Transfer Portal

Not sure if this was posted but Vitale gives his opinion on the portal https://www.si.com/college/2023/04/...=facebook&utm_medium=news_tab&mibextid=unz460
It’s a weak argument if look at the sweet 16 this year and tell me only major programs can be successful.

if he said something like ‘I don’t like the transfer portal because it makes college sports look too much like professional sports’ than I could see an argument. But to suggest that ‘non blue bloods schools can’t compete’, you’re better than that Dickie V and I think Princeton, SDST, FAU, Creighton, Xavier, Gonzaga, and Houston would like a world with you.

i agree with you but it does have an impact on teams in one bid leagues that that may find a couple of diamonds in the rough and can lose them immediately often to a higher rated mid major. This was already an issue for them with the sit out year but now it is extremely challenging.

This whole NIL and portal situation all (partially) resulted out of the pandemic. I’m not saying NIL really had anything to with that but the liberal use of the portal certainly did so any real effects you’re gonna see from that really haven’t occurred just yet I would think.

Andrew, that is a much better argument. The days of low major coaches having a good run and taking their team with them certainly are here to stay. And I doubt we will ever see the Butler 2010/2011 magic with Brad stevens that kept most of the team together through the 2 year run again (I think Haywood went pro?).

That’s a good point too, we still have people working those ‘bonus years’.

Still this is basketball. It’s not like college football when the disparity between the haves and have nots are insurmountable. The Akron Zip will never beat Alabama.

Can UMBC beat UVA? Not often but it’s in the realm of possibility and no amount of transferring is going to change that. Will mid-majors lose more transfers to big names after a good year, sure. But now there will be more talented freshman left in the pool for those mid majors to snatch up.

I personally think it’s going to be harder for teams like Duke/UNC/Kentucky who have been used to impressing players with their perks/facilities, both NCAA approved and of questionable legality. They now are going to have to compete with any school who has a deep pocketed booster who really wants to win.

Happy that we can field a team, sure. Questioning if this team (except Joel) can compete in the big east, also sure.
I agree with questioning the potential of any team before they take the floor but if the only reason for your position is because of where they transferred from, IMO, it is a weak argument. Just too much evidence to the contrary, from the successes in the tournament of mid major teams, to players from mid majors making impacts upon transferring.
Again, Pitino has a proven track record over quite a long time of recognizing and developing talent into really good teams. FDU made noise in the tournament with several players from D2; the fact is there are just a ton of good players throughout college basketball, the trick coming in so late in the year is finding them. Pitino has a sure fire read on both Jenkins and Davis so why not trust his proven judgement until proven otherwise? He didn’t come here to fail or embarrass himself. That doesn’t ensure success by any means but it just makes sense to me to wait to see the product that is put on the court.
