Transfer Portal

Man people overrate what they have, which has been shown in many experiments. Case in point, here. There isn't one guy we had that left aside from maybe Storr who was an above average P5 starter.
Yup. Also, has anyone noticed the schools the players who left St. John's have committed to. I am not knocking them. I enjoyed watching them, and I will always root for them. But sometimes you need to step back and be objective.

We will be better this year than last. I guarantee you that.
All Jack is really saying is that he thinks we still need better 'talent' to 'walk through that door' as Pitino once adequately put in Boston lol... pretty fair assertion.

Pitino can still take a less talented further than every other coach... but can only go so far with them vs the quality of players/coaches in the BE

It’s premature worrying.

Yet Cruz was rated higher coming out if high school.
Is Olivari a higher level because of his Rice numbers?
Who's to say he can replicate those numbers at Xavier?
New league, New team, New coach, and higher level of competition can affect different players different ways.
We still have players to add.
Who cares who was higher rated they are like 4 years apart from one another. Not even close to being in the same class.

Olivari averaged 18 this past season, he has 4 full years of college basketball under his belt. Good shooter. Dropped 28 on Texas this past season.

Cruz will hopefully be a nice piece for our future but let’s not kid ourselves. In their NCAA tournament game he logged 8 minutes and scored 1 point. He averaged 6ppg/1rpg/1apg.

This is not someone we should be expecting to come in and play serious minutes for a big East team.

Yes we have players to add and im excited about that. But see a lot celebrating/patting ourselves on the back going on on twitter and I don’t feel like we’ve added a real next level game changer yet. All I’m saying.

But I agree with mean Gene def gotta wait and see how it all plays out

I’m not sure who said that it would be tough to beat Lavin’s first recruiting class as the best in school history. That class wasn’t even close to the best in school history. It had quantity but was mostly three and four star guys as I recall. A good class, not great.

I would say that Looie’s last big class - Sealy, Werdann, Buchanan, Sproiling - was better than that class, and Mahoney’s Felipe/Zendon/Turner class was by far the best in school history. Two top 10 players, one of whom was the consensus top recruit in the country.

There’s some really good coaches in the Big East man. I rock with pitino but it’s a lot to ask of the guy to come in with a roster inferior to most of the league year one and make the tournament immediately.
Okay, but we have no clue yet IF the roster will be "inferior to most of the league".
It may well be given the late start, and also agree that the BEC is stacked with top notch coaches, so you may prove to be right but just too early to tell at this point in my view...particularly with Rick fully engaged in the recruiting / portal hunt.

Mahoney's class is the best IMO. And the most disappointing too. For performance the Sealy class is the best.

It’s preposterous to be worried about this team/program right now
Posh, Storr, Wusu, Gardner, King for sure. I'm not "worried". I said wondering. Big difference.

Loved them when they were here but also frustrated the hell out of me for their blunders ,, poor shooting, poor defense!
Who came out to cover 3 point shooters? Nobody
Who consistently made outside shots? Nobody
Who constantly missed chip shots under the basket?
Who consistently made reckless drives to the basket?

I just used Cruz as an example of how kids can progress differently out of high school depending on where they land.
Cruz had to play behind Walter Clayton and Daniss Jenkins. He has room to grow on the bench.

As for Olivari, you're impressed with his scoring average.
He was the Rice offense! He got that average by taking 15-20 shots per game.
Wusu was more efficient and had higher percentages.
Did we lose a higher level player because of the numbers?
I don't think so.

If everyone made it to campus that class would have had 5 of the consensus top 75 recruits in the country, all 4 star as I recall, and Phil Green and God's Gift (and Nuri unfortunately). Four of them played in the NBA with varying degress of success. Of course they didn't all make it to campus that first year but I think the comment was taking into account the original class before Jakarr, Norvel and Amir were declared ineligible. Taking that into account and using the same assumption I agree that the Felipe class was better if smaller, the Malik class might be equal though I think rankings wise Lavs class wins that one. Please note that the average class only has 20-25 5 star guys, so 4 star ain't noting to sneeze at.
