I would think that Antoine's dad can afford to write the check, if he so desired

no way he is going to pay $50K+ when he can get it free

"Mason likely will not stay local. Niagara plans to block other MAAC programs, along with St. John’s, Hofstra, Buffalo and St. Bonaventure, which are on its schedule next year, according to a source. The news caught Niagara off guard, the source said, adding Mason said he would be coming back for his final year of eligibility.

“I don’t know what that’s about,” Anthony Mason said of Niagara limiting his son’s options. “I don’t what message you’re sending. He gave four years, he played his [butt] off for them. I don’t think it needs to be done. Once you graduate and get your degree … that’s how people are, that’s how the world is. One minute you mean everything to the person, the next they’re trying to make your life rough. … I think that’s real silly.”

Reading between the lines there sounds like they could be pissed sju is being blocked. I doubt mason cares about buffalo etc.

Very well could be
Or it could merely be a matter of principle
The ironic part of all of this is that the Niagara coach (Casey) was a member of Norm Roberts' staff

Very well could be. I think blocks a kid that graduated is wrong.

I agree - if blocks were to be permitted, it should be limited to schools within the conference
However, I think the rule, in general, that allows a kid to transfer after he graduates, is a dumb rule
There are way too many transfers already - the NCAA should not be encouraging more of them
And, as we know, if a kid is transferring for one year, he only has to attend classes for one semester to be eligible for the season
I would like to know how many of kids who transfer under these circumstances actually receive an advanced degree from the new school
I would bet that it's a very small number - it's merely a ploy to allow a kid to become a free agent for a season - a bad idea IMHO

The rule is not about allowing to transfer. You can transfer anytime you want.

The graduate rule simply allows you to transfer WITHOUT having to sit out a year (the normal penalty you are given for transferring).

Tom I agree and have said he same in the past. The graduate thing is a loop hole being used by kids who sat out a year during their undergrad
