Transfer Portal

I am thrilled like everyone else about coach Pitino, but we all need to calm down a bit in order to save our sanity. When you go after 4 and 5 star recruits, and highly touted transfers, you will be competing with the best of the best programs, head coaches, and talented staff. And facilities that are like 5 star resorts. While I expect the recruiting to be vastly better than this program has seen since Lavin's first full recruiting cycle, I will not go into a frenzy since there will be players that Pitino will try for, but lose out on. That's the nature of the game. I think the best opportunity for a splash may be right now, as the SJU program is being covered like it hasn't since 1985. Since the hire, Max Kellerman, Stephen Smith and Jim Rome had segments on St. John's. That's only what I happen to catch. I'm sure there is more. Pitino is striking when the pub is at an all time high. He is not wasting a second.

I wish him luck, but portal mania means a kid like him gets ignored until May or later. He may be on a D2 roster next season.

I expect Yaxel to be next. I can’t remember a single JUCO Pitino had off hand and I didn’t see any quickly looking over his Louisville rosters for patterns. The guy might be the most consistent roster builder I’ve ever seen.
I don’t know about that. Yaxel shoots 43% from 3. Pitino loves guys at his size who can shoot it. The only question is if Pitino feels he can do it at this level.

If I allowed SJU basketball to have any impact on my sanity, I would have been institutionalized many years ago.

That's exactly why we got Pitino, to compete vs. the very best programs, and he doesn't give 2 blanks if it's uk, ku, mich st, or whoever.
Rick has the big boy gloves on, lets do this.

Listen, I obvious don't like Rick Pitino. So I am going into disappointed in the choice. But, man oh man, sometimes I'll never understand this board. The attitude seems to be the 'only thing' St. John's can to avoid a trip relegation to the NEC is hire Pitino. Also, good news that comes with a free trip to the Final Four. The blind assumption that we are going to get Pitino the maestro, ala that '95 Kentucky team that dominated the NCAA tournament more than anyone I can remember, without getting the 2010 who recruits with prostitutes and big bags of money (who needs facilities right?) seems foolhardy to me.

So why am I worried? I worry that he's going to fall back into his old habits, get the NCAA on our case and walk away. I don't want see us be forced to watch four scholarship player take on the Big East like in 2003. Rick is telfon, if he wins at St. John's great he gets a little redemption arc at the end of his career. If we loses or worse, gets investigated by the NCAA, he retires and rides off into the sunset. Where does that leave us? I assume with two job vacancies that no one wants, AD and head coach at St. Johns. But hell, I'd rather be happy than right. So if/when he is hired I'm going to cheer for the team and hope Rick can win clear (or at least hid it well).
Be happy that it happened, not sad that it was vacated

The sad fact of the game now is that it makes no sense to develop a guy like Stanley if you want to win now. Just get a better transfer.
It takes big guys longer to get used to the big east. I think O'mar can have a very similar career as Joel Soriano. I think someone is going to benefit greatly from having O'mar for his junior and senior year. Good luck O'mar!
