Marillac, are you sitting down? it is happening

@jeffborzello: Niagara guard Antoine Mason will head elsewhere for his final year of eligibility. He averaged 25.6 points last season.

Marillac would have responded sooner, but sometimes his visions into the future leave him with headaches.

@NYPost_Brazille: Niagara transfer Antoine Mason's release won't allow him to attend MAAC school or team on Niagara's sched That includes St John's. #sjubb

That's the biggest BS I've ever heard let's cancel our game with niagara then

Luckily the Niagara president is Father Maher...the same guy who sat on the St. John's bench for years. That release is bogus.

Oh wow, that's just BS. The inter-conference bans, I get. But a ban against one OOC opponent is nuts, especially for a kid who is graduating. It's not like the school didn't get their "money's worth" from him, so to speak.

I don't think they are on our schedule. Even if they were, we could get out of this easily.

All the Maven needs to do is pick up the phone and call Father M if he wants to enroll at SJ.

I don't know it they are on the schedule or not, but they are a "Sister" school like DePaul. Whenever we play theme, we play them for a "cup". The Cup (actually a trophy) goes to the winner who keeps it until the next time the teams meet.

Fwiw, I just spoke with Zach B, who noted Niagara indicated we are on their schedule.

Memo from this Maher to Fr Maher. Free Mason and drop us from your schedule :)

If Mason wants to come to St John's and Niagara refuses to allow him to do so, we should ABSOLUTELY drop Niagara from our schedule
To block a move to a league opponent is one thing, but to block a move to a non-league opponent?
What a load of crap ............ smh

@GoodmanESPN: Houston 6-foot-8 transfer Ahmed Hamdy told ESPN that he plans to visit St. John's in early June. May be eligible to play immediately.

He sat out last season, as a redshirt.

Here is a write-up upon him signing with Houston.

The University of Houston men’s basketball team on Thursday announced the signing of Ahmed Hamdy, a 6-9 post player from Trent Internationale in Sugar Land.

Hamdy, who will be a freshman during the 2013-14 season, averaged a double-double with 18.7 points and 13.6 rebounds as a senior at Trent Internationale. He also averaged 1.3 blocks and 4.0 steals per game.

“He is a tough, interior player and an excellent rebounder,” UH coach James Dickey said. “With his physical gifts, Ahmed will provide depth in our frontcourt.”

Hamdy also has international experience, competing for Egypt at the U-17 World Championships in Germany in 2010, where he averaged a tournament-best 12.1 rebounds.

Found this piece from 2011 TOC event. Ahmed went up against some good players, like Nerlens Noel back then. The full article link is below. Note some familiar names.

"Ahmed Hamdy 6-9 PF (2013) Houston, TX Trent International - Skilled face-up four man can knock down elbow jumper, or drop pass to the post. he has good feet around the hoop, but like most Euro-style players needs to add upper body strength to draw HM interest his skill set will intrigue. He had 23 points and pulled down an impressive 13 boards versus Tilton showing that potential!"

Chris Casey statement on Mason. Not reference to restrictions;

“I don’t know exactly what it is he’s going to look for in terms of the options that his dad mentioned,” Casey said. “I would imagine he may want to challenge himself and try to play at a higher level, that seems to be the pattern of guys that have that one year left when they get to graduate school.”

“My guess is that’s what it will be, so I don’t think it has anything to do with the relationship, I think he may just want to challenge himself and try to go higher.”

As to the restrictions on Mason’s release, Casey said it was up to interim athletic director Steve Butler to decide, but he is away at conference hockey meetings for the remainder of the week.

If this guy Hamdy can play a little small forward also I would take him over Mason. We have enough guards that can play. We just need another guy who can play the 3.

Nonsense. Mason would be huge and is made to play the three in college. He can take it to the hoop, draw contact with the best of them, defend, rebound, shoot a respectable % from deep, and he'd give us three guys that could attack off the bounce in the lineup. He's also a very smart kid and extremely strong at 6'3 210-215.

People look at his stats and think he is a volume scorer, but he did that out of necessity. Scoring almost 26 a game for a terrible team with no other options, he still shot 44% from the field! he was second in the nation in FT attempts. His 3-pt % dipped to 28.6% from 31.5% the prior year, but that was due to taking 5.1 attempts. He won't have to force that many shots and I think he can clean up that % to about 35-36% due to the change in mechanics he has been talking about and less shots. I think he would be a great 12-15 point guy here that can really benefit Jordan and especially Harrison. Most of all, it gets Dom off the floor.
